mounting read only is usually a sign of ntfs errors

http://puppylinux.org/wikka/ntfs3g

However, I seem to recall there was an updated bugfix version of ntfs, so check which version you have

Code: Select all

ntfs-3g --version
mine shows as ntfs-3g 2011.1.15 integrated FUSE 27, and hasn't given any noticeable problems using my external 320gb and 1Tb drives, nor my flashdrives [though these are fat32]

tempestuous comments here, where you posted, also

Style is in the eye of its maker

#1102 Post by mikeslr »

Hi Volhout,

I hope the devs continue to devote their talents and energies developing Puppy's fundamentals and applications. Our various versions already have great tools for customization. While I can appreciate your aesthetic, I'd rather live with my own. Ultimately, what constitutes style is in the eye of the maker. Or, as Heidi Klum has said many times on Project Runway, "Vun day, you're in. The next day, you're out."
Attached are a couple examples of my own. The one named "Style" is my current Three-Headed Dog's Desktop. The analog clock is courtesy of xonclock.pet. I haven't played with it, but it supposed to be able to use, I think, conky's themes.
Between DaveS's Launcher, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=68200 on the left (normally set to disappear unless moused-over) fbpanel and wbar, I have 1-click access to my most frequently used programs and those, such as screen-capture, I don't wish to have to hunt for when I want them; and 2-click access to other frequently used programs: the first click being "show desktop" on fbpanel so as to gain access to wbar. It would probably be more pleasing if I turned off "desktop drive icons" --only about half of mine contain files I access when in puppies-- but I've chosen utility over style.
The one named "Slacko" is --guess what?-- my current Slacko desktop. As Slacko is still evolving, I decided not to take the time to add OpenBox-fbpanel-launcher, and just added a couple apps to jwm's taskbar. Not displayed is the result of the jwmthememaker.pet, with which I created a gold theme to go with the wallpaper. The Tulliana-2.0.pet generates beautiful icons. It was almost a shame to remove all but those for the drives.

I'm running a vanilla copy of lupu 5.28 from the original CD. I've installed update patch 4, but I believe this problem predates those patches.

Where did you get your ntfs-3g update? I don't see any links to it. And I've looked for a download link for an ntfs-3g driver for CentOS, since I'm advise it comes without one, but failed to find any.
tempestuous comments here, where you posted, also

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 656#587656
Sure. But all he offered was speculation that something was wrong with the ntfs format of the drive. At the time, I hadn't experienced the problem on the second usb drive yet, or on USB2 apparently. But the fact that other current Puppies and other distros never display this error message or feel the need to mount either drive read only suggests to me that the problem is in the code of Lupu 5.2.8.

His suggestion to defragment the drive doesn't seem to fit my situation. The 3T drive was brand new, and at the time was more than 90% empty. The other one is a bit older, and fuller, but hardly in danger of fragmentation. I run both under Windows 7 as well, and have never had a complaint about the drives from it either.

Aitch :)
ICPUG's historical review of the issue is interesting, but offers no explanation for my experience, unless the ntfs-3g driver provided with lupu 5.2.8 is the unreliable one.

I'd be happy to try your updated ntfs-3g driver, if I could get a copy.

Can anyone direct me to a pet or other lupu-compatible installation package?

I get:

Code: Select all

sh-4.1# ntfs-3g --version
ntfs-3g 2010.3.6 external FUSE 28
sh-4.1#
I'm running lupu-528.004 with rerwin's latest patches [see screenshot]...
And have never had any problem accessing/manipulating the contents of NTFS partitions .

Good for you.

I wonder why he used an old driver when a newer one (that might be more reliable) is available (somewhere, according to Aitch)?

I've upgraded a couple of Lucid 528 installs to Firefox 10.0 and SeaMonkey 2.7....both appear to be working normally.
Now to check on Opera...... :lol:

I am currently running seamonkey-2.7b5 and have not had any problems with it since installing. I prefer seamonkey and have been using it since 1.18, when I first started using puppy.

