More fun :) [ checksum verified by Lobster :wink: ]

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

CHANGES from 311.37

* most noticeable is NO boot to desktop
* a UNIQUE hostname is assigned and is persistent.. (Please verify if you do a FULL install) ..thanks to gcmartin
* Pmusic is updated to the third alpha, along with Pequalizer, needing the latest gtkdialog revision (Sigmund, forgive me for hacks![you'll see!])
* Nathan's wall setter is updated
* Clarf's Pnethood is updated, thanks Clarf :) [seems faster to me]
* Sound has a new approach, it should be better for all
* Added an app to GetFlash (Thx smokey01, oh, and libreoffice should be fixed and updated :wink: )
* New tray icon theming, love it or hate it!
* Parcellite updated
* Rox Filer NTFS bug FIXED!
* Firewallstate ADDED [tasmod :) ]
* radeon modeset=0 is now default [thx mikesLr, davids45, Lobster, Billtoo and others]
* USB booting should be ok, if it fails with PUI try BootFlash, I had an instance of a non-booting FAT32 stick from PUI, ok with BootFlash, ok from PUI when formatted to EXT2
* New mount desk icons (woof)
* other small stuff

devx <-- http://brainwavedesigncentral.net/micko ... 312.37.sfs 123MB

Checksum; 304aba8235a363329caad1a81dd860c0 devx_spup_312.37.sfs

Notes

Kernel

The kernel is recompiled 2.6.37.6, seems the best one to me for this pup, and that has nothing to do with Slackware's choice. I tried 2.6.39.2, too many modules failed to compile, maybe that's fixed in 2.9.29.3, I don't know.. I may experiment with that later as the "PAE" version.
USB booting can be problematic with these newer kernels as well pemasu (the cold puppy series maestro) knows. If you can't boot try instead of "pmedia=usbflash" using "pmedia=sdb1" (or if you have more drives/partitions bump the letter from 'b' to 'c' or 'd' or whatever suits your system). Barry is looking into this issue. See the blog if interested.

Packages

STILL need to sync PPM... soon

Slickpet has more sfs files now and a surprise on the first page, Frisbee, seems to work fine for me. I too have experienced intermittent non connectivity at boot, a PITA, especially when SNS doesn't save settings.

PPM now introduces the Smokey01 repo as well as the brainwave repo (thanks to Smokey01 and Saturn [aka Xrter in IRC] respectively). I did have many problems yesterday uploading heaps of stuff, some files from brainwave were returning the wrong checksum, so please let me know ASAP if you get a dodgy download, especially the main iso and devx.

Sound

SOUND should be fixed now :P

There is an exciting new feature that zigbert and myself have been developing, some of you already know. I won't announce it.. that takes the fun out of discovery! Sure it may break sound for some of you, but most it will be fixed easily by running alsamixer or right clicking the retrovol icon in the tray and choosing "full window" and adjusting the sliders and checkboxes.
For those of you that can't bear this new feature then it can be uninstalled. I'll let you know how later.

Apps

There are heaps of upgrades in the apps, not done yet though. Some apps have been removed but there are others that cover for those. I'll do up a full changelog later. Some that you will notice are gnumeric, Pmusic, ffmpeg.

