NVIDIA drivers - cannot Install & run at all !!!

#1 Post by night_mare007 »

Hey...
Let me 1st say i'm new to this forum and puppy, but not to linux. :D
i'm ubuntu user for a couple of year.

Some few background details:
- I run macpup which is puppy v525+e17 gui ( but also with jwm ).
- I use kernel 2.6.33.2 and have kernel_src-2.6.33.2-patched.sfs and lupu_devx_525.sfs loaded ( for Orig nvidia drivers compiling )
- I installed the Update_lucid52-001 instant update.
( not b1 or b2 - which i don't know what are they )

I want to install NVIDIA drivers for my "360m GTS" card ( on my laptop )
I tried at first to install driver v256 and v195 from PPM ( separately of course ), kill Xorg, performed xorgwizard, used auto-scan, picked a 1024x768@16 bit res, applied - and BOOM.
X won't load, so I backed up Xorg.conf before that and reverted back to it to load back X, without Nvidia ( I guess it uses Vesa... successfully )

Then I tried to install Nvidia's drivers .pet from other sources like http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... ges-lucid/.

To uninstall every driver, I used PPM to uninstall the .pet, and then ran "rmmod nvidia" @ terminal as the driver popup ordered.

Then I it got really frustrating, and I decided to compile the drivers for myself.
I ran puppy with devx + kernel source SFSs loaded, and download the latest v280.13 driver from nvidia.com.
I chmod +X it, and ran it. BOOM.... Error.. !
Here's the installation log:
nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'

Now.. let me say that I don't know If i have OpenGL install at all, and whether it connected to this HUGE Nvidia installation problem I got.
the output from "system information" tool I got under "display" section about OpenGL is that:
Vedor+ Renderer + Version is Unknown and Direct rendering is NO.

PLEASE HELP ME !
I know it's possible to enable Nvidia drivers this fraking toaster.
( :!: Poll: say woof-woof if you like this last statment  )

From the looks of it, you did everything right. But obviously it does not work.

So, to eliminate any other possibility, I'd start with an entirely fresh installation.
Start Puppy with puppy pfix=ram (from CD) or just with pfix=ram (with Grub) at the first welcome screen. Then use the quickpet procedures to install nvidia. (One driver at a time; if you'd have to try more than one, start anew with pfix=ram)
If it works, you have something in your installed version, that prevents nvidia from working properly. Solution: Build the pupsave file once more from scratch.
If it doesn't work, then I'd conclude your hardware to be the culprit.

Where did you get the kernel source? There is a similar one that is compiled in Quirky Linux which could be borking you.

Get this one:

Thanks m8...

That got around the problem - a little bit forward:
Now I got another error - W/R style....

here's the part where it got weird:

Code: Select all

-> Searching for conflicting OpenGL files:
-> done.
-> Installing 'NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86' (280.13):
ERROR: Unable to create '/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so' for

ERROR: Unable to create '/usr/bin/nvidia-xconfig' for copying (Input/output
       error)
-> The installer has encountered the following error during installation: 'Cann

   nswer: No)
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
       driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

During the installation - When I got the 1st error, I told it "yes" to ignore the error and move forward... but it just got me more errors... so I stopped the process.
I execed the Nvidia.RAN file while X was killed ( as the driver told me to do ) and I was logged as root of course...
the Nvidia.RAN sits under /root/Downloads folder.

1 other thing...
I think I don't have OpenGL installed on my system.
I don't have glxgear command... only glxinfo.
I also stated above that at the "hardware information" util, under "display" section, OpenGL values are unknown.

I tried to look for the appropriate XORG DRI .PET module for my Xorg v1.7.6..... BUT DIDN'T FOUND ONE TO DOWNLOAD. ( I read somewhere that I should install this module in order to add opengl to my system.
On the net there's only 1.7.5 version to download... not 1.7.6 !

What should I do ?

That's a little harsh don't you think.

I have one machine here that has an nVIDIA card (FX5200), plus another that has built-in ATI (HD 4250) graphics.

Provided that i have the correct devx and kernel-sources installed (and those packages are not broken in any way)
i have always been able to build the driver for either of those cards with no problem at all.

I made a pet package of last driver for nvidia cards with opengl for lupu 5.2.8 k2.6.33.2 (i tested it);
here the link:

nvidia-opengl-k2.6.33.2-295.33.pet

it has glxinfo and glxgears and the hardinfo show opengl render.
here the list of supported nvidia cards (also geforce 360M gts):

Thanks Speedyluck!
I tried recently to convert a Win7 user to Puppy (latest Lucid 5.28+Wine) using both a custom-built ISO/CD and USB install, on his ASUS lappie. His specs fail me at present, but it was quad-core with 2GB ram, with a GT 520M videocard that xorgborked despite all my attempted workarounds without internet access. (Xvesa was 'fine', but the system refused to load jwm, and there were issues with various programs in icewm).
Your pet looks the charm - I'll let you know how it works out, cheers :)
