You are welcome, Aarf, I feel lucky today
Sickgut, here is the solution for single click debian package installation:
Download the attached archive and unzip it. There is a desktop entry file with some modifications made by me.
Then click with right mouse button on any debian package.
Choose Customise menu. A new window will appear. Then just drug and drop the file in this window and choose Copy.
Click again with right mouse button on any debian package and choose X-Debian-Applications-Viewers-meowget.desktop. You can rename the file anyway you like.
That's it
You can remove number 12 from the known-issues.txt
Edit: I use this code in the file:
| Code: | [Desktop Entry]
Name=meowget
Exec=xterm -e dpkg -i
Terminal=true |
Feel free to experiment more with this code. You can see some code examples in the files in /usr/share/applications/
This code works, but maybe someone else can make it better. It was pure luck for me to make it work this way. There should be another better way to do it.

I have just made a frugal install to HD using grub instructions from saintless and it worked flawless and easy!. Afterwards I used apt/get to install some packages and it was really smooth. So from my brief testing I can confirm that this is an *very* interesting project, though still with many rough edges. Some of those I noticed were
I wanted to switch keyboard layout to german quertz, but it seemed not to work /probably it needs restart of X.
Font in terminal was very small for me / I have 1650x1080 screen. I tried to add an alias to .bashrc with setttings from xfontsel, but this only works if I start a terminal from the commandline, not from the desktop icon or the menu
I like the settings for JWM very much / capture and alignement with other windows, what I missed was the ability to resize the window with the top border.
Please take my apologies if some of this was already treated somewhere in the thread, but the forum thread is already very long and I couldnt read all of it. I cannot promise to contribute much, since I havent got that much free time, but I will keep the install on my harddisk and run it from time to time. I hope there will be more contributors to give it the polish it deserves, although - I have to say it - the name Pussy is a liability in that respect.
Sickgut, I read you slimmed down the base by hand to remove unnecessary files. If I am not mistaken the debian packages from apt-get are installed untrimmed atm. I remember Iguleder published some scripts for autotrimming of deb packages a while ago when he was working on dpub, so, somewhere in the future this might be an idea to implement something in that direction.
I applaud your dedicated work, all the best.

Hi, Emil
The easy way to change the keyboard layout is to open Catroll panel --> open the folder keyboard and run the script language-and-mapping inside. Choose your layout and restart the computer. I don't know way but restart X is not enough. I will do some more testing.
About your second question read here on the bottom of the page:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=69475&start=795
JVB managed to do that.
Please, JVB, when you have time tell us what is the solution to change the fonts in xterm.
Here is his post:
| jbv wrote: | | I've managed to change the default font and size in XTerm so that I can now read it and it is almost working properly. There is only one thing with XTerm that I can't get right and that is the keyboard function keys. I've got what should be a standard 104-key keyboard, I've used the parameter *sunKeyboard: true in /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm but the function keys still don't work. I've tried running the language and mapping script and selecting a generic 104-key keyboard, all to no avail.Cheers |
I can't answer your third question, sorry.
Trim fat script for new installed programs is a great idea. I think Sickgut also is looking for a solution.

Hi sickgut ... et-al,
Just read the last two pages (very quickly and under the influence of a legal substance - Australian Wine <g>) .... Very heartened to see that nooby has brought some things to your attention. When I read sickguts last /rant (which I understand) I was a little disappointed and didn't quite know how to reply. I do now.
Sickgut, since reading your NTFS/USB rant (which I do understand) and seeing the messages following from booby and yourself, I know how to reply, but tonight is not the night. I have followed your instructions and now have a "base" pussy that I made by creating a bootable pussy (using my own ingenuity and then using "dd" from pussy). But, we "need to talk". I now understand that you are building pussy from within Linux and do not have the ability to test from outside of a Linux bootable machine (perhaps the largest target market for pussy). Let me review things tomorrow and get back to you, if necessary, I can call you and we can talk (I'm in Sydney).
Glad to hear of your decision and I support it. I was about to make the same decision that your beta2 was enough for me to spear off on my own, but if you're serious, then so am I !
Yes, include synaptic and also include XFS support.
Leave the ROX filer as the default, but consider something like Thor (or whatever it is called) or XFS both of which are more XP like and better than Win-7. We're on a killer here...... I'll get back to you tomorrow, andI am happy to read your intentions. - Pizza's here .. gotta go
Cheers, Brenton

another idea about the installation on Windows;
from what I see a hard disk install of p. linux is as easy than any other frugal puppy install. I think noryb09s windows exe installer should handle it with some tweaking.

