I am currently downloading the Thunderbird file. But I am a bit curious as to why the file size is around 18 megs when the SeaMonkey with SeaMonkey mail package is 19 megs.
Did you run strip on the compiled package?

I deleted the same directories that you can delete in firefox (include, idl, and the dev directory) before making the pet, I also had --enable-strip in the ./configure line when I compiled it.

EDIT: I also compiled another version of thunderbird in wary but it is only going to be supported until april 12, 2012 so I won't post that one.
It's only 12 megs in size.
