puppy201_xfce.iso project
Hmmm. I've tried the remaster script (several times!), but keep coming up with a problem that must be a bug. No matter what I do, the wrong .xinitrc gets put onto the new image. When it gives the chance to change the contents of /tmp/root, I correct the file, but it never makes it to the final CD. I would love to have it but all my attempts at installing XFCE4 have failed miserably.
Anyway, it doesn't look like I would have permission to post there. It probably takes an admin to do that. Anybody with more privileges care to comment on whether we need another 70 MB, just to get xfce added (assuming I get the bug worked out!)?

Yes there is interest and hosting available (can anyone find the hosting link from one of our German Puppys?)
This is about SimplePup - there is also an XDG menu in development or partially available from Rarsa

the creature . . . is alive . . .
Downloaded, ISO checked, running it now.
It is nice! Xfce - yes indeedee . . .
The window redrawing seems much smoother.
If you can document or at least tell us what you did that would be great.
If you do a second ISO, which I hope you will, use a puppy background (easy) and link to a Puppy site - also easy.
for example the developing Community site (which can also be hosted internally/ offline)
http://tmxxine.com/ce/
There might also be XDG menus (that might be trickier - not sure).
OK gonna try running jwm - so gotta finish without screen shots.
You did good! Many thanks.
Did you announce it on wiki news?

OK. Let's see if I can answer the last couple of posts.

The iso project started at Artie's request. It was, for the most part, using the remasterpup2 script, which is found on the menu as "Setup | Remaster Puppy Live CD, Simple." The interesting--and frustrating--part was an apparant bug that caused the modified .xinitrc file not to be copied to the remastered CD image. See http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=9090 for the resolution of that issue.
Link to a Puppy site--I assume you're talking about the dillo page that automatically opens in the standard version. I don't know where that instruction is given, so I simply ignored it. Putting it in would definitely be a good thing for first-time Puppy users.
XDG menus--Not exactly sure, here. Is that the system that creates menus based on what *.desktop files are in a particular directory?
Likelihood of creating another iso in the next 2 weeks: ZERO! Heading out on a family vacation, so the puppy may get lonely. I'll see how the community edition is coming when I get back. The way it's looking, the next CE version will make creating custom versions very easy. If there's a bunch of XFCE iso's floating around come August, I probably won't do another.
On the other hand, I am willing to help out with XFCE, and perhaps XDG, in Meaty when I return.
The original project was to install XFCE to Puppy 2. That is documented in this HOWTO:If you can document or at least tell us what you did that would be great.

I thought about the background, but as the objective was XFCE, I figured I"d make it a complete experience. For another version, I'll definitely replace the wallpaper, and probably the menu button. As much as I love XFCE, I don't particularly like the mouse logo.If you do a second ISO, which I hope you will, use a puppy background (easy) and link to a Puppy site - also easy.

Hmmm. Don't know how to do that. I assume you mean here - http://puppylinux.org/wikka/LatestNews - ? I guess I'd have to create an account, etc. Have to to that post-vac.Did you announce it on wiki news?
Looks like a moderator already took care of that, as well as splitting it off into its own thread . . .How about renaming this thread puppy201_xfce.iso
I'm testing it out and playing with it. Here are some first impressions:
1. The clock in the lower right corner says for example 17:17 instead of 5:17 PM and as I am in Norway that's much better for me. I never could figure out how to change that in 1.09CE.
2. I tried installing Firefox and Opera and was a bit confused before I figured out that the exe files ended up in usr/local.
I'll come up with more later. Thanks!

Different
It looks different from Win (which is the first reason people want to change the JWM default in Puppy), but a little slower in my Celeron 400.
Maybe the "Start" button of JWM can just be placed somewhere else (like in the middle or at the right end), and labelled "Arf" or something else, and that will make it a lot different from Win.

You can have you own thread at puppylinux.net
If you wish an upload account, webpages, a forum thread to support your custom iso, additional hosting of you iso will be at puptrix.org if volume is an issue.