jbv, yes sorry I ahve flooded sickgut with all my failures.
I am not good at computers.
Re Thor. I trust you talk about Thunar ?
http://thunar.xfce.org/
That is like Rox but preferred by some who likes it better.
I have not tested it. I am not on that level

re: murga-linux.com is still the home of Pussy for the immediate future.
Hi people.
After my decision to break away from the ties of Puppy i let the forum owner know of Pussies status as a non Puppy and its all cool. Pussy is allowed to stay here on a Puppy forum even tho its not a Puppy. I figure we are fine staying here for the present time, altho the puppylinux.info forum is active with a pussy section now too. I know this thread is a little large, maybe we should just start another thread, like Pussy thread #2, or maybe we should start a Pussy beta preview 3 thread when i release the next version. That would be a good time to start another thread because most the problems discussed in this thread are generally things that are related to earlier versions that arent even available for download anymore.

Single click debian package installation + small icon with debian logo.
Small changes from the previous code. See my previous post on this page.
Download the attached archive and unzip it. There is a desktop entry file called meowget.desktop.
Then click with right mouse button on any debian package.
Choose Customise menu. A new window will appear. Then just drug and drop the file in this window and choose Copy.
Click again with right mouse button on any debian package and choose meowget.desktop. You can rename the file anyway you like.
This is the new code:
| Code: | [Desktop Entry]
Name=meowget
Comment=One click package installer
Icon=debian-logo.png
Exec=xterm -e dpkg -i |
Feel free to experiment more. You can see some code examples in the files in /usr/share/applications/

@ emil
glad you have found Pussy. Its no secret that i personally have no sense of asthetics whatsoever. I dont know how a normal person uses a computer even. After we have dealt with Pussies main technical issues, we will then proceed to address things like window manager behavior and other things.
When it comes time to do this i will need to rely 100% on you guys, i literally have no idea whatsoever at all.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
@ jbv
i apologize for the overly aggressive rant, i end up banging my head against that subject all the time. this thread has become too large to for people to sort through the info properly, but as you may find my style or replying of this forum is that i may be replying to your post but i do explain things for the benefit of everyone else at the same time, so please dont think that i was only singling you out.
Pussy is fine on live cdrom and usb if using the usb image for usb... then the hdd install things are simply AAARRRRRGH!!!!!
there are just way to many variables so i have had to put my foot down and be like "nope, sorry.... can only support the official install types in the Readme on the website..." otherwise there is so much support and time goes into all he various install methods that pussy OS itself suffers due to neglect, as did happen when i attempted to support all the various bootloaders and design an install package for them. Pussy development stopped to the point it almost died while i was tinkering with grub4dos windows installs.... simply put, the task of creating an install method for all the bootloaders under windows and linux is much bigger than making pussy itself.

# everyone
i know there is alot more developoments happening right now, if i am not posting about thing or acknowleding them then plz forgive me, the new developments have been so many and so pussy changing that im a little overstretched right now.
Thankyou to everyone here right now at this important turning point in Pussy history. There have been more awesome bugfixes, features added to Pussy in the last few days than in the history of this OS. Thanks to everyone testing and using pussy and posting.

dear sickgut,
contrary to your first impression I am not a window manager guy, or overly obsessed by "asthetics". Having a working keyboard and a readable font in terminal qualify for me as "technical issues" which could be adressed even at present stage of development. If it is true that you want to attract more people for development then the ability of reading and typing something in a terminal would be important.
cheers
about the fontsize (preliminary fix)
I found holding Ctrl key and right mouse button will open a window which can be used to set font size in terminal.
If this has to be fixed out of the box depending on the screensize this link could give a starter

Hi, Emil, try the following steps, please:
Open Catroll panel --> open the folder keyboard and run the script language-and-mapping inside.
Choose Generic 105-key (intl) PC. Continue with choosing your layout and pay attention to the screen where you choose Method for toggling between national and latin mode: Check if it is set by default for No toggling and change it with Alt+Shift combination. Then restart the computer.
Does it help? If not tell me which keyboard key is different for german quertz layout to do some tests. I don't know which keys to check for change typing.