X.org

Sorry, no more boot to desktop! This is a minor inconvenience I believe and may well be worth the hassle for stability.

~~~~~~
Thanks to pemasu, zigbert, Iguleder and ttuuxxx for apps, futwerk for artwork.
Anyway, enough drivel.. get Slacko!
Latest changelog and TODO list
Kernel source <-- http://brainwavedesigncentral.net/micko ... _spup2.sfs Approx 85M
Checksum; 1d29a36c731a19ce30333e0aa5e68349 kernel_sources-2.6.37.6-patched_spup2.sfs
Update to PPM, somehow the wrong file slipped through :oops:
after install type
Code: Select all
rm /tmp/pet*
in a terminal emulator, saves reboot to flush /tmp of petget files.
EDIT2: woops.. forgot smokey's repo in petget :lol: :oops: .. get the second update, includes the first
I haven't got quite all needed packages to smokey's repo yet so some will fail.
EDIT3: up to petget update 3, added seamonkey-2.2 and broadcom_wl driver.
Also did a manual frugal install on the old P3 test box, everything worked out of the box.......... except the sound was muted. Easy fix and is persistent.
Looking good.
Back from an install in a few.
:mrgreen:
. . . that is me jealous . . .
Download good. Fast.
OK my 64bit Athlon BSOD (Black Screen of Death)
. . . gonna go through old stuff for spup, I thought it was 'puppy acpi=off'
(something like that - I did type it in right but that command made no difference)
Tried on a second machine went to desktop no problems, but could not get a wireless connect - scan found nothing. That could be my issue so nothing to worry about there unless others have issues . . .
Thanks guys and do not tell us anything about the new Quickpet
feature . . . I want to have a look for myself 8)
Thanks Mick. Thanks guys. :)
Hi James
As a bit of an aside, can you try pwidgets on the quad? Make sure you get the PPM update first as it has the latest pwidgets. Older pwidgets are not compatible with the new wallpaper setter, that is they will clobber it! I want to see if the 4 cores show in the cpu_bar widget, should support up to eight methinks.. erm any more and it would take up the whole side! :lol:
Give me a minute and I certainly will. Might come in handy when I build my hexacore. :lol:
Got PPM update.
PPM will not download Pwidgets from either repo.But while I was typing this Slickpet grabbed it.
:) plugged in an Ethernet cable.
Got connected
xchat OK
Most programs seemed there and OK :)
Tried sound - went through the first two suggestions (from the sound set up wizard)
- without getting sound.
Good little wizard - much potential . . .
The CPU usage has now gone very high and the screen seems to have locked up
- ctrl + alt + backspace did not activate - so a solid freeze . . .
(I will be blaming bugman as per usual) :wink:
I hope the controversial slickpet feature is developed further.
I say controversial because some will not appreciate the necessity
for Puppy to be connected.
Check for yourself.
Just a small point on the slickpet menu - last one about sfs-experimental
(not sfs-experimantal (that spelling is in the latest Lucid too)
tips on spelling from moi? Oh well . . .
Feedback
#17 Post by peebee »
Hi Mick
Some feedback for you....from my HP550 laptop
- sound was muted at first until I enabled Master and PCM in retrovol full screen
- FlSynclient doesn't work for me - see screenie - so I haven't got a scroll wheel and my touchpad is too sensitive to random finger movements
- I think I may still have wifi persistence problems and not being maintained thru reboot using SNS but need to do more experimenting
- Samba via Pnethood worked great and nice and quick
Cheers
Peter
Hi peebee
Good to see the broadcom connected ok, and pnethood works too.
Try running xorgwizard to see if that cures synaptics woes. I have a compaq a little older (2008) and synaptics is ok.
HTH
First impressions. Md5sum ok.
http://repository.slacky.eu/ seems to be down. Updating databases failed when trying to connect to it.
Messing with .packagges files caused that PPM does not even start now. It is my success, not the problem with spup.
Boots to the desktop. Finds drivers when I noticed to add z...driver sfs, lol. Intel graphics driver configured and found. Great.
SNS works. Ath9k driver loaded automatically and connects with SNS ok.
Synaptics to work seems to need full xorg.conf.
Flsynclient configures but .flSynclient seems to be overwritten with default with every X restart.
Now first essential missing peace. No any kind gui hash checking application. Libmhash was missing also. I copied it from lucid puppy and installed gtkhash and rox right clicks.
Rox right clicks is nice additional pet which could be included. Don570 has done good work with it. It is small pet anyway.
Alsa detection and Pmusic 1.92. I have demanding hw so probably just my problem. Asoundstate not created at bootup. It looks like 10alsa script goes awol with my hw. Normal situation for me. I used my alsafix script and asoundstate created. Now pupradio plays finnish rock station just fine. Pmusic 1.92 seems to load now database without clickable choices. Loads stations ok, starts to play station but no sound. I remember I had this problem also with Pmusic version prior 1.83, 1.83 fixed the sound problem.
But as I have told, I have demanding hw.
I include my alsafix script which is just a way to have asoundstat file created, nothing fancy. I have it at /etc/init.d in my puppies.
Remove the phony .gz. It fools this great forum upload mechanism
Code: Select all
# alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such device
That is probably the reason to my problem. I seem not to get devices created as they should be. I will test soon with savefile when I have my alsafix loaded at bootup.
To be continued..........
