Xine has issues playing old VCDs. How to reinstall xine-lib?
I am running xine 0.99.5 on a 3.01 full HDD install.
When trying to play some old VCDs I find that some will at times and not others and one will not play at all.
I did a 'net search and found to do a:
#xine-check (which, in part gave the following)
[OUCH!!] There are no input plugins.
xine needs at least one input plugin, but none is installed.
You should probably reinstall xine-lib...
press <enter> to continue...
[OUCH!!] There are no demux plugins.
xine needs at least one demux plugin, but none is installed.
You should probably reinstall xine-lib...
press <enter> to continue...
[OUCH!!] There are no decoder plugins.
xine needs at least one decoder plugin, but none is installed.

[OUCH!!] There are no video_out plugins.
xine needs at least one video_out plugin, but none is installed.
You should probably reinstall xine-lib...
press <enter> to continue...
[OUCH!!] There are no audio_out plugins.
xine needs at least one audio_out plugin, but none is installed.
You should probably reinstall xine-lib...
press <enter> to continue...
I cannot remember how I did the initial install. What to do?
Edit: There was a mention that /.root/plugins was skipped because it was unreadable. That directory does not exist. What files should it contain?

Hi, Mercedes350se!
Try xine-lib-1.1.14-i486.pet at:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... 4-i486.pet
This makes my Xine 0.99.5 play VCD's on my Puppy 4.3.2 (based on 4.3.1) after installing ffmpeg. Do you have ffmpeg installed on your system?
One caveat, though. I checked VCD's, and they play beautifully; however, although this set up is supposed to be compatible with SVCD's, I have no way to test that....simply because I don't have and I can't find any SVCD, that is, a proper factory-pressed SVCD.
Please let me know if you were successful in working things out.
Cheers,
Carlos Albert

Thank you. As the subject description says ... . I have to select VCDO to make the three work but hey if it works ... .
Tried the fourth VCD but if I select VCD I am thrown right out of xine. If I select VCDO, like the other three I get a pop up which says:
_ xine engine error -
There is no demuxer plugin available to handle 'vcdo:/1'.
Usually this means that the format was not recognized.
As always any ideas?

In my haste to see if it worked I omitted to state in my previous post that when the pet was installed there was a message stating that:
libFLAC.so.8 was missing from /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.23/xineplug_flac
Would this be the problem?
Edit: DVDs play! Even one that has problems on a dedicated player.

As long as you're not tagging entries and merely playing vcd's, it won't have any bearing.
Search libflac* on your system and forward the output.
Then open a shell and run the following:
Any additional missing libs?

libflac* returned no files found. I have done a quick search of the 'net and it appears to be an audio codec so should have no effect.
The ldd /usr/bin/xine showed, in part, the following
libresolv.so.2 => /lib/libresolv.so.2 (0xb7b3e000)
libnsl.so.1 => /lib/libnsl.so.1 (0xb7b27000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7f6c000)
libexpat.so.1 => /usr/lib/libexpat.so.1 (0xb7b07000)
libxcb-xlib.so.0 => /usr/lib/libxcb-xlib.so.0 (0xb7b05000)
otherwise everything was found.

Mercedes350se, the only way to play standard VCD's is by pressing the VCDO button on Xine. I believe that the VCD button is only to play SVCD's, or even perhaps CDi VCD's, but not standard VCD's. Yes, I know, it is confusing, but we have to take into account that CDi VCD's were the first type of digital video on compact disc. I think I have a CDi VCD somewhere here inside one of the dozens big plastic boxes my disc collection is storaged in, but it would take me hours and hours to find it, so I cannot test it right now and confirm what I am telling you. Likewise, as I said before, I don't have a SVCD to test it on Xine.
As for your fourth VCD that doesn't play on Xine, are you talking about a proper factory-pressed VCD or a custom-made burned VCD? Did you try it with a different player or a different computer or even with a different operating system like Windows? I am telling you all of this because it could be the case that there is something wrong with your fourth VCD and not necessarily with Xine.
Libflac is used to play flac audio, but VCD's (all types) and DVD's don't use flac audio. Of course, you can create a VCD or DVD using flac audio, but it won't be standard, and I am not sure if it would be playable on Xine.
In closing, I concur with Semme, so if "both dvd's and vcd's play- your objective has been achieved, yes?", but keep us informed about your fourth VCD just in case.

Mercedes350se, if your fourth VCD is, for instance, an Asian bootleg, even if factory-pressed, it could have been recorded with non-standard parameters. The fact that it plays on your standalone VCD player could even corroborates that fact that it is non-standard, for Asian-made dedicated standalone players are known to play some non-standard discs, though most of the time they don't say which non-standard discs the player is compatible with, so it is a matter of trial and error.
Cheers,

P.S.: There are some softwares that can find out for you if a disc is within standard parameters or not.
