I just downloaded the tar.gz version and installed it in Puppy 4.3.1 (in which I already had 6.3a installed) -- this worked fine (I don't know if the linux installer will install everything you need from scratch, however)

Thank you RetroTechGuy, my save file of Fluppy 005 crashed (I was trying to create a theme & the whole screen went black) yesterday but as 006 is promised soon I will give it a go then.

If it doesn't work as a straight install, then install the 6.3a .pet, and upgrade to 7.0a from the tar.gz.

I tried the Truecrypt 7.0a installer in Lupu 5.1.1 and am having trouble.

When it runs it puts out a little message that says it needs the fuse library and dev mapper tools to run, not being particularly specific about the names.

I assumed they were not part of the Truecrypt install, and that I had to put them in. I went looking for a fuse library in the Puppy package manager, and all I could find was called fuse-utils_2.8.1, so I guessed it might be that and tried to install it. It had a series of dependencies which I also installed, except for one called perlapi (perlapi-5.10.0) which I can't find anywhere. :(

Then I tried looking for anything resembling "dev mapper tools" in the package manager, and found nothing at all.

It astounds me an item like this is so difficult to install. Does everyone have to go through this to get Truecrypt, or am I just being stupid?

Is this a command-prompt error, or does the program run (opening a GUI), but bark some message?

Under 4.3.1, it barks something about encryption not being built into the kernel, but the GUI comes up -- and then requires you turn off something in one of the options (I'll have to go back and look to tell you which option).

I'm wondering if this is simple a new variation of the older message.

Update: that setting is under: Settings > Preferences > System Integration (select the option "do not use kernel cryptographic services")

It was a little window, not command-line.

I might try it again and see if I can find that parameter to turn off kernel services. I think there is a way from the command line to turn it off too (IIRC, looking at those same threads you did).

Why should truecrypt be so hard to install? It's enough to get me looking for alternatives. Anybody have any recommendations that way?

I recall a popup window complaining that encryption wasn't built into the kernel (which was what I corrected by turning it off).

The only variable I didn't try, was direct installation of Truecrypt 7.0

http://puppylinux.org/wikka/TrueCrypt
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=26712

I had installed the 6.3 .pet, and then installed the 7.0 .tar.gz later (edit: replace ".deb" with "tar.gz")

I don't know if this actually makes any difference -- but it is possible that 6.3 installed some required libraries. I haven't tried it under 5.1.1

It wasn't hard to install, other than figuring out to turn off encryption services. The "system integration" tab is found under Settings -> Preferences

To open a Truecrypt volume, I find it easiest to simply drag the icon into the Truecrypt window (it doesn't matter where -- you'll see the file path appear on the command line), then select the mount point (e.g. "10"), then open. The mounted volume will be /mnt/truecrypt10 (if you chose "10").

If you use these cross-platform, think carefully about the internal volume format (since the WinXp ext2ifs tool won't read Puppy's standard 256 inode volumes, only 128 inode volumes -- however, Puppy will read/write NTFS and VFAT/Fat32 volumes)
Why should truecrypt be so hard to install? It's enough to get me looking for alternatives. Anybody have any recommendations that way?
Good luck with that...

Truecrypt is probably the most well-maintained. Scramdisk had a Win98, and Scramdisk4Linux is under development -- but last time I looked, not nearly the mature package that Truecrypt is.

Truecrypt has a XP-family version (but no Win98 version). Scramdisk has a commercial XP version, in addition to the freeware Win98 (and developing Scram4Linux) -- so for true portability...

E4M is out there, but hasn't been updated in a long time (I believe you can get the source, and there may exist a Linux version) -- but I found the interface a bit clunky.

Of course, for file encryption, there is gpg (i.e. PGP), but you don't get the potentially more useful encrypted volumes.

Sarah Dean has a good discussion of encryption packages, and comparisons on her site:

I just looked at the wikka link, and discovered that "bugs" has disappeared from puppy.asia...

So, here's the 6.3a .pet file I had downloaded from there. Under 4.3.1, I had already installed 6.3a, and simply installed the tar.gz for 7.0a -- which worked fine (perhaps the 6.3a installed some required libraries).

