OK, here's what I got so far:

I have updated the following:

connectionwizard <-- 18n'ed, more features
connectionwizard_2nd <-- 18n'ed, more features
net-setup.sh <-- fixed GUI
pppoe-connect <-- updated, fixes
pppoe-setup <-- updated, fixes

I also updated the relevant .mo files

I cleaned up the look of the the network managers, and added both the old Pwireless and Frisbee to connectwizard_2nd

I used some LupQ and Quicket Wary scripts as a base, to add 18n support..
And I'll look into eduroam...

Had a thought about the PPM ...

Now that Puplite is very nicely compatible with Wary, and shares many Wary libs and utils...

.. could I add the Wary 5 repo to the Puppy 4 package manager?

I don't see why not.. Not sure exactly what would be required...

1. I would need to add the repo URL, with a checkbox to select it
2. I would need to scan the repo for pet files
3. I would need to get the (new format) pet specs from the pet files
4. I would need to output the pet specs info as needed
5. I would need to re-use/copy the code that lists the pets
6. I would need to handle the listed pets as usual
7. Errrm.. Anything else??

- Steps 3 and 4 would require some code stolen from Wary - no prob there
- All other steps just need code already in the pup4 PPM to be re-used

About breed names, if I do go with one, I was thinking Akita - the loyal old friend!

And sorry not to address this earllier:
Puppyt wrote:What I would love to see is a dialogue to run EduRoam connections. My uni, and most of the bigger universities worldwide are using that system (http://www.eduroam.org/). At present the wpa_supplicant (which one?) has to be manually edited in Puppy http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 302#455302, but if there was a nooby-proof app to simplify secure connection to EduRoam I think Puppy would prick up more ears in the wider computing community. I know you have too much on your plate, sc0ttman - so how should I plead my case to the WiFi gurus in the Puppy Community?

Keep up the Good Work :)
I would post a thread somewhere in the forum, maybe in PET requests, for someone to create a simple GUI for EduRoam, that could easily integrated into the "Internet Connection Wizard"

Maybe emphasise it can be very useful for a large number of students, all over the world!
That seems reason enough to support it, in Linux at least.

I have not been to Uni, so I asked a few mates about EduRoam, and I know their Unis use it, I checked, but they had never heard of it  So I'll do my learnings and see what I can come up with..

I'll have a good look at that post, and go from there.

How about...

http://wiki.hiit.fi/display/it/eduroam+for+Linux+users

I think tunneled TLS for security may be a problem....

Image

....as I don't recall seeing that before - maybe a different version of Network Manager...?

Note: if you get this far;
After this you may be asked to allow Network Manager to access your keyring. You need to allow this practice if you wish to connect to eduroam. Unfortunately Network Manager isn't able to ask for a password when connecting to eduroam and thus your password needs to be stored to Gnome Keyring. Fortunately keyring's security is good.
So Gnome may be needed for keyring, too...?

Many Thanks to you both, sc0ttman and Aitch - in your response to my earlier bleating about EduRoam. I certainly didn't mean to hijack your thread OR divert your attention away from your core project, sc0ttman (BTW the Network Connection dialogues look fab- can't wait to try it and all your other updates in your Puplite6, alpha 6+ AKITA - great name choice). "Real world" issues last week intervened with my investigations in the Puppiverse - still I dunno what happened to my notifications to updates on this thread.
Aitch - thanks for your legwork on the EduRoam issue - hadn't seen that site at all, hope to follow through with your suggestions (both of you) later today... and now "keyring" dependencies...
Cheers!

ubuntu light fonts

#48 Post by sc0ttman »

Been playing with the JWM theme and Ubuntu fonts... I like the new fonts...
Especially the "Ubuntu Light" font, which I have added to GTK, JWM, also Firefox, etc..

But I have a problem - if I install the other Ubuntu fonts, the 'Light' font is ignored in JWM and replaced by one of the other Ubuntu fonts, depending on which others are installed.