Hi Volhout! I'm so very glad I was able to help you out! :D Whenever I'm able to help someone it gives me a great smile as I'm so little able to do so these days as in the past...

Keep enjoying your Puppy. There's nothing like a really good dog, eh? 8) Even for a cat lover such as myself! lol!

Visual apeal

#1109 Post by Volhout »

@eyes-only:
I even created some icons of my own (by cutting and pasting) and assinged these to my 3 foreign programs. However, I have not been able to change the icon of the trashcan. If I try to change it, it reverts back to the old symbol after a repower. Not a major deal, but I am curious why.

@mikeslr:
A month ago I checked several reviews of small distro's, and in many puppy got good grades. In most of the reviews however there was negative remark about the appearance. Remarks like "soo 90's, cluttered desktop, childish looks". And I did not agree, since I "vamped" my own puppy to my likings already. But I have to admit that when you install puppy from the iso, the default looks are not showing the quality of the product below (as a matter of speach). I see the same in my own profession: I develop digital set top boxes, and the looks do matter. In fact, the better looking products get better field feedback despite the fact that they are technically inferior (I know since I designed them). What would happen to puppy if we could get an "out of the box" product that is visually more apealing. And I think it should NOT be the coders that design this, but people with a good feeling for aestetics (== spellcheck ?). PlayDayz should only approve and copy the required icons and thems into the build. (at least, that is how I idealize it). We should look for a volunteer.....

Oh boy Volhout! I feel like a kid in the candy shop with a $20 bill as you just keep asking me the questions I can answer! :D :wink:

Your "secret" lies in "/usr/local/apps/Trash" believe it or not and in "/usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps".

Going to the first one you'll find what looks to be an exact replica of the trashcan on your desktop. Right-click and from the menu select "Trash" and from the second menu scroll down until you find "Look inside". Inside you should find a linked icon back to the second directory which I've mentioned above, see? If not, then at the very least your desktop icon should be there - and that's the "culprit" who keeps returning to "haunt you" after each reboot! lol! :lol:

I've discovered all these things myself Volhout because I so very much love theming Puppy, changing the icons, etc., and after all these years of changing everything around each week - sometimes several times a week - you discover these little delightful treats. 8)

I hope my years of poking around have been able to help you?! :)

Cheers/Amicalement!

hi eyes-only,

I could only try this on puppeee (didn't have 528 machine within grips) but in puppeee there is no link to an icon that shows up when you do look into. There is an icon in there (no link), but that is a different one than the one actually on the desktop. I opened some of the XML files that I found with look into, but these also had no references to icons.

I did rename the icons used in the /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps folder to the ones I wanted, and even that did not solve the problem for puppeee. Apparently the /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps is not part of the save file ? The changes I made in this folder where gone after reboot.

Thanks for your help so far,

Volhout

P.S. are you volunteering for the revamping of 528 ? From your enthusiasm with toying around with puppies, you might be interested and capable of doing it. ? Basically it involves toying around with 528 until we have a professional looking default startup configuration, and maybe a second one selectable via the existing tools. Most complicating would be to clean up the desktop, to remove the icons that users would not use. I am not sure where this default desktop is defined, and how it can be tailored without recompiling code.

Most icons can be changed by simply pointing to the directory where you have chosen to store your custom icons. In the case of variables that are subject to running scripts such as drive icons and recycle bins overwriting the file in /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps will not survive a reboot, as on start-up the icons will be refreshed with the originals held in the relevant themes directory.

To enable persistence you need to replace the icons in both the theme and pixmap directories as shown below:
Here the normal Blue-Moon empty and full icons have been replaced with new icons with identical names.
The result is shown in the 528 slideshow in my signature panel. (Go full screen & press F11)

Thanks ETP for the explanation. It is educating, and I am beginnming to understand what is happening under the hood. When I am back home from my traveling, I will try this on 528 (the thread where this is in now).