OK, I decided to ignore the message, and to just do a direct install of truecrypt-7.0a-setup-x86, without trying to find any extra packages for it. I then went in and disabled use of kernel cryptographic services (it warned this would cause slow access times) and guess what, it works! On a 1MB volume anyway.

The only question now is how slow it will be on an 8GB volume, but I will find out soon enough I guess.

Moral of the story, don't get too paranoid about warning messages...

It seems pretty quick on most any size volume. From my (user-level) view, it looks just like any other volume access. I suppose if I timed it, I would find it slightly slower, as it is performing on-the-fly-encryption, but it isn't noticeable to me (my netbook is a 900MHz, and it's fine on that).

Yup, it works great on an 8GB flash drive (I did buy a fast flash drive though).

So I guess there is really no need for a truecrypt pet.

I did notice the install put the truecrypt entry in the "Utility" part of the menu. I edited .jwmrc to move it over to "Filesystem", and found it an icon to use (actually probably just needed the full path on the icon it was pointing to, but I just copied that icon over to the other icon directory that seems to be the default path for icons).

The only problems that I've had with Truecrypt is volume formats. I recently created an ext2 under Puppy, and WinXP couldn't read it (Puppy default is 256 Inode, and ext2ifs can only mount 128 inode volumes). I had previously created an NTFS volume with Truecrypt under Windows, and if it is not cleanly unmounted, then Puppy cannot mount it (until you repair it). So I created a new one as "fat" (vfat) and moved all of my junk there -- as long as you aren't trying to store files larger than 4GB, it will work fine.

I also like to make a tiny volume (~10MB) and store passwords, credit card numbers, contact info, and such in it. Small enough to leave on a flash drive without worrying about space, etc.

Thank you for this. I was able to use this thread to install TrueCrypt-7.0a to Puppy v4.3.1. but I am still having trouble.

I was not able to install 7.0a directly but the following worked:

Note- downloads were all performed with Firefox running in W7, then moved to the Puppy machine with a USB flash drive.

First I downloaded and installed TC 6.3a from RetroTechGuy's link above.

Next, I right clicked the truecrypt-7.0a.pet link from http://puppylinux.org/wikka/TrueCrypt.

From the right click contest menu, I selected “save link as...

OK, so I figured it out. It is mounted in in: /mnt/truecrypt10. It even says so, right there in the TC Mound Directory column.

To find mnt, I clicked the little house icon on the desktop, clicked the up aerow to go up one directory, and found the mnt folder there.

Yup.

I generally drag a link to /mnt/ to the desktop (if you drag it there, Puppy creates a shortcut to that folder).

Then you just look there for mounted partitions.

Just to confirm and bring this thread up-to-date:

Installed Truecrypt in Lucid 526rc. A direct install from the tar.gz or from the 7.0a Pet didn't work. It barks for a missing dmsetup.

So I installed the 6.3-pet first and then replaced /usr/bin/truecrypt (6.3 version) with the unpacked identical file from the tar.gz (7.0a version).

Changed the settings as described in this thread.

Started Truecrypt and it works fine as version 7.0a.

Newbie here, so not sure if this is the right place for this question.

I'm running Wary Puppy 5.1.4.1 (and really like it) but I'm having problems with Truecrypt. I finally got Truecrypt 7.1 installed using the suggestions in this thread (I had the "dmsetuup not found" error until I disabled encryption in Truecrypt, and now I can mount and unmount Truecrypt containers, but when I try to open the mounted container, Truecrypt says "no such file or directory: nautilus" -- what's up with this, and is there an easy fix? Thanks.

Never mind, I figured it out. I had to open the volume from /mnt/truecrypt1 rather than from directly in Truecrypt. It's all working now.

Truecrypt 7.0a on Puppy 525 directory names truncated

#20 Post by Barkin »

Truecrypt 7.0a on Puppy 525, directory names in truecrypt file ("volume") have become truncated.

Truecrypt 7.0a running on lupu-525 kernel 2.6.33.2

originally Trucrypt worked flawlessly, however now it displays directory names truncated to six characters with “~1
