Nixnote -a Linux Evernote client

#1 Post by tronkel »

Users of the Evernote web-hosting service for online note-taking storage, will already be aware that there is no native Linux desktop client available. If you want to use the original Evernote client, you would have to run it under WINE.

Evernote clients exist for just about every other platform except Linux. Users of Android, Firefox and I believe Google Chrome are catered for. See developer info here:

http://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/never ... d87199a4a6

Here is a native Evernote client called Nixnote that implements a lot of the functionality of the Evernote client.
Size: 51MB, supplied as an sfs because of the size. Get it here:
http://www.datafilehost.com/download-5513d5a4.html

Requires a Java runtime and a free Evernote account that you can set up here:
http://www.evernote.com

Menu item should appear under Documents. After entering your Evernote username and password, you can then proceed to synchronise you local PC with the server.
Life is too short to spend it in front of a computer

It works!

I had to find & install the java, but once that was done, all was good.

I've just started trying to make good use of evernote, so I'm very pleased to have a linux version I can use on the laptop.

Cheers.

Nixnote 1.6

#4 Post by jfj »

As I couldn't synchronize nixnote with my evernote account, I made a new sfs of nixnote with the last version (1.6) patched to allow synchronization with the evernote servers.
I used alien2puppy to make the sfs (a very convenient tool indeed) : http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=57548. The sfs includes nixnote 1.6 and nixnote 1.6 unstable patches obtained on http://sourceforge.net/projects/neverno ... rce=navbar (i386 version).

You can download the nixnote-1.6-i386.sfs on my google drive here :

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwyG9k ... sp=sharing. (link updated)

I use this nixnote version on Precise Puppy 571 : it works ok, except 2 bugs (see the end of this post).

If you have a frugal install, before the first synchronization, take care to symlink the folder /root/.nevernote to your home folder, not to bloat your personnal storage file. All the database is in the file /root/.nervernote : it could get quite big when synchronized with your evernote account.

I use mainly evernote web app with puppylinux, but I like to be able to get all the notes locally with nixnote, for offline accessbility, an as a backup.
Nixnote is rather slow to launch (about 25 seconds on my lenovo X200s), but then is reasonably responsive. I prefer it to evernote web app for the sorting or reviewing of long lists of notes.

Nixnote is rather CPU demanding too (jvm uses near 50 % of my CPU power when nixnote is opened. So I shut it down when non using it.
Synchronization is automatic every 15 mn by default ; I prefer set the preference on manual synchronization as shutdown is very slow if a synchronization is running.
Lastly, I experienced two strange bugs :
when nixnote is displayed on desktop 1, if I click on desktop 2 to use another app, the nixnote windows is then greyed and non responsive. To close nixnote, i must use a terminal or the processus manager. If I use other apps on the same desktop as nixnote, no bug.
Sometimes, jvm goes on consuming CPU power after closing nixnote : 2 nixnote processus are still running, that I must kill with the processus manager.

Nixnote is too much a CPU eater for using it on a daily basis imho, but is a convenient mean to backup your evernote db for occasional offline access.

shutting down nixnote

#5 Post by jfj »

One more word.
When shutting down nixnote with "file - quit" or the shortcut CTRL+Q, no bug, no process running after the shutdown.
But if I shut down the nixnote window (with ALT+F4 or a clic on the X), processes are going on and I must use the process manager to kill them.

So what ?
Always use CTRL+Q to quit nixnote.

Why can't the old and insecure Java die already?
