Subject description: A crossstitch program for many puppies

I have found a crossstitch program with a built in tutorial that steps one through creating a pattern from scratch or from a graphic file with many supported.
It gives you warnings about loss of data even after saving such, but it works nice and I was able to create a 12 page PDF file that shows the original picture, the picture with a grid, DMC thread colors needed, and a graphical diagram with codes for each color.

It is an Open Source Program written for linux. I did not lokk for the C source code though.

I think you will like it and it can be downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/projects/cstitch/files/latest/download?source=files.

This is posted in the Users Section only because I could not figure out what section of Additional software it should be in and also because the file is accessed through a link.

Have fun and think of using a sweatshirt or piece of clothing with the puppy logo used for the pattern.

You've linked to the automatic download of the icons archive. Smile
(Apparently, it's the most recent archive uploaded, so Sourceforge's servers think it's the latest version of the program. Rolling Eyes )

The project page can be found here: http://cstitch.sourceforge.net (http://sourceforge.net/projects/cstitch/)
The binaries (for the current version) are here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cstitch/files/Cstitch/. Not sure about the sources, yet.

Makoto, the link is right. When you extract the archive you will have a folder named cstitch_0.9.3. In the folder there are two files: cstitch (executable) and Readme-linux (txt file).
Click on the executable and the program will start.

8-bit's link gave me 'icons.zip,' a 43k file containing nothing but .png files. Note that at the top of the directory listing I linked to (http://sourceforge.net/projects/cstitch/files/Cstitch/) it says, "Looking for the latest version? Download icons.zip (43.4 kB)" - and that's what http://sourceforge.net/projects/cstitch/ is offering as its primary download.

cstitch_0.9.3_linux32.tar.gz, in the directory listing, however, is 6.2MB, and the version that should probably be downloaded first, then the icons. Smile

OK, now I see your point Smile
But when I click on the link from the first post I get direct download of the archive with the program after five seconds. So I didn't notice that the icons archive is on the top of the list.
Cheers

I also tried the link I posted and I also got the download of the file in a very short time.
When you clicked on the other link that was displayed, you got redirected to the download for the latest icons.

I have run the program without installing it as it is extracted to a directory of the same name and you just click on the binary file to run it.
Also, if you do a little searching, you can find the C source code to it.
I tried it with a small jpg file and also with one from my camera of my dog.
The one from my dog, if done to where it would look really good showed a height for the finished work of 84 inches. So stick with downsized pictures.
A small jpg of a penguin wearing a santa hat ended up as a 12 page PDF.
The PDF contained the original picture, a grid picture, the color chart and codes for the DMC colors used, and the coded grid pages that made up the instructions that were big enough for one with poor eyesight to see. That is why it was 12 pages.
It was also nice to have the onscreen guide that took me through the 4 steps in creating the cross stitch pattern.

I always get icons.zip when I try the link you posted in the first post (tried it again, just now). I didn't click any other link, on any of the attempts.

I'll try it from a different computer, but the directory listings do seem to think icons.zip is the archive with the latest version - so technically, you'd expect that to be the file the automatic download serves. Neutral

Edit: Okay, I see what the problem is. Sourceforge's servers also attempt to give you the correct version for the OS you're using, in this case. So, because I was posting from my Mac for most of the posts in this topic, it decided I should be getting icons.zip. Rolling Eyes My Windows system receives the Windows version, and my Linux system the... well, the Linux version.

So, it's part user error, and part SF server quirk. Embarassed (In that SF's servers were serving icons.zip... it's probably because it's one of the most recent uploads that the servers default to pushing it if it doesn't know what to do for a particular OS. Or something like that.)

So does that mean that when using Puppy to get cstitch you actually get it?
If you did not, I could always upload it to a flle sharing site.

But if you indeed have got it, I would like to know what you think of the program.
I have not used the KDE one that saintless supplied since tt seems to be limited
to just some versions of Puppy.
One of these days, I am going to see if I can try doing some cross stitch myself.
I got the package for my wife and daughter.
Before, when I was looking for a cross stich creation program and running Windows,
the only ones I could find were commercial or something that you had to upload
your picture to and then pay for a download of the finished pattern.

I was able to download it correctly on my Puppy system (but the automatic download problem aside, I could still visit the directory and download the correct files that way), but haven't tried it.

Yeah, most of the programs I usually see of this nature are shareware/commercial. I've been keeping an eye on them for my sister, who mostly does knitting/crocheting, but has always wanted a picture>cross-stitch program. Smile
