It might help if you told us more about your hardware. I.e., laptop or desktop, brand and model. Also, motherboard, chipset, etc., if known.

smartlink

#3 Post by dr1445 »

There is a puppyget for the smartlink modem. I have not been able to get it to install correctly, maybe you will have better luck. i get an error in the usr/sbin/slmodem, a big red error! i use an Amigo AME-CA95 serial modem, that works great on almost all linux. it's around $24 over at the newegg website. i am using the amigo now with puppy firefox. no problems, hooked up the first time.

The Smartlink PupGet is for the 2.6 kernel -- I think it says so in the package name.

If I recall rightly, 1.0.3 has everything already installed for using Smartlink modems.
The "Setup -> Get package extensions" does have a pkg for Smartlink but I think that stuff is already in 1.0.3

-- note, I have tidied this up for 1.0.4.
but, can't actually test anything as don't have a smartlink modem.

The error message seems to be garbage. I get it too and I have a generic slmodem card. with an Intel chipset board. Check /dev/ttySL0, and it should exist. However gtkdial never ever works ever ever ever. I can dial with eznet and it tries to authenticate. So, the modem works despite the IRQ error mesage.

Is there anything that can be used instead of gkdial. I have years and years of failure with it, on different distributions and different machines. It has NEVER EVER worked. Kind of pisses you off when that happens.

...hmm, interesting. I use Gkdial on a range of different machines and modems, works well for me.
I think though, the key to your problem may be the modem initialisation string -- as I recall, the initialisation string in the original source package didn't work for me, so I changed it, but it still needs to be tweaked for some modems.

I have put some more info about this into the Internet Howto help page for Pup 1.0.4. Also, the program wvdialconfig can help to obtain the best initialisation string -- do a search of this forum or the wiki for more info.

Right now, I'm using an old external serial modem that I bought for A$5 at a swap-meet, and I set the initialisation string to just "ATZ", works like a charm with Gkdial.

Oh yes, Pup 1.0.3 also has the wvdial program that can be used to dialup, but you will need to read the docs on wvdial and wvdialconfig, in /usr/share/doc/wvdial-1.42/.

I want my sister to use this. Her experience goes to the extent of reaping Outlook consequences despite all that I have said. There is no way she will ever get to the stage of altering a modem control string.
I also have an old serial modem, but that is not going to help, we live in different countries.
I have also tried Motorola and other external modems with gkdial.. Believe me, it is an absolute disaster here is my control string :
"ATZw S0=0 S7=45 &c1 E1 L1 M2 Q0 V1 X4"
The w is so it politely drops out if someone is already talking on the phone line. The rest came from minicom, with audio turned on, just a personal preference.

Apart from this glitch, Puppy is ideal for the next time she turns on her computer and has to reformat her hard drive again.

abc,
what country are you in?
...perhaps Gkdial likes certain telecom systems better than others!

Either N.Z. or Oz, depends. I cant remember if I ever tried gdial in Oz, but I go back a long way, to 1995 and slackware. I think Vector put gkdial on their desktop too. Same dismal result. There is one thing I must test on Puppy, and that is ungrab_winmodem which is necessary with that Intel chipset and Arch Linux. The modem works out of the box with Linspire 5.0, but Linspire thrashes the HD every TEN seconds. That is absolutley terrific. I love it when they do things like that so I only burn R-Ws these days.

Does anyone have a PCI SmartLink modem working in Puppy?

#12 Post by Walt H »

I just got this new computer which came with Xandros 3.0 installed and a SmartLink PCI modem. The modem works in Xandros, but the distro itself is dog slow. Puppy 1.0.3 seems to fly on this machine, but I can't get the modem to work. The ttySL0 button is available when I run the modem wizard, but it says there is no irq assigned. Neither Gkdial nor eznet works. Haven't tried wvdial yet as it seemed harder to configure the last time I set up a modem in Puppy.

When I go to the KDE Control Center in Xandros, I see the following when I click on PCI:

Code: Select all

0000:00:02.6 Modem: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] AC'97 Modem Controller (rev a0)(prog-if 00 [Generic])
Subsystem: Unknown device 1849:9739
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 10
I/O ports at d400 [size=256]
I/O ports at d000 [size=128]
Capabilities: <available only to root>
I have to put in the root password in order to use KPPP.

When I go to Hardware Detection, this is the information listed about the modem:

Code: Select all

class = 0x070300
classname = Modem
desc = AC'97 Modem Controller
kernel drivers = 8250_pci snd-intel 8x0m
manu = Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]
pci = 0x1039, 0x7013, 0x1849, 0x9739
revision = a0
subdesc = 9739
submanu = 7013
I don't know whether any of that is on any use to anyone, but I'm hopeful someone can help me get dialup working with this modem. Buying another modem is not an option at the moment. Let me know if there is other information that might help. Thanks.
Walt

Now that you point it out to me, the answer seems painfully obvious.
