Excellent effort, Bruce, wish you luck maintaining it!

Sort of shows why I've been calling for a searchable database, eh? - that page must be 1/2 mile long Laughing

No, harii4

I mean something like

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=64&p=13014327

On the forum server is already a database, which we as users have no access to

The well=minded search is just google's search engine pointed to murga-linux/puppy

IF we could have user selected data tags in the existing database, a list of each example of key words/numbers/tags would be built, with results listed alphabetically/as user request and by category defined by those tags

An example, maybe, is sphinx, as used by craig's list with over 2 million hits a day

http://www.slideshare.net/streety/dedicated-search-for-a-private-phpbb-forum-using-sphinx

also, see the quick forum jump drop-down box here

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=42

See the difference/s?

The last 3 posts are totally off topic. Is it any wonder this forum is difficult to find things in sometimes!

Since no one more knowledgeable than I responded to Starhawks last question I will add my thoughts.

Usage of the LGPL, rather than GPL, is more for libraries which you are allowing to be attached to proprietary software.

In any event you cannot take GPL software, amend it and then release the amendment as LGPL as far as I am aware. Amended GPL software must be released under the same licence terms.

If it is your own GPL software you can't take back the license, of course.

However as the owner of the software, you can take the same software and license it under a different model also.

Below is an example of where I think this happened

Open http://notecase.sourceforge.net/

Commercial shareware: http://www.virtual-sky.com/

And I think he is using the open source aspell as the optional spell checker for the closed source package. But the user must install it.

Again, this is only something owners can do.

Yes - the posts were off-topic, but not importantly so, and still in the spirit of 'spreading Puppy around', as there are 3 pages discussing, essentially legal points, yet without the legal definitions being either quoted or highlighted, which can only serve to confuse, as the posts are no more than opinion, legally speaking, which again are of no use to the OP, and if he is seriously interested in finding the right info, I can only suggest reading here, as a start, or consulting a FOSS legal adviser, for certainty

http://www.opensource.org/licenses/

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#DoesTheGPLAllowMoney

http://gpl-violations.org/

Here is an example of a copyright violation, which is badly affecting the originator, and those who've enjoyed his product, due to misunderstandings about copyright holder's rights

http://forum.jbidwatcher.com/forums/2/topics/755

Licensing IS, after all, a copyright/legal issue!

Selling hardware isn't, even if it includes someone else's licensed open-source software, provided the originator's license terms are included, as noted in Barry's pm to me, in reply to my question about people selling Puppy on ebay!

I think Barry would, by now, have a good understanding of his license

As to derivatives/modifications to, or of Puppy, these are the responsibility of the coder/modifier

He doesn't understand the law, lives in a different country, the thief doesn't have deep pockets? What gives?

There shouldn't be a problem for the software owner except at first glance it looks as if he imagines one, as in, he has an illusion, meaning some considerations based on misunderstanding.

Every time I release a remastered iso I'm afraid someone will sue me Laughing

Well I guess I could have kept remastered version for my personal use only but I know other users who wouldn't know how to change some things themselves might find it usefull.

EDIT: BTW, this page http://puppylinux.com/faq.htm on official puppylinux site has some answers by Barry, scroll down to

Q: Where do I get the source code for Puppy?
Q: May I release my own distro based on Puppy?
Q: What are the legal details?

I wish Barry made anchors to link directly to page position with specific Q&A

The only ones who have standing to sue for copyright violations are the owners of the copyright.

The only ones who can seek enforcement of the license, as far as I know, are the ones who issued the license, they would also be copyright owners.

The kernel has thousands of copyright holders. Also, the only thing they can sue for is their code. But removing code on your part would be major. Keep it as part of your inventory.
