Racy Puppy 5.2.1.91 (5.2.2 RC -- 10 Nov. 2011)

#301 Post by Billtoo »

Manual frugal install to gateway desktop pc.

Racy Puppy, version 5.2.1.91 on Mon 14 Nov 2011

Chip description:

nVidia Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 430] (rev a1)
oem: NVIDIA
product: GF108 Board - 1071v1p1 Chip Rev

X Server: Xorg
Driver used: nvidia

X.Org version: 1.11.0
dimensions: 1440x900 pixels (373x231 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

# glxgears
59366 frames in 5.0 seconds = 11873.066 FPS
59474 frames in 5.0 seconds = 11894.719 FPS
59483 frames in 5.0 seconds = 11896.526 FPS

Computer
Processor 4x AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 810 Processor
Memory 8312MB (98MB used)
OpenGL
Vendor NVIDIA Corporation
Renderer GeForce GT 430/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
Version 4.2.0 NVIDIA 285.05.09
Direct Rendering Yes

So far everything is working perfectly, pets and sfs files created in
recent racy versions work.
Will keep testing.
I used Psync time server synchroniser to set the clock to standard
time, the clock was one hour fast because we are no longer on daylight
saving time.

Edit:
I've installed racy 52191 on two computers and I am having the same problem on both, that is that web pages are really slow to load completely. The page will load partially then take a minute or more to finish loading.
I booted racy of oct27 on another pc and web pages loaded quickly as they usually do.

Edit:
I think the problem with web pages loading was because I installed a
seamonkey 2.4.1 pet that I made a while ago in an early version of
wary.It works fine in the oct 27th racy but not the new one.
I deleted the save file of my second racy 5.2.1.91 install and
rebooted and went through setup, save file creation, etc, but this time
I went with the seamonkey 2.3.1 that racy comes with and web pages are loading normally.
Racy 5.2.1.91 didn't like my seamonkey 2.4.1 pet for some reason.

@broomdodger
The flash plugin didn't download for me either, I installed the
plugin as I had downloaded it yesterday from the adobe site and saved it
to a flash drive.

Edit: It wasn't a problem with the seamonkey 2.4.1 pet, I removed the flash plugin and web pages load normally.

I am seeing the same slow loading of web pages. Racy5.2.1.91 IBM ThinkPad x30

@ Billtoo - Did you install flash? If yes, did you check Seamonkey plugins to see if it was active?

Also when first connect to internet, Flash ask to install.
It did download Flash but gave an error that the download did not complete.

I looked and the file was in /usr/lib/mozilla but did not uncompress and install. I manually installed it but pages loaded so slow, I thought Flash was the problem so removed it.

I will check tomorrow to see how pages load without flash.

Adobe recently announced that Flash is dead.
Not soon enough for me.

I haven't tried Racy yet but noticed the same problem in the new Wary 5.2.1.91 as well.
EDIT:
I had upgraded to SeaMonkey 2.4.1 as well......I'll revert back and see if there is a difference.

Racy 5.2.1.91 live multi-session dvd.Sound and internet good on boot.....had to use xorgwizard with nouveau driver to get the desired 1366x768 resolution.
No apparent problems with pages loading in the installed SeaMonkey 2.3.1.

Good news and good news. Everything that caused problems in 5.2.1.90 now appear to work ie mouse, long menus, sound, etc - haven't checked printers yet.
Even better SM seizes up fairly easily, particularly when resizing window. Perhaps we can dump this appalling item now?! Opera 11.6beta working utterly reliably - of course.

Whoa - spoke too soon. Mouse slows to a crawl when running iPlayer. Horizontal movement eventually failed completely during video playing.

What do we do next? (Flash)

#308 Post by broomdodger »

@sage "What do we do next?"

1) Adobe has discontinued Flash development for mobile, it is about time to say goodbye to Flash on any platform and find a browser that supports HTML5.

--OR-- if you really NEED Flash

2) Edit the delayedrun script, delete /var/local/internetsuccess and reboot. You will be asked to install Flash and it should now download and install.

