Sorry that is an HL 4040cn I was able to get the pet that you had created for the 4040cdn to show up in the cups manager, but it would not work. I tried downloading the drivers as suggested in the first part of the thread. I could not get the debbi commands to work. I thought I put the files in their correct locations, but they do not show up in the cups manager as a selection. This is the error I keep getting: "Unable to locate printer 'printername'!".
I used to work with unix a long, long time ago and I think linux is fantastic, the learning curve is a bit steep for this old guy though.

Please explain step-by-step what you are doing to install this printer. For example, are you starting in CUPS with "Find New Printers"?

Yes I am using the cups manager, add printer. The brother printer shows up as a discovered network printer. I select the printer, select continue, the printer shows up in the next screen with Name, Description and connection. The Connection is lpd://BRNED2156/BINARY_P1 I click on continue to select the model from the list. There was not 4040 model available originally. I was able to get the hl 4040cdn model to show up in the list with your pet from above, which I then selected. I click on set default options, then go to maintenance, print test page, at which point I receive the error "Unable to locate printer 'BRNED2156'!"
I have also tried deleting the printer and using find new printers in the cups manager to start the whole process, but I get the same results.

Here is the problem: When Puppy installs a printer in CUPS, it needs to know the unit's IP address. Puppy doesn't know what BRNED2156 is.
Check the printer's control panel. There should be a screen that shows the IP address. If you can't find it, report back.
Locate the file /etc/hosts. Open it in a text editor. Add the line
Code: | 192.168.xx.yy BRNED2156 |
Use the printer's IP address. Do a print test.
If that doesn't work, there is another way to install the printer.

Solved : Brother Hl 4040 CN |
|
Thank You John, that resolved the problem. I came across some posts that suggested this might be a problem and I looked at the cups manager to see if I could change the address. Then I got to thinking that if the system found the printer by itself then it should know how to access it. So much for thinking!
I really do appreciate the help.
Blessings,
Mike

Thanks for your extraordinary efforts in making the brother printers work with puppy.
I returned the fujixerox multifunction back (after tons of reading and searching on the internet about setting it in unix!) - I do not know why some manufacturers are so averse to unix!
But, I went and bought a brother mfc-j415w and it installed like a gem on puppy linux! I am surprised at the support brother provides for unix!
Btw, my hpc4340 suddenly got into a hardware trouble (may be i used it too much on the puppy!) - it couldnt recognize print cartridges despite changing them. I had to retire it after 3 yrs of service!!
Anyone wanting a mfc for puppy, I would recomment the Brother mfc-j415w.
Regards

Brother HL2140 Laser Jet Printer |
|
question I asked in Slacko-B3 thread
I have a Brother-Hl2140 laser jet printer which was not recognized in 4.99.5 until I d/l the usb pet provided.
rcrsn51 - I have a question for you. The Brother HL2140 is not shown in list where you browse for printer. I have been using brother-2040 which was recommended printer in other versions of puppy. Should I continue with this or d/l driver for this specific printer?
thanks

If your current driver is working, there is no need to change. But I'm curious where you are finding an HL-2140 PET.

I do not have a HL-2140 PET.
When I open Cups Printer Wizard, these are pages i see
Screens 1 and 2 show Brother HL-2140 - screen 3 does not have entry for Brother HL2140 in the list of printers. Do I simply press enter here without trying to highlight a particular printer?
Reason I used HL-2040 Foomatic/HL1250 (en) in other puppies this was shown as recommended device to use - see screen 4

I don't understand your problem. Is this not the same procedure you have used with other Puppies?

?????
Puppy does not come with a driver for your HL-2140, so you are using the next closest thing - the HL-2040.

rcrsn51 wrote: | Here is the official HL-2140 driver from Brother. |
thank you for providing this pet.
I downloaded and installed in Dpup Exprimo 5x7
On screen where you select model of printer, notice that Brother HL2140 for Cups (en) is shown
all other entries have Brother xxxxx - CUPS+Gutenprint v5,26 (en)
I installed HL2140 for CUPS (en)
Cannot print test page - receive error
Unable to send command to printer driver
Unsupported format 'application/vnd.cups-command'!
Cannot print from abiword - receive error
"/usr/lib/cups/filter/cpdftocps failed"
Rather than you waste your time on dummy like me, I will continue adding printer using HL-2040 as mentioned post above
thanks again

Thanks for your help. Was able to install my Brother DCP-J125 easily using debbi. Prior to that I was up to my ears in dpkg and apt-get and nearly pulling my hair out. Your way is much less stressful
