Firefox 7 Beta.. HUGE improvement

#1 Post by DaveS »

I have been running Firefox 7 Beta for a few days now and can report that this seems to be the Firefox we have been waiting for. It now feels as snappy as Chrome, actually loads much faster than Chrome from a fresh boot, and just as fast for subsequent re-loads. It does not slow down over time either like previous versions.
I have installed a 'must have' add-on called Add-On Compatibility Reporter, which basically allows you to run all your previously installed add-ons instead of reporting them as incompatable as in the past. This allows to to see whether they actually do run or not. In my case, they all do. Its about time!
This Firefox finally seems to be getting there :)

i have have to agree DaveS. I gave it a try after reading your post and it's definitely faster. As you say, on par with chrome and opera. All my add-ons are working as well :)

+1

I've been using the beta update channel, so FF7 was automatically installed.
And yes, all add-ons functional!

I haven't seen any Peacekeeper results yet, but it certainly feels fast...

Thanks for this thread. I didn't know a beta of Firefox 7 was out but I've downloaded it now and will try it soon.

This makes a change from people insisting on running firefox but complaining about each version being worse than the last :)

What's the projected time for the 'actual' release of FF7?

Ought to try it on my Puppy setup and see how it performs... I've installed FF5.0.1 from the default archive from Mozilla, and it seems to be doing okay (3.6.x and 4 didn't fare as well on the roughly eleven-year-old hardware; same for Seamonkey 2.1+), though I haven't added any bookmarks or extensions to it, yet.

Hah Dave, really? My Firefox has only just updated itself to 6, I didn't even know there was a 7. Man, they're releasing versions as fast as Puppy back in the old days. I'll have to look into it, you make it sound really good :)

I feel overwhelmed. I guess I have to create a new pupsave file with that new FF7 so I can safely test it before changing from 6 to 7

which puppy would it work best on?

Lupu 525 or 528 or Slacko or Dexprimo or what?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Guys look what I have found :)

Firefox Aurora even more modern than 7 or 8 or 9 ???
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/
Experience the newest innovations before they go to beta in an environment that’s not for the faint of heart
Provide feedback on features and performance to help determine what makes the final release
My lupu/luci-529 updated from FF5 to FF 6 using the internal update.

How does one trick that one to go to this url and upgrade to 7 or the aurora?

Because if I just take down the FF7 then I need a pet done don't I?

Ah Runtt21 tells how one does it. Like this:
Download the linux version.
Unpack it and move the firefox folder to /usr/lib/firefox.

If you don't already have firefox installed make a link from the firefox script inside /usr/lib/firefox to usr/bin and it will run.
sounds easy but I feel very unsure of how one do an unpack

Edit as I expected it was not easy at all. it was impossible to understand.

I went here as them told me
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/ ... 86.tar.bz2

But that one does not have any firefox.so in it. It has extremely many files. fills two pages of Rox if one look at it.

Nowwhere does it have a Firefox.so to move. How should one do it?

How do I tell FF6.0 to do that?

I have a link to how it looks on my computer. How does one get the firefox.so thing?

I only get numerous dirs and files and no such .so thing at all.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 780#556780

Edit oops I think I get it now. There is no .so one move the whole folder but deleting the old one. I have done that now and will test sorry!

Don't know where I got that firefox.so from. it is the dir that one move

I made a .pet for you nooby. It is here http://puppylinuxstuff.meownplanet.net/DaveS/firefox/

If you already have Firefox installed, it will overwrite it. It SHOULD also automatically update when a new beta is released.

Thanks Dave that was very nice and friendly of you but now when I followed what Runtt21 really wrote instead of following what my brain misconstrued using his clear writing then it just worked. I am in FF 7.0 now Beta and it works good. Have not tried youtube or local TV. I go do that now. Yes youtube just works

so hope the pet you made can help others.

Tiny fonts always returning

#15 Post by Laie »

Firefox 7 Beta installed.
When I come to the Puppy Forum the fonts are very tiny - too tiny for my old eyes ;-) . I zoom in (Ctrl;+) and the fonts get bigger. I click into the next page and the fonts are tiny again. It sucks. What's my fault?
Changing the font size in Edit/Preferences/Content doesn't help.

Another thing:
When starting Firefox two tabs get opened: My start page and the Mozilla Firefox Start Page.

click the 'advanced' button in edit>preferences>content>fonts and colors, and increase the minimum font size.
edit>preferences>general, and configure what ff displays when it starts.

Laie that is how Mozilla Firefox wants it. It is a free software and that tab is their way to say. Hey we are the ones doing all the work. Maybe you as user can join our program for giving feedback :)

So it should look like that. But as Dave suggest you can change the preferences.

Thanks, DaveS,
I missed the button minimum font size, stupid me...
And I never noticed the small difference: If there are more than one tabs opened, the button in edit>preferences>general says "current pages". I just had to close the other tab and choose "current page".
Hmm, oops again.

Using nooby's .pet

I downloaded and am using this .pet. It seems to work well.

DaveS: I don't understand your statement,
"I SHOULD also automatically update....."

Should it read
"IT SHOULD also automatically update when a new beta is released"?

Thank You!
