Re-uploading my repository, all packages were rebuilt with many fixes.

Here's the full list of changes:
- Added UnNetHack. 8)
- Changed the default rxvt-unicode font to Terminus.
- Added Yad, with /opt/bin/zenity, a backwards-compatibility symlink for Zenity.
- Moved Terminus to /opt/share/fonts, this requires a change in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf.
- Fixed the missing menu icons problem with vitetris, bs, cmus and NetSurf.
- cmus no longer sets itself as the default audio player.
- Removed an unneeded icon from the wbar package.
- Prevented Moon-buggy from writing stuff to /opt/com.
- Removed the libelf dependency from GNU Screen.
- Added /opt/bin/rxvt, a symlink to urxvt.
- Added /opt/share man to the man pages search path, through man.conf.
- Removed the man pages for urxvtc and urxvtd.

Still no go, Mick. Same error message as before. I tested with lupu-525 and -528 (although I think, it's the same). In glxgears I have ~1000 fp5s instead of ~300, but the gears are running not so smooth as with xorg.conf from slacko.

I just wanted to mention that if one is running with the Compiz SFS file, a taskbar selection called "Close all open windows" can cause a lockup as it also closes the dummy xwin started using the terminal.
Is there a way around this one can try?

Is the openbox wm compiz compatable?

Have you started a Slacko Compiz thread yet?

Oh, Merry Xmas.

Figured that was appropriate for running xwin.

I have began to have problems that may be attributed to the mouse.
Anyway, I had Slacko with Compiz running and went away from the computer.
When I returned to a black screen, the power save had kicked in, Slacko came back with the rxvt window that starts it in the middle of the screen and it then moved to its home position of the upper left of the screen.
Clicking on the menu button did not work although clicking on the terminal icon on the desktop did.
I went back and tried the menu button again and still no go.
So is it a problem of "If Compiz is already running" that the startup using rxvt is trying to run it again when exiting from the power screen saver?
I do not know and am just guessing here.

What window managers are compatible with Compiz?
I would like to try one of them other than dummy (no window manager) and xfce4.
Surely there is a nice window manager that would give me a desktop comparable to the default one that Slacko uses.

Also, maybe that is part of my problem in trying to run Slacko with no desktop manager.
In a case like that, what is being used for a desktop manager?
Is it Emerald?

I am open to trying a compatible desktop manager with compiz and short instructions on starting both compiz and a desktop manager without a lockup of one or the other.

So jump in with suggestions if you can.

Hi Rolf,

I have another experiment for the Gericom, I just tried this on my thinkpad and I got a noticeable improvement in Compiz performance. :) . Forget glxgears! It's reading is terrible. Before I was getting upwards of 3000+frames per 5 seconds, now it's about 200!

Hers's what I did:

Code: Select all

cp /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.bak
echo 'options radeon modeset=1' > /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf
This turns on kernel modesetting for your radeon. Reboot. You may need to restart X after reboot, I did because I got errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the compiz-test failed. After X restart compiz-test passed. Started compiz well :) . If it goes belly up (in other words X fails) then from console just type cp -f /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.bak /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf and reboot. You'll be back at square 1.

Lets' hope you can get a late Christmas present on the Gericom!

Hi Mick,

thanks for paying attention to my problem. :)

I changed modeset=0 to 1 but the same error message appears:

Code: Select all

Error: Software Rasterizer in use.
Maybe it's helpful when I attach my Xorg.0.log.

Near the bottom I find:
[ 7118.801] (EE) AIGLX error: Calling driver entry point failed
[ 7118.817] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[ 7118.835] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/swrast_dri.so
I have no glue, is it harmless or does it cover the problem?

Anyway, Thank You

Rolf

Compiz helper update .. scroll down VVVVVVV

________________________________________________
I have no glue..
Hi Rolf, I guess you mean clue. Originally I thought you meant libglu
or libglew! Sorry I don't think swrast can do it, though you can try.

I have 2 ideas left...

1) try adding this to xorg.conf

Code: Select all

# AccelDFS is enabled by default on PCI-E cards, but not on AGP cards.
        Option "AccelDFS" "True"
I found it on a gentoo wiki.

2) Try the newer kernel. I read somewhere that the kernel module had been improved for radeon since 2.6.38. I don't know if the PAE will work with the celeron in your Gericom. It works in my eee, but not on my lappy with centrino(radeon) or my P4 brookdale.

==========================================

I have made improvements to the compiz-helper.

8-bit, this should solve focus problems as I am now using a tiny 1x1px gtkdialog gui as the dummy WM. I have been trialling it for a few days and it's a big improvement on my old lappy.

Have fun!