--BUT--

Then you will most likely experience the slow/hanging for 30-90 seconds on sites that have Flash.

-Bill

Edit /usr/sbin/delayedrun

Find and replace lines 252 and 275:
tar -zxf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz

[ -f install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz ] && rm -f install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz

With:
tar -zxf install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz

[ -f install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz ] && rm -f install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz

Delete:
/var/local/internetsuccess

Reboot and you will again :( be asked to download Flash, good luck :P

If you get that bloated sluggish feeling, disable flash by deleting or renaming:
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

it is about time to say goodbye to Flash
...are you forgetting the tryst we suffered/suffer between Blair and Gates? The first admitted he didn't know how to switch on a PC, the latter you already have the full SP.
Perhaps you could write to the BBC and threaten not to listen to the World Service until they convert all their PCs to Linux. Notwithstanding, they are quick enough with the product placements of 'Banana(?)' machines when they want to show how much of taxpayers funds they are squandering. Not to worry, just lie back and enjoy Dancing with the... We get all the royalties worldwide -it's a Beeb copyright.

As for your No.2, jiggling with the files is not my forte. I'll have to await the maestro's return.

Even worse for me - I have to replace the newer b43 firmware in racy5.2.1.91 with the b43 firmware from wary5.2 plus manually modprobe the b43 module to get my wifi to work...

but Barry has said
BarryK wrote:Well, there isn't anything that we can do. The only thing left is to complain to the b43 developers. It is not good, but it looks like I will have to put into the release notes that if you require the b43 kernel driver, then you will have to put "modprobe b43" into /etc/rc.d/rc.local, or add it to the modules list in BootManager.
Cheers

my 2 cents on the testing...

#314 Post by atv »

Greetings to all:
I'm new as you can tell. I recall a meeting back in '68, at the mill, where I believe the young engineer who made the presentation to K. O.'s staff, made a case for practically giving away the OS and he claimed, the Hardware would sell like pop corn. well, Most of us today now know that MS is the largest Manufacturer of windows software, but they seem to have forgotten their roots, and it's software is somewhat overpriced. Puppy Linux seems to be in the right track to become THE OS OF CHOICE. Great Job, congratulations to all that have participated in a small or large way and contributed to this effort. I certainly have enjoyed trying this puppy out.

Having said that, some of my initial observations are as follows: I'm located in Ecuador, South America and the Country and language default compared to puppy 528 is as follows: Day is -1 day from correct day. Time clock is +1 hour from correct time.
Now when I set it to my correct time zone it works properly.

after clicking on browse and navigating through Lobsters presentation, (real nice I may add) at page 6b. I clicked on install missing plugins, then a window showed up stating no suitable plugins were found. Unknown...(flash) I clicked on manual install. It took me to adobe.com .../flashplayer ... found the downloads tab, then found the get adobe flashplayer tab...that...scrolled down to...select version to download...
The other path (Find out more...)took me to mozilla.org .../plugincheck...Missing flash... It stated that: for my safety, firefox disabled it...upgrade to...latest...that took me back to...scrolled down to...select version to download... Then it gave me 4 choices:
YUM for Linux (YUM)
.tar.gz for other Linux
.rpm for other Linux
APT FOR Ubuntu 10.04+

My question is: which one is recommended?

Another thing I noticed, is that when I download (whatever) I normally would like to open it with the default opener for that item... it nicely asks Choose... when i click it... I don´t know what to do next, as it opens to my-documents folder and there are no choices in there (totally empty) to open with...

I will continue checking this system out...

PS. about 1.5 hour later, a popup just showed up saying ...install... Flashplayer...It installed like a charm. :)

Thanking you in advance,
Andy

trying find out what distro is compatible with racy?

looking in "DISTRO_COMPAT_VERSION is defined in this file:

/etc/DISTRO_SPECS" show "puppy" then farther down mentions wary.

slacko is in the ppm so can use other slack repos? thanks

---------

see now slacko was just used as an example in the add repo help.

still not sure what repos can use to add pets?

Manual frugal install to acer netbook.
Everything worked properly on first boot, I used SNS to setup the
