Geoffrey thanks for the links. Most of them worked on my even very old FF
browser but the webm seems to never load. Not sure what that means.

darkcity: Yeah, I'd read the Wikipedia entry, but it didn't really tell me much. Smile

nooby: Are you sure your older version of Firefox isn't simply unsure what to do with a .webm extension file?

I used to have links to test pages for both HTML5 and WebM, somewhere (all I can find at the moment is my link to the WebM project page: The WebM Project | Welcome to the WebM Project), but can't seem to find them, right now.
Didn't older (4-9, maybe?) versions of Firefox have an optional HTML5 rendering setting that you generally had to enable? (Or maybe even for WebM, too.)

Is it any worse than the Windows version?
And would it have got better if they kept developing it?

The version they put effort into maintaining, of course, is the Windows version. Which isn't to say it's perfect, but out of the three versions, it's the best of the three. It's always performed a fair bit better for me than the other two versions.

The Linux and Mac versions are both terrible - maybe not in the same ways, but still poor performers.

If they'd actually put effort into developing it, maybe. Who knows? It seems like they were more interested in pushing security updates than better interfacing with core Linux graphics routines/tech, and refining the memory requirements. Right now, browsers do tend to take up a decent chunk of RAM, and Flash shouldn't add significantly to that.

(All IMHO, of course, and I could be wrong on any or all points. Smile )

Hi all,

It appears that a new version of gnash has now been released according to this article at: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTA2MjE although it is noted that this latest update is still not up to snuff in terms of the current specs for Adobe Flash. (I never could get gnash to play youtube videos on my debian desktop, so it was one of the few things I had to remove and replace with non-free software). Maybe the pace of development re: gnash will pick up now, given the announcement by Adobe --hopefully.

Hi all,

See this announcement over at Slashdot which serves as a reminder that Adobe has released the last version of Flash Player with support for Linux based operating systems...

April 1st: edit -- Here is another write-up by Michael Larabel over at Phoronix which provides further details regarding the future of Flash Player for Linux distros.
