For those who don't know, I have developed an equivalent to "first run", named Quick Setup. This replaces the text-mode dialog boxes, such as choosing keyboard layout, at first boot.

It has evolved a bit since then. For anyone interested in trying Quick Setup, right now I am uploading Racy 5.1.110 which has it.

The 'quicksetup' script is attached, however don't put it into your Puppy and expect it to work properly, as it requires other changes (such as a modified /usr/sbin/delayedrun). The purpose of the attachment is for translations.

The attached 'quicksetup' is actually slightly later than the one in Racy 5.1.110, as I tweaked a couple of the text strings a tiny bit.

The script is internationalised, just needs some guys to do translations!

Also attached is quicksetup.pupdev, which has the instructions for creating a language translation file.

Anyone who would like to see this working in your language is invited to contribute!

Note, I'll announce Racy 5.1.110 (5.2 beta2) as soon as it has finished uploading. Going a bit slow, a couple of hours away.

since this is your thread, I suppose you will revisit it from time to time and get to read my comment.

I have read L18L's translation into German. It is fine, but since I have done some translations for other Puppy's (Akita, Slacko) I couldn't help but notice the differences. And that brings me to the point of this post:

A translation from well established English terms and phrases into any language will largely be the handy work of the translator. Translator A will - necessarily - translate a little bit different than translator B. Take two Puppys and two translators and you will get two different versions.
Now, that may be negligable for amateurs. But are we, as the Puppy community, still a bunch of amateurs or do we strive for excellence?

If so, then the most important goal in translating would be consistency, by which I mean that one English term is translated into one and only one foreign term (per language).
E.g. "keyboard layout" could be translated into German as "Tastatur Layout" (if you like 'Denglish') or "Tastaturbelegung" (if you think that that would be a widely used term) or "Tastaturauslegung" (if you are translating literally).
Other terms and other languages have the same wide spread possibilities. It even gets worse when entire sentences rather than terms are to be translated.

Are we really content with menus, pop-up windows and messages to be different from Puppy to Puppy? Or do we want to standardise translations?

In case we want to come to a more professional approach, I'd suggest and present for discussion a

Puppy Translation Wiki

As part of this forum it could be a place where developers present English terms, phrases, sentences, paragraphs for translation into various languages.
After translation by native speaking forum members and check and balance by other members, the translations could be used by all developers in their respective Puppy files for some uniform consistent translation.

Just as a thought and a suggestion for the improvement of Puppy appearence.

Thank you and others. I suggest we build a website dedicated for all the translation and localization files of Puppy, or use some sites like launchpad.net to achieve this goal since launchpad has a function that we can translate strings using translations suggested by others.

I have made Russian po-file for Quick Setup.
I noticed that connectwizard and hostname-set are also gettexted so I have made po files for these as well.