On my travel I only have my eee-pc with me with puppeee 4.4 RC2. And there is something strange with puppeee. I installed the ipad theme from gcmartin, and in the themes folder there is a folder with the installed icons. This folder also contains trash full and trash empty. When selecting the iconset, the icons copy into the pixmaps folder. And I see the ipad trashcan on the desktop.

When I reboot, I get the Crystal iconset trashcan on the desktop, and it is also in the pixmaps folder. But the themes folder that contained the ipad icons, does not contain the trash full and trash empty icons anymore. They disappeared. If you have a clue, then PM me, because Jemimah is not involved in puppeee anymore, and this thread is for 528.

PlayDayz, sorry for poluting the thread with a puppeee question, I will remove this post after ETP replies. But the posts from ETP and Eyes-Only could educate others, so I suggest to keep these.

Regards,

Volhout

Lupu-528 TESTING 01a

This is an Experimental ISO - There is so much stuff in it that odds are that something is going to be wrong, but on the other hand, some things have been tested already (such as rerwin's patch-7) and some things are straightforward updates. Thanks especially to rerwin, radky, shinobar, tempestuous, and zigbert for their huge contributions. don570, BarryK, and tasmod also. The wallpaper is by dejan555. This ISO will exist alongside the lupu-528.004 release for some time.

Would you like a new browser to go with that TESTING ISO?

Google Chrome 17 Beta -> http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/Googl ... -Lucid.pet

Firefox 10 -> http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/Firefox-10-Lucid.pet

Seamonkey 2.7 -> http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/Seamo ... -Lucid.pet

If you are already using the Firefox 9.0.1-2 pet for Lucid it seems OK to let it update Help -> About Firefox.

If you are already using Seamonkey 2.6.1 it seems OK to let it update. Help -> Check for Update

Opera 11.61 -> Coming soon
Terryphi has already made a opera 6.2 sfs for Wary and Raffy
and that one worked well on Lupu528-004 too.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum

Lupu-528 TESTING 01a

Downloaded the .iso,mounted it and extracted the necessary files to a test directory and booted using grub.
Straight to desktop settings,chose local etc.Network connection and sound both present.
Changed from 'Openbox' to 'JWM' using 'WM Switcher'.
Used Dillo to download 'Google Chrome 17 Beta'(which must have Flash already installed).
Graphics looking crystal clear before I've even installed the correct driver.

Looking real good so far :)

No Mouse playdayz.

"""""""""""

Dell Studio XPS 1340

On my usb boot

Screen is 1280 x 720

Plays up if you try to modify it...locks up.

Slacko have a mesa driver pet which I have not tested.
Dell is a bitch.

""""""""""""

I forgot to connect the usb mouse when booting.

On desktop bootup >> there is no detection of

Dell...Acer ..Lenovo >> usb mouse.
Seems like the power doesn't get there...no lights on mice.

Wireless mouse >> Logitec >>> no detection.

Booted again fresh...mouse lights up ..>> works

But immediately after the Personalise setting screen comes up,
it's dead in the water.

This is a stunner...Fault.
Haven't seen this in years mate.

And now you've been taken to the dark side by ttuuxxx.
VW desktop.

I will boot off cd soon....burning now.

Same result.

::::::::::

On the bright side >> b43 broadcom is detected.

I had to add it to the wireless setup in networking.

Not the simple wireless setup....
which however does see my network out of the box.

Interface you have selected uses the wl module
not included in our list of modules supporting wpa encryption
""blah..blah etc. "

After I add it to the list I see it come up as broadcom.

Anyway I smiled when the b43 worked.

Working from my old 2.8 Celeron no name desktop.

Gigabyte board.

No problems as yet.
Mouse still working as i post.

Could it be the mouse that awed???

Or a Dell thingy.

will be interesting to see when it goes back to 69% again
