Extra Application Repository for Legacy OS 2

#1 Post by john biles »

Hello Everyone,
With the Release of Legacy OS 2 from time to time I will make extra Applications available. In time this small Repository should grow bigger as more Applications are added.

Latest Packages :

Wesnoth
Briss
Opera 12 Final QT4
Aleph One Trilogy
Prboom
Kchecker, kpacman, Ksudoku package

Note: All Legacy OS users should be installing these packages to compliment the versions already installed.

Opera 12 Final give you better support for HTML5 over Opera 10.
In use I have noticed Opera 10 struggle while loading and on occasions crashing as Websites are changed and updated to take advantage of the ever changing advances on the Web.

Those using Java on line: Opera 10 has Java support, Opera 12 does not, it's a long story!

I have to thank the "Opera Development Team" for suppling a Web Browser still compatible with the legacy system files Legacy OS relies on, because without this compatibility Legacy OS users wouldn't have a very usable web browser for what today's Web expects. (Seamonkey, Firefox, Google Chrome and others are no longer compatible with Legacy OS.)

Applications currently in Repository:

Office
Open Office 3.1
Adobe Reader 9.3 (With Opera Browser plugin support)

Seriously, John - very happy to see this up - I've been thrilled (and occasionally stunned) by TEENpup2010minibeta, running frugal-boot on my Toshiba Portege 3480CT (P3 coppermine, 600MHz, 196MB RAM), and look forward to running this one along side it and on a newer lappie (T60 Lenovo).
Always a Big Fan of John van Gaans' :)

[EDIT: Sorry JB/JvG - have PM'd a few hours ago but message is currently stuck in my "Outbox". Sorry for the delay.]

UPDATE Tuesday 7th June:
Apologies for posting here, John - I only really watch the "Puppy Derivatives" and "Puppy Projects" threads - missed your announcement thread here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 877#529877

Repository now has 41 games and growing!

If only you were a Legacy OS 2 user, you too could enjoy this ever growing Repository and NO! these Applications won't be made available for Puppy and/or other Derivatives.

Feel free to experiment with them but just remember you'll have to find all the missing Dependencies yourself. I am annoying you! LOL!

Stop me annoying you by becomes a Legacy OS 2 user end enjoy all the extra Applications slowly filling the Repository!

Note: Applications are only chosen if they have any chance of running on the legacy hardware Legacy OS 2 is targeted at.

OK, Now here's the question?

Is anyone enjoying these extra packages?

Are you having any problems with them?

What have you installed?

Is this all pointless as nobody really cares or is using Legacy OS 2! LOL!

I use Legacy OS2 most days and am more than impressed with it; it's very well featured, visually attractive, bug free as far as I can tell and runs well on my old machine.

I have a suggestion to make though. I think that whilst KPDF is very good and well featured (it's a worthy alternative to Adobe Reader 9, IMO), it's often slow to load pages and can take a couple of seconds on my machine to transform a new page from a blur to a clear page of print.

Would it be worthwhile adding a lighter PDF viewer as well, such as, for example, EPDF or apvlv (Alf's PDF viewer, which is used on AntiX)? Neither would take up much extra space.

Hello Colonel Panic,
IN ROX File Manager have you tried this? Right mouse click on a pdf file and you see the option to quickly open it. I've included xpdf for this purpose and been a bit naughty and not included it in the menu.

No I haven't, but thanks. I'll try it.

Bad news I'm afraid; I installed Open Office 3.1 from the application repository but none of the applications worked when I clicked on them.

It's not a big deal since abiword and gnumeric do pretty much all I need from an office suite (along with Portabase, Who Do's compact and yet excellent database program which I believe should be mentioned more often than it is here), but it would be nice to get it working.

I've also got the Icebreaker game working in Legacy OS; I simply copied the files over from Absolute. I don't know how it would compile from scratch in Legacy but it might be worth a look.

Best,

Hello Colonel Panic,
I will download the tar.gz of Open Office 3.1 and confirm it's not corrupt. Open Office once installed to / with a menu reload should work as expected.
Will provide a replacement if needed. This is the same version that was default in TEENpup 2009 Legacy and is working fine on my computers. :?:

P.S Thanks for the feedback!

Hello Colonel Panic,
Downloaded Open Office.tar.gz and size and md5sum's match my original tar.gz.
Booted up Legacy OS 2 live and copied tar.gz to /root
Clicked on tar.gz and waited for Xarchive to open file.
Extracted open file to /
Reloaded menu: Applications > Accessories > Misc > Reload Menu
Under Office > Office in menu I now see Open Office and select Writer (OpenOffice3)
Open Office starts

I can confirm there's nothing wrong with the package?

OK, I'm satisfied in that case that the package is fine. I'll start again with a fresh pup_save file and give it another go.

Legacy OS 2 gives you full access to Adobe Reader 9.3 after installing it from the Repository. Here's Adobe Reader running inside Opera.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Open Office still doesn't work in Legacy on my machine (though oddly it does work in Puppy Turbo Extreme and probably in other 420/421 Puppies too).

It's not a big deal for me though, because Abiword, Gnumeric and PortaBase do everything I need in an office distro.
