Making a captured image visible when attached to a posting.

#1 Post by bigpup »

After using MtPaint-snapshot screen capture to make an image. What next?
what must you do to make the image you capture, compatible, so that it will show in the Puppy forum post?

1. try to keep file size to 50Kb or smaller.
Changes you make in MtPaint will effect size of file.
(this is a be nice to forum and not eat up storage space)

2. The forum doesn't show images wider than 600 because some members might have small screens.

How to size image in MtPaint:
Under Image settings you use two options.

1.Crop-
crop the image to remove everything not having to do with your topic.
Hold the left mouse button down and drag to outline the area you want to keep.
Go to Image -> Crop
Walla!
That way, when you scale, you aren't unnecessarily reducing the size of the image.

2. scale canvas-
Go to image->scale canvas
In the new setting:
Make the width 400 or 500 or 600.
Click in the hight setting and it will self adjust to width setting.
Make sure fix aspect ratio is checked.
Select OK.

If the size of your image file is a lot more than 50Kb, Redo the scale canvas and use smaller settings.

This will give you an image, that when attached to a post, will be visible when reading post.

Making captured image using PupSnap

Need to have the PupSnap version 1.6.1 or newer.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=61361

In setup
In format option box-
Select jpg
check thumbnail
In percentage(%) option box-
select 600px
This will auto size to forum requirements.
You will get a reduced size image with the proper width for the forum.

These info guides will get you an image that will be visible in a post.
They are the basics.
Some tips to tweak your image, are given in other posts to this topic.
Read on if you want other tweaking ideas or want to add info.

Thanks bigpup 8)

What I often do is host my images off the Murga site
to take pressure off the forum servers
The one I use (registered so can provide a direct image)
http://my.imageshack.us/
and then just highlight the link and click on the 'Img' forum button
when posting 8)

Not sure what you are trying to say here.
This works with .png images also.
Again, try to keep them no more than 50Kb in size.

If the size of your image file is a lot more than 50Kb, Redo the scale canvas and use smaller settings.
Perhaps aarf is saying that although .png is a good file format,it's weightier in kb's than a .jpg. To retain a larger image without rescaling, simply adjust the jpeg's quality: 75% is more than adequate for simply posting an image.

Fossil,

Good point about quality setting.

Can you provide how to do this in MtPaint?

Remember you are limited to a 600 width setting. If image is wider than 600, it will not be seen in post. Do not think quality setting would have an effect on width.

Hi bigpup,
Here's a save image which might clarify the results.
Just, 'File, Save-As',
Select .jpg on the left hand drop-down menu. Then go across to the right-hand side, select the quality control.

True.

I save to jpeg format almost always. It isn't configured to save the settings. I've been through the documentation and didn't see how to do it.

Write the developer and request a feature?

http://mtpaint.sourceforge.net/

I expect the source code for such a program is very comprehensive. But possibly a little tweak could make jpeg the default.

Ok.
This is when using MtPaint. How to change quality of image in jpg format.
Thanks for the info. :D

Quality of image has not been much of an issue.
(would be a help with a full screen image)
The big issues:
600px width limit
Something around 50Kb image file size
( this is a be nice to forum and not eat up storage space)

jpg is best for flowers, puppies, photographs.....
png is best for screenshots of GUI and text. File size can be decreased by converting to indexed that is less colors.

Thanks, your thread has shown me howto produce high quality low file sized screenshots of GUIs using just mtpaint. (no more gimp) :)
