Wireless Security Low Spec

#1 Post by cthisbear »

For ages I avoided wireless networking.

But after buying my Acer Netbook to take to Japan with me
earlier this year

an eMachines eM350-21G16i

http://apcmag.com/notebookhunter/emachi ... 21g16i.htm

I have done plenty of wireless evaluation.
And it ain't pretty.

Having all my multi puppies running off usb...20 plus
has given me the freedom to test test test.

And it's made me quite testy

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/testy

"""""""""

The Acer netbook runs the Atheros 9285 wireless.

I bought a Netgear DGN2000
and I have been a very happy camper.

http://www.netgear.com.au/au/Product/Ro ... ys/DGN2000

As many of you know I run a >>> hidden wireless network.
Meaning that I do not advertise my router's name.

The name is split............. and I have 15 keys

and >> WPA2-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key)

::::::::

Few Puppies can see this combination.

Fluppy is one of the few.
It has to be said that >> jemimah >> has done sterling work.

Fluppy 06 works with PWireless2.
Fluppy 09 and Frisbee work...and quickly.
Fluppy 10 works with Frisbee.
Fluppy 13 works with Frisbee.

Pupeee 8 works.

Does any other puppy I have tested work????
Yeah! right....echo...echo moment.

"""""""""

Today I saw this >> Kinda Lucid Puppy 006

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=57371

" To sum up, Kinda Lucid Puppy is a "generic" puplet that offers
all traditional Puppy stuff and sticks with Puppy tradition of
small size and home-made applications, while providing a better
usage experience. "

Maybe I was busy at the time...but what a gem.

For >> Iguleder - in a genius moment has given me

Pwireless 2
Network Wizard >> Dougal
Simple Network
Network Wizard Classic >> Barry

They said it couldn't be done
Shouldn't be done
Clashes

Well I have to say to all who listened to that waffle...
that was total bullshit.

In fact it is so good that I just start to run the Simple Network
and whilst that is running I also run >> Pwireless 2
which picks me up straight away.

I rebooted afresh...no save and I just ran Pwireless 2 instead of the above...and a Whoa moment...it just works.

So whilst all the crapola and drivel has been about running as
root and spot....

one of the real security issues >> Better Wireless Security
has been totally ignored here....
No 0ne has improved on our wireless security by default.

It is a total farce and we need to look at it properly.
Wireless will just be more of a force.
It will be cheaper and more widespread.

Iguleder has proven it can be done.
I run Puppy 4.3.1 and cannot get my wireless to work,
no matter how I have approached it.

But this version of 4.3.1 is a goer.

And I am getting to be a better cheat as my

>>>latest April 2011 technique shows.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=66936

This is not just a rant.
This is a plea for a comprehensive common sense approach.
But sometimes the boat needs rocking.

I understand that we have great artisans for drivers etc here.
Our numbers grow daily...28000 plus...
including spammers ha! ha!.

Surely someone can get the details from Iguleder
and we can implement them asap.

And a pox on spot.

///////////

I have also mentioned Hotspot Shield in the past.
Because of Firesheep and the like.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firesheep

http://hotspotshield.com/

" Secure your web session, data, online shopping, and personal
information online with HTTPS encryption.
Protect yourself from identity theft online.
Hide your IP address for your privacy online.
Access all content privately without censorship; bypass firewalls.
Protect yourself from snoopers at Wi-Fi hotspots, hotels, airports,
corporate offices. "

Maybe someone can give us a Puppy clone eventually.
Yes I know that there is no Linux version...but who knows??

Professor Iguleder...I salute you.

Chris.

Thanks for this thread. Wifi security is a needed thing indeed.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

install in wine?
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Was for some reason in Windows and installed it.
It's a kinda proxy on a port of 127.0.0.1
I got a complete different IP then that of my ISP.
Something from nLcommunications.com (if I remember well (back in dpup now)

Might try to install in wine.

No one has improved on our wireless security by default.
Before anyone assumes that a hidden SSID offers a greater level of security, I suggest they read this post by rarsa in 2008 -
"HOW-TO have a more secure wireless network (counterintuitiv)"
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=207892
... your hidden SSID may be providing nothing more than a false sense of security.

What's so complicated? Is it not just a case of Pwireless2 doing a better job of wifi configuration (in this particular case)?
If so, Pwireless2 is available for download here -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=48816
Just install it, and be happy.

Chris, I'm not trying to discourage you from achieving good wifi security ...
but be careful about what you presume to be good wifi security.

rarsa (Raul Suarez) knows his stuff, and for best possible wifi security I suggest you follow his advice,
which is summarised at the very start of his post.

Thanks tempestuous and Chris for providing the opportunity to discuss this.

But that is how I connect to my router.

So how does one do a "secure" connection when traveling and being at
a "Hot Spot" say Waynes Cafe something? their Router does not know me!

nooby Quite a few ways here are just a few for example vpn for web browsing (OpenVPN as an example which there is a pet here for by me) , making sure any sensitive information on your computer is kept in a secure container (Truecrypt, SD4L, FPM2) , using encryption while on the web or using email (SSL protocol) , use pidgin with OTR for secure chat (other person must have OTR also).

My main PC's only internet connection is via wireless, using a Netgear WN111v2 USB dongle to connect to our Netgear DGN2000 router. Security is WPA2 PSK with hidden SSID. Performance with Lucid Puppy releases has always been excellent.
The only Puppy version I have had problems with wireless on was Slacko 531.
Zhaan - AMD K6 2 500, 512MB RAM, ATI Rage 128 VR. Full install Wary 5.5 HardInfo Report
Merlin - Core i5-4590, 8GB RAM, Radeon R9 270X. Slacko 5.7.0
