Cielo Puppy Wary 5 Subject description: Internet connection failure after second boot |
|
Using puppy Cielo based on Wary 5 it would connect to the internet once, but after the second boot it would not connect any more.
It seems that the first dhcp request from Cielo worked successfully but then caused the router to go into a state where it would refuse to issue any other new dhcp leases. This affected the second and subsequent boots of the Cielo puppy pc but also prevented any other PC (including a Windows XP netbook) from being able to request a dhcp connection.
This could only be resolved by turning the router off/on and waiting for the ADSL to re-establish. Then rebooting the Cielo PC. Very annoying and time consuming.
Barry K refers to dhcpcd problems having crept back into Wary in this blog comment:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02352
He mentions the dhcpcd pet and this did resolve the problem for me on Cielo Wary 5 in an installed environment (but the problem will still remain in a live cd obviously).
Note that the pet file name is misspelt though. The actual pet is available here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/pet_packages-wary5/dhcpcd-5.2.12-1-w5.pet
I think some routers are very susceptible to the faulty dhcpcd code and I suspect this is responsible for internet connection failures with many other previous puppy versions, particularly in a Live CD environment where you cannot change the dhcpcd code that is written on the CD.

Interesting. I'm giving Cielo a spin now and I'll let you know if this happens when I log out and reboot into a different (or the same) distro.
Certainly a cool project though. It looks good and comes with a big selection of apps including Open Office, Opera and Seamonkey.

Looks OK to me so far, no problems with Internet connection at all either when booting up in a different distro after using Cielo or when returning to it.

Back in Cielo again and on my old machine after a disastrous install of Mageia 3 RC (don't ask) left my Optiplex with severe problems. I'm going to have to DBAN the hard drive soon, start again and reinstall.everything (at least I make regular backups now, so all was not lost).
In the meantime though, Cielo's working fine .

Dear greengeek
Many thanks for uploading the ISO of Puppy Cielo wary 5 which I have successfully downloaded, frugal installed and booted the system with. This thanks giving note is being posted through Opera in that puplet . Thank yu once again for uploading the puplet as requested.
Through this post I further express my sincere gratitude to all the contributing members like greengeek of the Forum, who has been spending their valuable time and efforts to help the novices like me in the time of need.. It is through their help that I am able to productively use my 13 year old Pentium III 666 Mhz. computer. It is only because of Puppy Linux that I am reluctant to upgrade/replace my computer as it is very much fulfiling my requirement as a home user. I have migrated from Windows to Puppy Linux 4.5 years ago having being frustrated by constantly locating, installing and updating anti virus softwares.
Kindly accept my thanks once again.

Thanks for this. My original CD-R of Cielo stopped booting for some reason so I had to download and burn a fresh copy before I could use it again.
It's a very good choice for old computers IMO; full-featured with Open Office and two browsers (Firefox and Opera), and yet it still fits on a single CD.

I'm using Wary 5.5 now with some of the additional software that Cielo has, added on top, and I think Wary would be a good choice for a community version of Puppy (especially for those of us with older computers).
It seems to put a lot less stress on my computer (due to its older libraries making less demand on my hardware) than other recent Puppies do.
Puppy Precise Retro also runs well on my machine but more noisily than Wary does, indicating that it needs more resources to run properly than Wary.
