Changing video drivers sometimes can be a problem because it is such a vital component of the system.
What driver were you using before changing?
In Quickpet->drivers tab->Click here to test your graphics card
What driver does it recommend?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

That's curious,...as I have that very same nvidia card (and use the 96.43.16 driver as well.). I'm using Macup 525 (which is the same, I believe,..as Puppy 525). The driver from the forums worked,...as well as the one from Quickpet (for another install I did on another computer,..that has the exact same nvidia card ...geforce4 mx 440 agp8x).

Are you sure you are getting also, the driver that matches your kernel?
Also, some drivers say to use Probe and others say to use Choose.
So that depends on the driver you downloaded.
If I remember correctly, picking Choose disables the included nvidia drivers so that the one you installed is used.

Changing video drivers is a black art sometimes.

Uninstall the downloads of Nvidia driver
Reboot computer
Start over with Quickpet.

If still no luck,

Try following these directions.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=58810

In a frugal install free space in the save file is critical.
Need at least 200MB.
Frugal install make sure you make a save file before changing video driver.
Sometimes for some reason Xorgwizard will not switch drivers.
Sometimes rebooting helps.
Sometimes a fresh install of Puppy is needed.
Seems to work best if it is the first thing you do in a fresh install. Change video driver.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

For what its worth, I have that video card too and have had no problems installing the Nvidia driver in Lucid a lot of time (testing).

I found the problem, I had a bad configuration on my bios, in the bios put yes in the option irq to vga, and after the pet of the driver works.

NVidia 520 GT GeoForce GT 520 (Dual Monitor Display)

#10 Post by I-Dont-Know »

After reading these posts on NVidia card install, I'd like to chime in with my questions.

I dual boot my pc with Ubuntu 12.10 with NVidia 520GT as my video card set up for dual monitor.

Puppy Boots off my USB stick.
I think this is referred to a frugal install.
My Lupsave file is on the hard drive.

I did not install the card.

I wimped out and brought it to a local computer repair biz.
NVidia works nicely with with Ubuntu.

Before I go and experiment with trying to figure out how to install the drivers into my 5.25 PuppyLinux O/S, I'd like to ask:

For the sake of learning thru experimentation and refraining from messing up my 5.25 Puppy, would it be better to create a new Puppy 5.25 USB stick, backup my Lupsave file to an external drive then experiment with installing the NVidia drivers into Puppy.

What I want to achieve is the dual monitor setup.

The NVidia card is in the machine right now and Puppy is using it right now.
I have not so far installed any NVidia drivers into Puppy so how Puppy is using the NVidia card, I cannot explain. But it is.

But I am not getting the dual monitors.

I don't want to willy nilly begin installing drivers and thus mess up my O/S.
I don't want to have to start over.....

But having a backed up Lupsave file would give me more confidence to proceed.

How do I begin to know & locate which Nvidia package of drivers to use to install into my 5.25 Puppy O/S ?

And then after downloading the packet, how to I install it ?
Do I use Setup/QuickPet or some other utility in Puppy ?

Admittedly I am a nervous nellie on uncertain ground here.

Many thanks,
