Sound and trackpad not working in Lucid Puppy

#1 Post by brownbear »

Hi,

I am a novice computer user completely tired of windows so I decided to give puppy linux a try. I successfully managed to install it on to USB and I can load it fine on my sony vaio Y series laptop. However, the sound and the trackpad does not work. I am running lucid puppy the latest version.

Can someone please help? I don't have much computer background so detailed instructions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Dewbie

Did you run the ALSA Sound Wizard?
(It should be somewhere in the menu.)

Hi
Yes I tried and it still did not work.

But now I changed laptops. I installed lucid pupy on my old macbook pro and so far the essentials are all working. I still have a few things I need to setup. I will post here again if I need help.

Thanks Dewbie for your help.

Any idea how I close this thread anyone??

Yes I tried and it still did not work.
Is this a reference to sound, trackpad, or both?
(As long as both problems aren't solved, I would leave the thread as is.)

Here's another thread that may be helpful:

I am having a similar issue in 5.2.8. Sound was working fine when I installed it, but somewhere along the line it went away. I installed Truecrypt and LibreOffice, and both are working with no problems, but I have no sound icon in the system tray and no players will produce sound (I have tried several). AlsaMixer will not run at all. I've tried running the Alsa sound wizard, and it seems to detect my sound card fine, but playing a sound sample produces nothing.

If I revert to Wary 5.1.4.1 sound works fine, but I lose my Truecrypt and LibreOffice installs.

I'm a newbie, so I imagine this is a simple switch I'm missing somewhere, but I can't find it. Any help? Otherwise I really like Puppy...

I have a similar problem with sound. . . When first installing from CD sound works do complete install to Hard disk or re-running from CD sound has go away. I run the wizard sound is back, reboot sound is gone again.

Seems some file is not being saved or not being read at boot up.
Any clues?

Which version of Puppy are you using?
What kind of hardware are you using?

I found a Youtube video that showed me how to get sound back. It says Puppy 5.10, but it worked with 5.2.5 for me.
I don't know if the fix will survive a reboot. Yet.

Handyman's How to get sound working on puppy linux 5.10

Open the console, type what he types on the screen.
Puppy didn't like the 5 he used in the last line of his typing, so I retyped the line with a 4. It worked. Sound is back.

OK I should have mention my software and hardware systems. I run Puppy Linux 4.3.1 "dual boot" on an old Compaq Armada 1573DM Lap top and a old Toshiba Satellite 200CDS Lap top. these systems have 256 meg or less of ram, they cash off the hard drive. The hard drives are small too. . . if you need to know give me a minute or to to check the size.
I run Puppy Linux Puppy Linux 5.2.8 on two work stations I built up from parts the older one only has 512 Meg ram and a 20 gig Hd. The other work station has 1 gig ram and 60 gig hd. they are running Pentium processors.
My Media system hooked to the TV in the living room runs dual boot on Puppy Linux 5.2.8 it is an IBM Think Center with 1 gig ram and 160 Hd.

The system I am typing on right now is an HP Pavilion XH485 lap top it has 512 meg ram, Athlon 4 processor, 30 gig Hd Running Puppy Linux 5.2.8 dual boot. My other laptop also dual boot Puppy Linux 5.2.8 Compaq Presario 1500.768 meg of ram, Pentium 4 CPU, 28 gig Hd. Also dual boot Puppy Linux 5.2.8

I have decided just to use 5.2.8 and ALSA sound wizard when needed. Later I will write a script or type in a patch as needed to fix the sound. I will have to give the typed patch posted above a try sometime.

When I find a better ISO I will upgrade, I like Puppy 5.2.8 running the Ubuntu Kernal, I was running Ubuntu for the longest time, but it is just too bulky for me and installing took all day like windows does.

Not trying to steal this thread so I am done typing on the subject. F.G.
