Brainwave puppy repo will be closing Sub_title: repo will close indefinitely due to financial and time restraints |
|
Hello All...
I have some very sad news to deliver to you folks Today,
I regret to Inform you all that on the 16th of this month(December16,2011) ,
The Popular and widely used puppy linux repository will be closing it's doors and winding down operations on the above stated date, due to lack of funds, lack of time( mother on chemotherapy/ radiation , due to stage 3 cancer)
So, Unless some of you folks want to make a monetary contribution towards keeping this neat mirror alive, It will simply fade away, into history as the 2nd most popular(puppylinux.ca being the First) /widely used puppy repository in the elegant distribution's history
I will also require that some one(maybe a collaborative Team?)
take over the daily Administrative Tasks(General maintenance, upkeep, i.e. making sure there are no broken files, links)
To work on the mirror to keep it in good health
That is all
Sorry folks, But my hands are tied here and my sweet mother's life is at stake...
There is absolutely nothing I can do except make this post as courtesy to all puppians
Have a good day
And Merry Christmas /Happy new year!

This is indeed sad news, since I really love your repo. Hopefully things will work out for you in the future.
If I remember correctly, there are some packages in your repo that are unique. Is there any plan to migrate them?

That's sad to hear. Hope your mother recovers soon.
Would you care to post some hosting info, like the plan/cost and the hosting company? Or PM it to me.

Sad indeed, however totally understandable that you deal with your Mum's needs first
Good Luck with that, and keep your chin up - it can be hard
Love, comfort and resilience are about the best you can give her now....
It is sad also that Chemo is still being given to stage 3 patients, though you probably don't want to consider alternates at this late time
Thanks for Brainwave, hope it finds support

Having had to go through what you are now having to face back in the early 90's, you have my deepest simpathy! Work it one day at a time and don't bottle things up is all I can say.
However, as far as the brainwave site is concerned if you care to post (or via a pm) a url and what you consider the most important to keep, I can download and store and make available some 4gig or so of file space on my site, so it doesn't totally dissapear (I have the space for more, just not the transfer speed bandwidth). Maybe if enough of us grab bits we can archive it all!
regards
scsijon

Thanks for being such a gracious host, Saturn.
I wish you and your mother the best, and hope that she does well.
Now, as for the site:
| Quote: | | making sure there are no broken files |
Wolf's Adobe Flash/Flash .pets would be a good place to start.
After installation and an about:plugins check, they don't show up (at least not on this box).
On the other hand, Mike's Flash .pets check out OK.
(Note: I haven't tested all of them.)
Also, Wolf's java-1.6u17.pet is missing libjvm.so

That's sucky news all around. Seems like cancer touches everyone's lives at some point.
Using pmirrorget to grab the site now. How much stuff is in there anyway?
Edit: I grabbed 46gig and ran out of room. How much more?

I'm very sorry to read that, Saturn,
wish you and your mother all the luck in the world!
I will help with the financial part as much as I can afford.
It will be good to know some details about how much money will be needed every year. I'm sure many people will help.
Let's hope someone will have the time and skills to maintain the repo as well.
Is this the link for donations?:

To answer some questions the repo is currently around 70 something odd GB and rounds out to about 60GB minimum and about 200GB Maximum in bandwidth transfers monthly
The reason for the huge Data Transfers is mainly due in part to Big Mike's enthusiastic and rather wild advertising of the repository, Without him , It would have been maybe just another puppy file mirror
Also wolf_pup was the co-admin while he was still active in the puppy linux community, but left disgruntled, because of an event known as the "Great puppian cleansing" of the IRC chatroom on freenode which happened about two-three years ago, during the american summer season,
Where the channel's founder,Cricket,(T260G) and possibly J-rey had to step-in and "re-organize" the room
Wolf_pup(Jesse Martinez of del-rio, Texas, USA) is therefore no longer active in the community
Saintless, If you and Raffy could pull together around 189 USD for the upcoming years hosting, that would about cover it
And, No, puppylinux.ca is not for donations for my site
for me to receive it, you would have to send it to my email address which I will PM to you
This Will cover one year of hosting til December 16th,2012
And the price of 189 USD will also include a one year domain renewal
Tubeguy,
The repository is around about 60-70 GB
Please feel free to ask whatever other questions you have about brainwave
Thank you all for your support!
Have a good day!

Update on repo issue |
|
I have emailed a person in the "host's for large files" that was offering hosting like me,(had a similar hosting plan, unlimited storage and bandwidth) who was mostly largely ignored... for whatever reason
His user name is "silverpuppy" and is the 7th post down on this thread:
| SilverPuppy wrote: | | I've been trying to get people's attention about the repository I'm attempting to fill. Nobody seems to be awake. I pay a premium for my hosting to get unlimited bandwidth and unlimited storage. Email me at business at silverdollarsolutions dot com and I'll give you your own FTP login and directory in http://www.silverdollarsolutions.com/PuppyLinux |
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=3778&start=60
Hopefully he will be of help, and of consideration to move the repo, over without anyone having to dole out any money
But I will lose my Top listing in google for "Puppy Linux Repository"
Due to the DNS change if he is willing to help...
That was quite an accomplishment, All Thanks to Big Mike
But it would be rather meaningless if the repo dies, as I can allways have the ranking re-established, but then again that's just my pride speaking,...
As, we all working in the best interests of puppy Together, AS A TEAM!
SYNERGY FTW!

Sad news on both counts.. |
|
Saturn, i'm truly sorry to read of the bad news, especially your mum....one of my younger sisters is travelling that same hard road and it seems that all we, as family, can do is be with them and around them as cheerfully as we can and try to help keep their fighting spirits in good shape. I hope your mother can beat this beast and enjoy more of life. And take care of yourself as well..
@ any members: I'm happy to help host some brainwave files, so PM me for an account to upload them, if you have the bandwidth/speed/time to grab them....unfortunately, i don't have the time at present to take care of it.
Saturn, i wish you, your mother and your family all the best.

12:58 am till 8:19 am= 7 hrs 21 minutes for 46G <mouth drops on floor>.
BK was wanting to splash cash a while back. gently nudge it in his direction.
my uploads to russoodles site go at about 15K/s so how long would 46G or even 70G take much faster to snail mail a harddrive.
just for interests sake are we getting anywhere near torrents or clouds

was just waiting for a sponsor to speak up
But thanks, aarf
your efforts are highly valued, and appreciated!
