MS Fonts ( Arial, Tomaha, etc... )

#1 Post by night_mare007 »

Hi,
I wanted to add MS fonts to my Lupu 5.25.... so I started to dig a bit in the forum and found that THIS OLD THREAD contains a small package of font that I think are FREE to use, as they come from an old public file published by MS long time ago.

I only converted the .Pet to .SFS file, and renamed them both.
Download ~5MB:
.SFS FILE
.PET File

YAY, thank you! Easy download, easy installation. Works like a charm in Firefox (that was to be expected  but still it looks so much better now).

Kind regards,
Th.

How do I use a Windows TT font I downloaded from the internet? Shinobar's Winfonts.pet only looks in Windows and I don't have Windows in this machine.
The font I want to try is Chinese Watch Shop.

In general, you can put the TT font(*.ttf) in '/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF' by the ROX-Filer.
You may need to run a command 'fc-cache -f' from a terminal. You can see the available fonts by Gfontsel or by the command 'fc-list'.

It seems not chinese font. Its file size is only 59kB, too small if you want to show chinese characters.

Its not a chinese font, just the name have the word 'chinese'...
No big deal, Flash, you can add it trough pfont or pfont2 (or simply copy it to /ust/share/fonts/Default/TTF).

Thanks, Shinobar and GustavoYz. I copied the TTF file to /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF and then I was able to see it in Menu -> Desktop -> Gfontsel font viewer. :) As you say, GustavoYz, it is not a Chinese font, but an English font that someone saw on the door of an old Chinese watch shop somewhere.

The font only looks right when the letters are large, so it needs to fill the screen. Maybe it would look good as the title font for a black-and-white retro Puppy.

I find after installing fonts, bold letter on the web (or at least on the Wiki) no longer show in bold. For example, the questions on this page should be bold, and were until install fonts

anyone else experienced this? is there a work around?

Attached overwrites /etc/fonts/local.conf so that artificial oblique and bold be enabled.

After installing the msfonts .pet the CJK fonts are disabled - Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are displayed as squares. Uninstall msfonts and reading in those languages is normal again. The CJK fonts are from langpack_cjk.

Thanks, I'm trying this today ; -)

Can't reproduce the error, but I'm going to keep using your version of /etc/fonts/local.conf

Sorry to be a bummer but doesn't MS have copyright on its fonts (except for like 8 that it released to public 10+ years back).

This should help clear up any confusion, MS released about 65 TTF fonts for free public use, referred to as " TrueType Core Fonts for the Web" They are still legal to use when distributed in their original released packages.

http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_fonts_for_the_Web

http://web.nickshanks.com/fonts/microso ... -web-fonts

Available for download here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/corefon ... nts/final/

In my puppy they are installed to /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/

Get Microsoft Fonts
cabextract
msttcore fonts

Now we are going to install the microsoft core fonts.‭ ‬It is suitable for all people who share office documents with Microsoft Users,‭ ‬or people who use the MS Core font collection as a common font base across platforms.‭
Get the core fonts here:‭ ‬http://web.nickshanks.com/fonts/microso ... -web-fonts
They are packed as‭ *‬.exe files and have to be extracted first by using the command line tool cabextract.‭ ‬Don’t be afraid,‭ ‬it is not too complicated.‭ ‬But it is a bit of time consuming work.‭ ‬The benefit is that you can read all documents from other people using the mainstream font families without having strange looking line-‭ ‬and page breaks.

Get cabextract here:‭ ‬http://www.smokey01.com/coolpup/cabextr ... 110523.pet

Download it,‭ ‬double click to install or use PPM and keep it for later use.

Then do as follows.

Usage:‭ ‬cabextract‭ [‬options‭] [‬-d dir‭] <‬cabinet file(s‭)>

This will extract all files from a cabinet or executable cabinet.
For multi-part cabinets,‭ ‬only specify the first file in the set.

Options:
