Yesterday I set about installing Wary 5.2 to a USB stick as a full install using the Puppy Universal Installer.

The system installed and booted OK but recognised neither alsa sound nor the ETH0 interface.

Also would not execute an orderly shutdown or reboot from the menu. Power-off was not possible because the computer was locked into a continuous reboot loop.

I then reinstalled onto the stick in a similar fashion, but this time as a frugal install that uses a pup_save on the stick

Everything back to normal! - sound, ethernet as well as shutdown.

This seems to be some sortof legacy problem with installing Puppy Linux as a full installation. It seems to work sometimes and not others.

It can't be described as a show-stopper in any sense, but it would be nice if this got sorted out one of these days.

Please explain what you mean by "usb stick full install".
Puppy doesn't allow "full" installs to usb media.

@rjbrewer

What I meant by a full install to USB stick is having the linux image initrd and the pup_*.sfs etc. all installed to the root partition '/' of the USB stick. In the same partition resides a /root folder, but there is no pup_save loop-back device.

Any persistent changes also get saved to this top-level partition.

I wasn't aware that this is not supported.

My brother in London seems to have managed to do such installs to USB - has done for some time.

Whether it is actually fully functional though is another story. I think he mentioned that he was using Puppy 525 in this way. My test was done using this latest Wary 5.2

Wary 5.2 frugal install on Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop (Brookdale graphics) using i810 driver. Working well.

PupCamera recognized a Canon PowerShot A610 immediately and permitted viewing of photos. A usb reader using the camera's card also allowed viewing of photos.

Wary 514 boots reliably, but the two beta versions of this wary occasionally booted to a black screen with a small off-white square ~ 2cm on a side slightly off-center (sorry, wasn't able to report in a timely fashion). I have not noticed this behavior in 5.2, but will let you know.

glxgears gives about 340 FPS.

The difference between a frugal and full (normal Linux)
install on Puppy usb:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34263

I tried a usb install using the live cd with bootflash and
universal installer; both failed to find the iso.

Then used a previous Wary with the 5.2 iso file and it worked
fine.

PostPosted: Sun 16 Oct 2011, 15:28    Post subject: Xorg 7.6 working on PC with Intel video Chip Brookdale 82845

Hi Barry,
many thanks for this wary5.2 !
Summary:
Here maybe needed
- to add /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf and set value to 1
- to install an extra video-driver pet - i.e. xf86-video-intel-2.3.2-patched_lenny7-w5c.pet from wary pet repo - for running Xorg7.6 (whose pet is ...already...delivered with a «ton» of additional drivers...).
I am not sure if all this is right or wrong ? It howerver looks working
- frugal bootup in ca. 30 seconds Very Happy Very Happy

My "clunker" video description:
Code:
Chip description: 2.0 VGA compatible controller
Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
oem: Intel(r)845G/845GL/845GE/845GV Graphics Chip Accelerated VGA BIOS
product: Intel(r)845G/845GL/845GE/845GV Graphics Controller Hardware Version 0.0

Here is the whole story:

1. running the original Xorg 7.3.0
First live-cd boot-up on X.Org 7.3 worked OTB on vesa driver selecting <Probe> on xorgwizard;
afterwards re-ran xorgwizard to <Choose> Intel driver ---> also got OTB X desktop to run on intel driver.

2. Xorg 7.6.0 test
Then created a savefile; and got a try installing Xorg 7.6.0. Got X to crash if intel driver <Choosen> running xorgwizard.
X desktop only worked on vesa.
I noticed the file/etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf was not present.
So had to import it and settled it with value = 1.
Code:
options i915 modeset=1

I also added the xf86-video-intel-2.3.2-patched_lenny7-w5c.pet as I thought the intel-video driver version not matching with the Xorg 7.6 - Xorg.0.log indeed told «[ 1310.825] (EE) No devices detected.»
Got X to crash one more time !
Code:

comment: Xorg.0.log just after installed the Xorg7.6 upgrade pet and <Choose> the intel driver

So, that was yesterday; as X was crashed, I had to force the power switch off by keeping the power button on at least 4 seconds ...etc.

Now today, Xorg seems to work on intel driver!...without doing anything special.
Once my PC on, wary 5.2. opens on the very same savefile. I even thought it was starting with the vesa driver.
Then doing
Code:
report-video

tells that the intel driver is used !
Code:
Wary Puppy, version 5.2 on dim 16 oct 2011

Hope this could help.

I've tried printing from the K6 machine, which is actually working at the moment, on Wary 5.2. On both a pfix=ram and Frugal start I could print the test page from CUPS and an image from mtpaint but printing from both Abiword and Geany isn't working. The jobs are just sitting there in the queue and the status line says "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops failed".

My printer is a Canon BJC-70 and I'm printing to it via a Netgear PS110 print server using the lpd protocol. All other operating systems are printing fine, even Windows 98!

The Seamonkey update is nice and useful.

Don't have to see the youtube warning about 1.1.18 being
too old.

It will run the "Download Helper 4.9.5" which makes video
streams very easy to download.

Has lots of nice helper apps, including mms.

PostPosted: Mon 17 Oct 2011, 00:45    Post subject: Overscan of monitor screen

I have 22" Samsung widescreen monitor and
find that the desktop screen extends beyond the monitor
window frame.

This problem has been around with Wary for some time now.

I can change the setting of width and height in xorg with
xvidtune but after working thro' and requesting save setting
and then reboot these settings are not saved.

Why?

Thanks Tui

Thanks so much Jades. I was getting sick of being ignored over something so important and fundamental. This is a major showstopper for a final.

I installed the MESA video package as Barry suggested, bur made no difference to the FPS figure as reported by glxgears.

I'm getting about 700FPS with or without the MESA package so it's OK anyway.

Out of curiosity, I then tried the report-video program. This started up OK, but produced no output at all. I think I'll remove the MESA package and see if that makes any difference.
edit:
My mistake, report-video does work. Simply redirected the output to a file.

I have also tried installing the XORG 7.6 pet, but with no joy at all. X would not start up at all with this installed. Removed the package and everything went back to normal.

Video card is an ATI Radeon 3450.

Can confirm the over-extended screen problem as reported above by Tui.

PostPosted: Mon 17 Oct 2011, 08:12    Post subject: CUPS moves in mysterious ways it wonders to perform

I have the same printing problem as reported by DaveS and confirmed by others. After experimenting a bit, I found that certain ways of printing do work with my HP LaserJet 6P attached to a Windows server on my LAN.

I tried:
Code:
lpr -P <printer> test.txt
(where <printer> is the network name assigned to my printer).

And this worked. Since I know that foxit pdf reader uses this code to print, I tried to print from foxit - once again successfully.

Next stop was mtpaint because you can enter print commands in this program by hand. The preset was gtklp %f and this worked too.

Now to abiword. Here printing failed with a message that pdftops failed - although, as Barry reported, pdftops does in fact work. I tried the abiword printer preview, which turns the file into a pdf that is displayed with epdfview. This functioned correctly and I was able to print the file from the viewer!

Leafpad provided the same results - no direct printing, but printing possible via the printer preview. This workaround is not available with Geany because Geany does not have a preview function.

Finally, I checked printing from libreoffice 3.3.0.4 - which works.

So, it would appear that there is broken link somewhere, but it is difficult to find without knowing which chain of command the various programs use in order to print.

Running Racy Puppy 5.1.99 [ # echo $LANG de_DE@euro ]

I found , that printing via geany , epdfview , abiword does not work here [ , too ] .

Setting the print command from "native GTK printing" to "/usr/bin/lpr -p %f" in geany
[ -p for the header , still have to figure out how to print line numbers ]
works .

Geany does have a preview function ( 0.19.1 ) [ File > Print if native GTK printing is set ] .

Since there is trouble with Xdialog i suspect GTK version somehow .
Ghostscript is version 8.15 and recent lupu has got 8.71 . Missing files at /usr/share/ghostscript had been one cause for cups trouble here . Changing permissinos seems not to help until now ( /tmp /var /etc )
# chmod 0766 /etc/cups
# chmod 0777 /var
# chmod 0766 /var/cups
# chmod 0766 /var/spool
# chmod 0766 /var/tmp
# chmod 0766 /var/spool/cups
# chmod 0776 /var/spool/cups/tmp

and running "/etc/init.d/cups stop" and "/etc/init.d/cups start" changes permissions to [ some of ] the directories again to ^ no world access ^ .