I actually don't mind leaving out the other Ubuntu fonts too much, as each font is around 400kb!
I just hope it all works OK!

Here is what I have in all my JWM config files..
This is what works when I have only the 'Ubuntu Light' font installed (no other Ubuntu fonts)..

Code: Select all

<Font>Ubuntu-L 12</Font>

Using anything else does not show the "Ubuntu Light" font, filename 'Ubuntu-L.ttf"
..which is what I want.

Anyway, here are some screenshots, pf the 'Ubuntu Light' font in action:
Thoughts are welcome.

Uploading an alpha now.. my alpha 7...

Only tested on my home PC at the moment and 2 others at a local college..

This one is quite slick, I reckon, looks 'fresh' for a Puppy 4..
Boots straight to desktop on my PC, and the college PCs..
But not in vbox... which actually is good, cos you can choose Xvesa, isntead of Xorg :)

Still loads of things to address...

- usability, use the first boot BaCon help guide thing
- make the devx updated and fixed (still compiles with a normal 420 devx)
- add a few pfix options
- clean up the menu
- add a few small apps that are still missing
- write a quickpet and openGL installer thing
- make shinobars sfs_load 1.1 work right (still using goingnuts version, which I like)
- ROX desktop disabled by default (for now), but easy to switch
- improve hardware support (probably well beyond me)

But I think I have improved the following:
- updated to: bash 4.2, busybox 1.18.4, jwm-500, xz
- updated to a Wary 512 "core" - same Glibc, X11, GDK, GTK, ffmpeg, etc
- pfix=usbsave.. disables real time saving to savefile in pupmode 12
- great codec support (x264, webm, etc)
- still uses vlc (1.1.5, no gui version) plus VLC-GTK
- themes, icons, mime types and looks
- cleanup of all useless files (I reckon)
- skips input device dialog, unless choosing serial port
- improved wallpaper setting (still a weak point)
- improved switching between ROX and "JWM only" desktops
- updated a few apps (startups, macchanger-gui, network wizard)
- updated loads of apps: PupApps, PupControl, Woofy, Geany, gFTP, pmusic, pburn, etc
- added BaCon and NicoEdit, plus PupTray as example
- added deadbeef
- added termit, a VTE terminal, used in Geany
- other stuff

Link to follow soon if anyone wants to test it ..
ISO size is about 85mb...

Manual frugal install to an Armada M700 P3 450 with 320mb ram.
Xorg at 1024 x 768
TP link WN321G wireless USB adapter (WPA-PSK). Connected with standard Network-Wizard
All working well - browsing with OperaQT static. (Elinks wouldn't let me log in)

Just about to save and reboot. If the cat explodes I'll let you know....

Hi sc0ttman,
regarding setting of wallpaper.
If you are not using puppy pin you could use Feh image viewer for setting the background.

This is what i have in .xinitrc on lucid puppy 256 frugal install.

disables the puppy pin and makes the feh wallpaper persistent on reboot.

Code: Select all

#rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin
rox --pinboard=
sh ~/.fehbg &
EDIT:
If you need a wallpaper setter i have a version of SimpleWALL http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=69512 that uses Feh to set the background instead of Rox.

cheers.

EDIT: Forgot to day, thanks for the Feh tip, gonna test it soon...

Hey Stu, thanks for the suggestion. I have a script that works reliably, even after reboot, as I have setup both JWM and ROX to only look for /usr/share/backgrounds/default.jpg, which is always a symlink to an image file.

My solution must work for both ROX and JWM setup.. And I also noticed that with later versions of JWM, you must remove the wallpaper settings from JWM config files, if running the ROX pinboard, or you can't see the icons...

But I've added Yad to puplite, and have been playing with a few GUIs, yours included, and was thinking that all your Simple*** GUIs, combined into a tabbed interface would be GREAT

...But the problem in Puplite is that the GUI for selecting the wallpapers is lacking, as I have not got around to letting users choose between "stretched", "centered" and "tiled", which I plan to do...

