Hi, kooliepup

Bi-lateral trade is now, as far as the US is concerned, becoming a one-way street.. inbound.

Well, they're the ones who initiatied the North American Free-Trade Agreement. Countless Canadians lost their jobs (about 20 years ago), when it became in force, to Americans or Mexicans. Trade goes up and down, you know. If it favours this nation at one time and this other partner nation at another time, you have to go with the flow.

I actually like Americans. They did great things. We visited cousins in New England when I was a boy. It's their legislators I find weird.

Indeed that's the saddest part.

Just heard back from the people in charge of the CaPTain torrent system:

Yes, GPL material such as a Puppy derivative can be transmitted through their torrent.

Good news, that. Smile

On my visits to the US, I found people to be mostly very nice,
but then I didn't move in government or corporate circles, or my estimation would have surely taken a battering.

Do you have any details yet of how we could upload to them?
I presume an account would have to be created.

In the wake of Megaupload, FileServe and Filesonic are closing down their affiliate accounts. You can only upload and download your own files. This announcement was made by members of a European sports forum.

fileden says its servers are currently in maintenance. Mhhh... very strange timing... if they delete my LEGITIMATE puppy linux packages, how can I ask for a multimillionaire refund?

Subject description: alternative for file-sharing

I've been using Gobbler.com since the shutdown. It's meant for media creators to backup/transfer their project files but is super fast to transfer any file as well. They're giving away free 5GB accounts which is good enough for me for the month. On the same note, files that have already been txfrd through their system send instantly...pretty cool feature in my mind.

Yeah a few weeks back they claimed they were hacked so now they've got to redo their servers or something. They've been pretty good in the past, but now I'm just plain concerned for my files, I uploaded pretty much all my Puppy stuff there. I've got another option now though thanks to Russoodle. Ubuntu One sounds interesting too.

Not withstanding it is a very good thing to pull all this cultural pollution off the web. Still think they are bluffing though. The barbarians will be reduced to nothing without the oppressive cultural hedgemony.

Cultural pollution? I reckon Western culture is pollution - buy new, upgrade quickly, dispose immediately. We've been conned for a very long time by M$ and computer marketeers, such that it pervades all our thinking and reality bubbles like the GFC (mk 1 and mk2) are the result. "Just buy a new one" is the mantra of most people I know. What - buy a new planet?
Hope we can get through this filesharing smokescreen quickly and move on the pirates at the Big End of town. M$ and Sony, you're next...

Perhaps we can sue the FBI for vandalism. Read somewhere about compensation being due under the barbarian constitution for vandalism caused by official barbarian acts and yes some members have legitimate puppy stuff hosted at megaupload. Dont see how the rights and copy rights of the mega corporations should trump the rights and copy rights of the masses of private users who have been adversely affected needlessly..
Definition of a constitution: a list of things you will arbitarily be deprived of unless you are ready willing and able to pay and engage lawyers.

There is an ad here in the US against software piracy. They will pay you to inform on your job if they use pirated software. Informants and spies in the workplace for M$.

ECJ refuses File Sharing clampdown on Facebook/Twitter etc!

http://www.out-law.com/en/articles/2012/february/courts-cannot-force-social-networks-to-broadly-monitor-for-illegal-file-sharing-ecj-rules/

Quote:
Under the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights individuals generally have a right to privacy and protection of personal data. The Charter also confers rights on free speech, the freedom to conduct business and states that intellectual property (IP) "shall be protected". The ECJ said, however, that there was "nothing whatsoever" in the way the Charter was worded or in ECJ case law to suggest that the fundamental right to the protection of IP is "inviolable and must for that reason be absolutely protected".

The rights of a human being are not the same as the rights of a corporate 'person' - from the original whistleblower.....

Good News from the ECJ,..... until the next time.... Wink

woof woof!

I need to alert other puppians to NOT USE ifile.it for their docs intended to be shared

I used to share non-puppy-related pdf docs

- created by myself!
- owned by me!

despite this, ifile deleted all pdf files in my account, so, it shows how is poorly reliable as service, since under pressure of library.nu case, has probably deleted all pdf files without check if their were infringing or not

Yo, Dingo

It seems the case you refer to, is at odds with, or is over-ruled by the new ECJ ruling....

http://curia.europa.eu/juris/document/document.jsf?text=&docid=119512&pageIndex=0&doclang=en&mode=req&dir=&occ=first&part=1&cid=807957

Quote:
42 As paragraphs 62 to 68 of the judgment in Case C‑275/06 Promusicae [2008] ECR I‑271 make clear, the protection of the fundamental right to property, which includes the rights linked to intellectual property, must be balanced against the protection of other fundamental rights.

43 More specifically, it follows from paragraph 68 of that judgment that, in the context of measures adopted to protect copyright holders, national authorities and courts must strike a fair balance between the protection of copyright and the protection of the fundamental rights of individuals who are affected by such measures.

44 Accordingly, in circumstances such as those in the main proceedings, national authorities and courts must, in particular, strike a fair balance between the protection of the intellectual property right enjoyed by copyright holders and that of the freedom to conduct a business enjoyed by operators such as hosting service providers pursuant to Article 16 of the Charter (see Scarlet Extended, paragraph 46).

http://knowfuture.wordpress.com/2012/02/16/library-closure-of-type-nu/

Quote:
On a final note, the case of library.nu is significant because the demand for the works offered there demonstrates that filesharing is not just about pop music, porn and cams of action movies, but also those forms and sources of knowledge whose acquisition are ritually celebrated within ‘enlightenment’ culture. Many of those whose works were offered derive income not from royalties, but from related activities such as teaching and research. Such people were themselves an important component library.nu’ user base. Some have other means to access the same materials, others, especially those in countries with weaker education infrastructures and more emaciated library budgets, do not. Outside of formal education, the millions of online autodidacts may be denied access to material, seriously impinging on their lives and possibilities. When one considers the cost of text books and more especially scholarly articles, that is no hyperbole, and applies not only to the global south but the post-industrial north as well, awash in its dreams of knowledge economies and human capital.

But maybe such a concern is sheer melodrama, given the likelihood of the same works becoming freely available elsewhere. Time will tell.
