Sub_title: devoloping a puppy for arm processors

i got a nokia n810 and man is this thing powerful. my only problem is that the maemo operating system is total junk. the debian based system is far too large and this makes the computer run too slow. I think that there is a big future for puppy, if somebody cares to develop the software, in the arm, mips, and risc processors. Basically these are the processors that run the telephone and nokia internet tablet devices. I wish to god that somebody would develop a puppy for the nokia n810 so that i could get rid of the ridiculous maemo system on here.

the debian on it works, but it is for a system with 5 times more memory and a processor that's twice as fast as the arm that's on there now. these little computers are the future and somebody should recognize this at puppy. if debian can develop this why can't puppy?

I am a very proud owner of the Pocket PC Phone XPERIA from Sony Erricsson.
It is one of the best Pocket PC Phones that are available at the market today.

I am planning in the next 12 Month to start porting Puppy Linux to the arm architecture. If you and others have ineresst also for this project please write here.
Porting Puppy Linux to arm isnt a big work.
The big Problem is developing the needed Drivers for the Devices.

Interesting, any progress? There are more and more ARM based netbooks around. They are very powerefficient and pretty cheap.
I have ordered a smartq7. It has Ubuntu installed, but it seems to be a little sluggish. WinCE is a lot faster, so I might buy that. Ofcourse I'd rather run linux.
I think Puppy would be great on these devices.

if you are really serious about porting to arm I would recommend:

1. selectively merge the debian and barry's kernel config and patches and recompile
2. download woof and do a dpup build using the arm .deb packages (will require editing the url to point to arm vs. x86)

Hello technosaurus.

Thank you a lot for your advice.

I have already tryed to create with Woof a Puppy for the armel architecture.

The Thing is that Puppy is first builded mainly around the x86 architekture like CDRom Bootscrpts that access Cdrom Binarys, a lot of self created and compiled Programms and simmilar things that normally dont exist on armel devices like mobile Phones .

Second. A lot of Programms has to be Crosscompiled and Patched for the armel architekture too.

Becouse of this Tasks and the big Effort as it is not a very easy Undertaken i have decided to go some other way than using the woof build and the debian/ubuntu packages.

I am at the moment more working toward a Opie and a GPE Desktop system than a Puppy Distro however some other Projects have a bigger Priority becouse of the big time consumption of the Project.

I would say that in the next 5 Years for sure Armel has good chances to Increase his Marketshare and Power as it is very strong in the Mobile World ecpecially the Pocket PC World.

On the other Side Intel Processors like Atom has advantages when it comes to Netbooks where the Mobility and the Batterylife is not such a big Problem compared to Mobile Phones or Pocket PC Phones.

@ARAN
FWIW, Puppy's architecture is actually mostly lighter than GPE

You may as well use uclibc (vs. glibc) => you can use existing (angstrom, leaf)
or a build system (buildroot, t2, scratchbox, openembedded, ...)

yes, most arm devices don't have or need a cdrom...
That's OK, puppy doesn't _need_ a CD-ROM
(I haven't burned a puppy iso since early in the 2.x series)

focus on usb/compact flash/full install instead ...

you can try bootstrapping with a manual frugal install
(you may need to adapt the grub menu.lst to match up
with an arm boot loader - uboot/barebox/redboot etc..)
If you have a device with an existing bootloader,
I would use that to start. (examples can be a big help)

Dude!
I know this is 3 years old, but I have a N800(same thing, but without GPS/keyboard) and the Maemo OS is actually pretty bad ass if you take some time to customize it. You have to update the firmware to get the processor to go up from 330Mhz to the 400 it's capable of. That's the biggest reason it's slow.

They have a community update for Diablo, that fixes some bugs and enhances responsiveness. Telescope should be installed to make it respond faster when switching windows. ASUI lets you control BT, wifi, and processor speed.

I really think it rocks for having paid only $50 for it on ebay.
