Customized Versions of Lucid Subject description: Remastered ISO's |
|
The Remastering capability of Lucid 5.2.8 Version 004 is working very nicely (thanks mainly to rerwin). Remastering allows users to easily create a Puppy ISO that is customized to their liking by adding programs to the original ISO. The programs that are installed at the time of remastering become part of the new customized ISO and are loaded into memory and don't take up any room in a save file. The customized ISO's can be shared with others.
This thread will provide information on remastering as well as links and information on remastered versions of Lucid.
Remastering (the way playdayz does it):.
1. Please use Lucid 5.2.8 Version 004. You will need a CD with Lucid 528.004.
2. Download the pets you want to use and save them to /mnt/home or someplace that will be available when booting pfix=ram.
3. Boot with pfix=ram so no save file is loaded.
4. Install the pets you want (don't start the new programs so that no big cache files, etc., are created that could take up space on the remaster). After installing the pets restart the X server in order to reset some flags (Menu -> Shutdown -> Restart X Server)
5. Choose Menu -> Setup -> Remaster Puppy live-CD
6. Choose to build the new ISO on a disk with at least 500MB free and a Linux filesystem..
7. Choose *not* to change the /root and /etc directories (this is so that the remastered ISO will work for everyone--if you are making a customized version for your own use only you can change the /root and /etc directories)
8. Choose No to burn the new iso to disk, but choose Yes to create the new iso. The result of remastering will be "custom-puppy.iso." Rename that to something more descriptive, such as lupu-528.004-plus-Iron. You can burn that iso to CD for your own use if necessary with Pburn--that's what people will do who download the iso.
9. Upload the new iso to a server and post a message in this thread with info on the remaster and a link to the iso. You might also want to post a message in the Puppy Derivatives thread

Hi, I'm not sure if I am looking in the right place but I can only find the 5.25 version available for download. Is 5.28 available anywhere?

After reading further in the thread there were evidently problems and that one was pulled.

Thanks for a great post which will no doubt benefit everyone.
You may however wish to clarify the format of the disk.

JFYI - running Lupu528-004.alt.iso now on my 10yr old laptop
and it is great.
Very impressed with Iron and Dillo combination.
Many thanks indeed for this updated masterpiece - much appreciated.

Thanks for this thread.
Small bug in "Remove Buildin packages" when you remove "homebank", the help menu entry stays.

Playdayz thank you for this information. Personally, I do not use the 'remastering', I prefer to touch up 'by hand' the sfs to be sure not to add unnecessary files.
However, I advise the 'new user' to use the remastering because it is a friendly and efficient way, so I'll add a link to this discussion in the French forum of our association.
Thank you again for playdayz and other contributors for the excellent Lucid Puppy!
Best regards.

I was bored so I started a new little project with Lucid 528.004. Not a remaster....I change everything manually. Not happy yet...need to remove a bit more excess baggage.
No JWM. No Openbox.Removed. Boots straight into an XFCE4 desktop with Conky.
Still got a little tweaking to do but I'm posting from it live pfix=ram now. More soon.

Would that be the Homebank Help menu entry? Yes, that was added separately. You can delete it from /usr/share/applications and then run fixmenus in a console.

I've made my own custom version, but the icons and themes I set weren't as default, although they were there. I had also installed wbar. The bar appeared at the top, but the usual desktop icons in a standard Puppy ISO were still there. Any tips?

To set your icons as default you can be edited in the file /etc/desktop_icon_theme.
The icons of the default icon theme that has been chosen to set as default are automatically copied to /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps.
The your icon set must be copied in /usr/local/lib/X11/themes.
In /etc/desktop_icon_theme type the name of the directory containing your icons.

The icons of wbar must be edited manually in /root/.wbarstuff.
There you have to edit the file wbarvt in wbar-backup.
After editing copy this file to /root.
Rename it to .wbar.
Note: a dot (.) leading the name makes the file hidden. Click on the eye in rox to show hidden files.
Look at the previous post also.

Then by editing that file I can have wbar and leave only the icons I want to have in the desktop instead of having the entire icon cloud on the top left, right?

If you want to have your own selection and positions of the desktop icons, you have to use menu>desktop>desktop settings>desksetup templates for desk icons. Choose personal and click on the disk icon to save. But first do your work on the icon positions and names etc. remove icons with rightclick.
Click apply and then wait until X is restarted.
If you want to use your own icon set on the desktop you have to copy them in a created directory. copy the directory into /usr/local/lib/X11/themes.
Go to menu>desktop>desktop settings>desktop icon switcher. Your icon set should be shown - choose it.
If you want to make it permanent you have to use a save file or remaster. If you are remastering you will have an option to edit the directory /tmp/etc.
Open it.
Open /etc and copy /etc/desktop_icon_theme into tmp/etc.
Otherwise it will set the default icon set.
Check the file to make shure it contains the name of the directory containing your icon set.
