Yes but it also make use of the sensors that knows how the IP Phone tilts which is used normally to change between Portrait mode and Landscape mode of graphics.

But mostly it uses the microphone to listen to breathing and snoring and based on the frequency or beat of breathing it knows if one are awake or asleep and it knows if one snore or have a sleep apnea.
Most likely it does not know if one dream of a Dog Puppy or a Tiger Cub. Smile

I can`t imagine what it would use the tilt feature for...
It knowing awake / asleep states and snoring by examining the mic. graph,
the programmer has really put some expertise into the apps. design.!

Now it can be my bad memory but I think one actually put it in some pocket on the sleeping wear? Or is that another gadget and another app?

You could be right. I don't ahve that smartphone and only read about it breafly but as I remember it did detect body movement by using sensors on the phone and that does not work if it lay on the desk some feet or yard away

maybe we are offtopic a bit? Not something I mind but maybe not polite to the thread owner Smile

Not too far off topic I think, but not the original post...

The movement is probably used to sense restlessness during sleep.
It sounds like a great thing, and there may be special devices that do this.
If the device was smaller and low cost, it`d be better than using a cell phone.

yes I would be afraid to crack the screen by some bodily movement.
I've seen pictures of broken IP Phones. Not something one want to do teh first night one owns one Smile

There are "wrist" watches that do record movement? And there are these that use bluetooth to a wrist band thing that send signals but the watch like thing is on the couch? Cost a lot such

And sure there are those things that Doctors make use of for portable sleep lab that people take with them at home and the data is collected on a flash memory for later analyzes

Why I care about all this is due to me have sleep apnea several times each night and one can die due to such straining the heart

Yes... I`ve heard of it, if it gets bad I guess you have to sleep with an oxygen mask.

On a similar note, my daughter just dropped her cell into a bucket of water.
Off to the T-Mobile store to get her a new one... And we just got it for her!

Cool

British Telecom futurists are already planning implantable phones Smile
http://www.nanotechgalaxy.com/body-sensors-and-smart-phones-or-implantable-sensors-the-future-of-vital-signs-monitoring-that-will-change-the-patient-care/

It will make it easier to move from voicesearch to thought search
http://www.appbrain.com/app/voice-search/com.google.android.voicesearch

If I drown my phone (most unfortunate sunburnt) I hope the next generation e-ink phones will lead to submersible designs . . .
Certainly could not use my phone on a sunny day with full brightness . . . so far . . .

I rather like sketcherlite and the boat browser in Android
and rather than worrying about dying in my sleep I will make use of the 'mindfulness bell' app to keep me conscious

I am not quite ready for rooting 4 dummies but getting nearer . . .
http://www.androidauthority.com/rooting-for-dummies-a-beginners-guide-to-root-your-android-phone-or-tablet-10915/
then I could tweak

thanks guys Smile

Looks like Puppies can survive that trick, even if phones can't....

You want a non-Android Linux phone?
Get Nokia N9, while it last. Or better yet, get N950 - if you can your hands on it.

Disclaimer:
1. I'm a happy owner of N900, N9's predecessor.
2. I don't own Nokia shares
3. I won't touch any of the Nokia Windows 7 Phones with a ten-foot pole.

I've read that them had huge problems with the mechanics of the mini usb socket coming lose too easily? Maybe you where the lucky one?

re Meego? on N900. Could one use that knowledge then to put meego on any similar kind of smartphone? or are each smartphone very unique most likely. Different cpu and different hardware and so on?

Actually, the question that should be asked is this - why does one want to have puppy on the smartphone? What exactly are the "puppy features" one is looking for in a smartphone?
Nooby, I've had my N900 for over a year now. Never have any problem with it. Good, solid phone for what it does.

Very important question. I hope someone can answer it. I've felt for asking it several times but my lack of command over English made me fail to find proper words for spelling it out this explicitly. Smile

what about this then Smile

Linux Ångström provide something that comes close to a Puppy on ARM? Just Nooby's wild guess. Have not tested it yet

http://www.archos.com/products/ta/archos_43it/pclike.html?country=us&lang=en

Quote:
Dual boot between Linux Android™ and Linux Ångström for extra freedom of use
...
To allow this, ARCHOS has ‘opened up’ their Internet Tablets allowing users to install or even replace the Android system installed on the device. Experienced developers and programmers can install a complete Linux operating system such as Linux Ångström distribution (available to download from www.archos.com).

When using Linux Ångström you will be joining a community of open source developers constantly adding in new features, new apps, drivers and icons. Archos is proud to support the community of Linux on mobile platforms, and has chosen Ångström out of all Linux OS for their philosophy of creation that we both share.

I mean that would maybe allow a Puppy Developer to learn how Linux Ångström works and looks for how to change those parts of Linux Ångström that is most unlike Puppy to make Linux Ångström as Puppy like as needed for us to feel at home using a Linux Ångström Puppy derivate Puplet sort of?

Just me wild guessing. I am no Dev.

What I like about Archos 43 is that there are no fans whining in them. Totally silence but if I get it you have HDMI out using it's own socket and you have USB socket that allow USB Mouse and USB Keyboard so that way you can use the Archos at home as a thin client that can save up to 32GB on board but still save on USB external HDD much more and it can also be used when you travel on Wifi HotSpots to check emails and maybe to write on Puppy forum. And it is a small thing and not weight much either.

Dman I want to buy one Smile

If you're looking for this, then any kind of embedded linux with active development and good software selection is enough (hint: Debian Arm). It's not the only one - another example is http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Optware/HomePage for small, home NAS.

Archos is off-limit to me. I bought Archos external CD-Writer at the bargain price of $200 (this was over 10 years ago) and apart from crappy driver that often crashed the system while writing (thus creating coasters), it only managed to write about 10 or so disks before permanently turning itself into a CD-ROM drive. I had more coasters from this rubbish that written CDs.

Good question indeed.

I would like to have some of the functionality of Android in Puppy.
GPS, touchscreen
Mic, sound and earphones working (hardware integration)
App Market (includes 1000's of free software)
and so on . . .

The Asus Transformer seems the best selling device (netbook and tablet)
just been upgradeable to latest Android 3.2
ARM powered

One of the reasons to run Puppy that I can think of?
Security. Android is a 'hello world' welcome to all my data OS.
It is so transparent.
Google (the well known ad spamming agency) have every interest
in ads, providing advertisers with markets and data etc.
Google is the friend of those that pay the bills
- that would be the commercial market
We users come second

So I want Android but muzzled.
If you read what you are signing in to when you install an app
you would not . . . except they are so much fun Embarassed

I have got Android booting up from USB flash drive on my Asus Eeepc
The wifi connection did not work but Ethernet did
The apps can be stored on an SD card but for the moment every time I boot
they have to be reinstalled
and Android x86 seems to close down and not like resuming

So basically I almost have a workable Android netbook
that can also run Pupeee, Slacko, Lucid as well as the provided Xandros

The app marketplace provided for this Android x86 is limited compared to
the more complete app market place provided on phones

The Androidx86 team intend to eventually extend from Eeepc support
to other common PC hardware

Is it possible for Puppy to meet somewhere in the middle?
Can expertise for Woof ARM or Woof Android be a possibility?
Would Saluki be an ideal candidate for compilation on
specific ARM powered hardware
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puppy6

Puppy started and was designed to run from SD flash
running from microSD on old smartphones would be
fun.

It would be a very different Puppy
that would know where it was (GPS)
Would sleep with one eye open (wifi and/or 3G/4G)
Would recognize its masters voice (voice recognition built in with voice search) and so

Bring it on . . . Cool

Puppy Android
Google muzzled
