Puppy 1.* |
|
what is the opinion of the community?
does the concept of Puppy 1. (Puppy fitting on a check card sized CD) be to old now?
what are the chances to build a Puppy with T2 and Woof being fittable on such a mini-CD for the pocket?
can Puppy 1. still be improved?

I use mini DVDs (1.4 GB + RW) which fit easily in my shirt or other pockets.
My regards
Flash gave me that tip though I think he used scratch resistant - RW DVDs.

A lot of people are booting from USB, when needing the portable option
I boot from DVD and have one mini RW-DVD somewhere
SD is also useful
Puppy = choice

I've been using the Sony 8 cm scratch resistant mini DVD-RWs that were made for camcorders. They are absolutely perfect for multisession Puppy. Recently my local Fry's electronics sold scratch-resistant printable mini-DVD-Rs for $.05 each to get rid of them. I bought all they had, about 40 of them. I'm running Racy Puppy from one now.
I believe mini (8 cm) CDs hold 200 MB, which is enough for any standard Puppy, even for a multisession Puppy if all you're going to save on the CD is Puppy's configuration and settings.
Surely someone will come out with a mini Blu-Ray disk. A regular-size DVD holds 4.7 GB while a mini-DVD holds 1.4 GB. A regular Blu-Ray disk holds 25 GB. If the ratio holds true, a mini-BD should hold around 7.4 GB. Not that multisession Puppy would ever use it all.

I want to see you use one of those mini DVD-rw disks in a slot type of DVD drive.
Just kidding there.
But I have had DVD drive trays with a slotted type tray not work well with the mini's If I was not careful they would end up on the floor or jam the tray from closing.
But whatever works for you.
Picture this though.
Set up Puppy for a specific PC with all apps and then create an eeprom of it.
You would have Puppy on an electrically erasable prom chip that could be then used to make a true thin client type of PC.

I confess that I've never tried to put a mini CD in one of the drives that has a slot which sucks in the disk. I figured I would just jam it up and have to pay for an expensive repair.

Nice idea in principle but you would be hard pressed to find an eeprom with
enough capacity to hold even the most trimmed down of Puppies.
Dave.
EDIT:
Taking your idea one step further, would it not be possible to boot
Puppy off a USB flash disk with the file system set to "READ ONLY"?
Kinda like a emulating a giant eeprom.

For what it's worth, I always have a USB drive with a Puppy on it wherever I go. Usually I carry Wary with me, since I sometimes am forced to use less than up-to-date hardware when out and about, but it keeps something at least familiar with me, and on one occasion allowed me to enter and use a system circumventing the login of the network. (I didn't do anything nefarious, btw.)
I also keep a Lupu 528 on USB at home, and I play with this without fear of breaking the Slacko on the HD, and then my wife is happy because she can always use the computer when one of my little 'experiments' has rendered my USB based system unusable.
I loves me a flash drive, I do. Loves a flash drive, yup.
