Puppy2 boot error: "touch: cannot touch 'tmp/bootcnt.tx

#1 Post by edoc »

My son's PC suddenly started stalling during boot on a "touch" error. This begins right
after an attempt to address some serial something or other ... continuous scrolling
makes it difficult to read.

Here is the first line:

"touch: cannot touch 'tmp/bootcnt.txt: Input/output error"

This is followed by several additional lines and just endless-loops at that point.

I guessed that the Puppy 2.00 install was corrupted so I booted from a Puppy 2.01 CD
and ran Puppy Universal Installer.

When rebooted the same error returns.

Help, please? Thanks! doc

It sounds to me like a problem with read/write privileges either to the /tmp folder or to bootcont.txt file. I'd boot from the CD and use the Rox filer to check access rights to the folder and the file (click the button on the toolbar to show the full details of the file and folder).

For the record, the error is occurring in /etc/profile script.
Immediately after the 'touch' line, /usr/X11R6/bin/xwin script is executed,
which starts X.

Is the advice that I have received from several folks to wait on 2.02 sound advice?

When should I plan to upgrade all three computers here and several being used by others to
2.02, please?

Time is tight so I'd rather upgrade to 2.02 than chase anomalies in 2.00

WDYT?

Thanks! doc