Also, I noticed JWM is a bit crap at showing a wallpaper image that is larger than the screen resolution - ROX manages OK, but it looks ugly in JWM, so I think, if the "JWM only" desktop is detected, I need to scale the image to match the resolution, then move or copy the scaled image to /usr/share/backgrounds/default.jpg

The cat's still in one piece...

Notes after a reboot.
Network connection needs initialising again. This is not uncommon so no biggee for me.
VLC-GTK won't stop playing a track, even after exit.
Retrovol wouldn't load at first until I changed the permissions. It keeps defaulting to 'mute' though. Have to open up the full window and check the PCM box as well as Main, or no sound. This is not retained after a reboot.
Installed Firedog as main browser now, and doing ok.

pmnet - I've tried this before on pupngo and 412. Does it actually do anything? Sits in the tray from first boot regardless of whether there's a connection and doesn't even give me a cursory blink. I want my money back!!

Hi Sc0ttman,
To be honest i haven't used JWM for quite a while now - but an idea for scaling the background for JWM - Vovchik made a nice little command line utility called picscale, you could use it with xwininfo to get screen res and scale to it.
Picscale download:http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... h&id=42741

Code: Select all

WIDTH=`xwininfo -root |grep Width|cut -d: -f2`
HEIGHT=`xwininfo -root |grep Height|cut -d: -f2`

picscale -i /path/to/full-res-img.jpg -o /path/to/resized-img.jpg $WIDTH $HEIGHT 85

That's exactly what I was gonna use, I saw it was posted as a lighter alternative to imageMagic.. Great minds think alike.. :D

.. although now that I think about it, the icon_switcher tool (which I looked at when doing Woofy) already resizes and even converts icons when changing themes... Maybe I could have another look at that script ...

You don't get auto connect? Is it ethernet or wireless?
..maybe try Frisbee, see if thats better.. ???
VLC-GTK won't stop playing a track, even after exit.
Retrovol wouldn't load at first until I changed the permissions.
VLC-GTK has a stop playback button, which usually works fine.. I am planning update VLC-GTK, to better support audio though..

EDIT: I forgot to update something in VLC-GTK in the alpha,
you're right, but I got it fixed now

Changed Retrovols permissions? Was it non-exec? Can't have been..
Can you expand?
Did you try ALSA mixer or the ALSA config thing?
It keeps defaulting to 'mute' though. Have to open up the full window and check the PCM box as well as Main, or no sound. This is not retained after a reboot.
PCM is indeed always required, as well as master... Not sure why it wouldn't stick..

Can you give the sound card you're using, clearly puppy 4 dont like it,
but we might be able to do something there..
pmnet - I've tried this before on pupngo and 412. Does it actually do anything? Sits in the tray from first boot regardless of whether there's a connection and doesn't even give me a cursory blink. I want my money back!!
Hmm... Yes, it would be there regardless of connection or not, but works fine for me, blinks at me and everythin!

But yes, I am planning to replace the tray tools pmnet and pmfree anyway, with either the latest work from goingnuts, or some other light lil thing.. freememapplet is a bit heavy IMHO..

BIG thanks for testing, all info helps me get where I wanna go

I'm going to start again with pfix=ram at some point to make sure I know what steps I'm taking.
Briefly though, the stop button in VLC-GTK didn't work, and music continued even after exiting (looking in htop, there were multiple instances of vlc-gtk, 5 I think, is this expected? ).
Using a wireless connection (see my first post). I can connect fine using the 'standard' network wizard, but have to load the profile again each boot. Frisbee wouldn't connect to my network for some reason, or Pwireless2, but I need to try from scratch to make sure.
Anyway, this is a vey promising piece of work, and I'm glad to be of help. Using a decent font really makes a difference to the look and feel.
Oh - just remembered. Refreshing the desktop always takes 30 seconds, regardless of if any apps are running or not. Never had that happen before.

speaking of vlcgtk, the GUI used to control it could be adapted for mupdf (a much lighter weight pdf viewer)
Check out my github repositories. I may eventually get around to updating my blogspot.