Hi Mick,

you made my day. :D

Code: Select all

Option "AccelDFS" "True"
did the trick.

Enhanced zoom works fine, also scrolling and camera in Skype. This was always a problem in compiz for me.

Also you were right about 'clue'.

Sometimes I have no clue, how to write words.

Not true in my case, but I like this phrase: 'Misspelling is advised and increases cogitation'

Next I'll test your helper-002.pet.

Thanks for the late christmas gift,

Rolf

Ahhh! Excellent! Just made my beer taste a little sweeter hearing that news. I know you've been a big fan of compiz since Ripple. As said, Ripple was the idea behind the "dummy" window manager, and I think it fits Puppy perfectly.

Cheers and enjoy!

Hi

Here is the latest version of Wbar,
it now comes with it's own Wbar Config GUI (see pics)

I compiled it in Slacko-5.3.1

It still requires that imlib2 is installed,
so i attach a .pet which i made from the slackware imlib2-1.4.4-i486-1tm.txz package.

After installation, go to: Menu > Desktop > Wbar Config
then click on the Reload button
and the Wbar should appear at the top of your screen.

Here is the latest version of Wbar
Nice job Catdude.
Working better than the previous one I was using in Slacko.
(I think that was Lucid compiled)
A little tip for wbar users . . . sometimes the background picks up from the desktop. Right click on the wbar (but not an icon) to get rid of this . . .
. . . OK better add Wbar to Slickpet News

Hi puppyluvr,
do you mean you ran mick's compiz helper (made for slacko) in lupu?

Hi Mick,
another great success and hats off to you: compiz helper got 5 success out of 5 and compiz runs great (compiz helper v1, didn't try v2 yet, but probably will for the 1x1 pixel rxvt fix).
Do you have any specific formatting for machine specs you'd like to see?
Machine spec:
quad AMD 2.8Ghz
nvidia geforce460, running on Igu's 290-slacko.sfs [edit]Shino made the sfs, sorry Shinobar...[/edit] drivers
2GB ram
glxgear gives 15000 about

Several questions:
- the dummy wm looks like openbox, but I don't get the menu by right clicking on desktop; any way to get that feature back?
[edit] looks like only gtkdialog and lxpanel are running with "xwin dummy", which explains why it looks like openbox[/edit]
- tried to run trinity and compiz simultaneously, but get black screen (compiz running on top of trinity, cause I see some sort of cube shape flying by when I switch desktops by Ctrl+Alt+Arrow)
- I couldn't find Cairo dock in the slacko repo; is it available? (otherwise I'll stick with wbar that CatDude improved, awesome, by the way, thanks mate)
- Transmission v1.20 is default in slacko... if not done yet, I'll compile the 2.42; interested?

Thought I would give you an update on my install on the old Toshiba laptop.
After using the second compiz helper pet, I am getting further with the rendering working. I still get a lot of flicker from the initial start of compiz fusion splash screen.
And I have to on occasion click on taskbar stuff a few times to get it to appear. But once everything is up it seems to work well and I noticed that the swap partition is not being used right away as it was before.
I do not know how much ram is reserved for the video card to use and that could have effects on display also.
But for a PC that old with limited memory to even work with compiz is good.
The thing that really impresses me is that compiz is working on both my laptop and desktop PCs with desktop graphic effects that MS Windows tells me are not doable on my PC and push the user to go out and buy yet another PC with better specs as to hardware that will be outdated a week later and one update of MS windows later or the next release of MS windows needing yet more hard drive space, memory, newer processor, etc.

My laptop has win XP on it and after a few updates and security installs from MS, it takes almost fifteen minutes from booting to get to a usable desktop and only if no updates to MS or the antivirus are found and the AV is not doing a full system scan.

So Slacko either with or without Compiz on it is a blessing giving me back a computer that I can actually use!

Well, I built transmission v2.42, but the executable is 18MB... does anyone have advice to reduce that somehow? Otherwise, I can just post the executable on megaupload.
As a side note, I had to get libevent from slackware repo, but that went very smoothly! Awesome!

compiz_helper-002.pet works fine and is a big improvement. Thanks Mick. :D

Wbar, Cube Atlantis and Snow are also working fine. Wbar wouldn't be my first choice and I don't think I 'll use Snow, but I remember Cube Atlantis that I've used some years ago and it's nice to have it back. Thank you CatDude. :D

I was looking for Cairo Dock and found one here. I renamed cairo-dock-2.1.3-9-i686_495.sfs to cairo-dock-2.1.3-9-i686.sfs and it seems to work fine with Slacko. :D

I created a script with

Code: Select all

cairo-dock -o
(you can also try cairo-dock -c) and moved it to the startup folder.

Have a nice day,

Rolf
