Recommend a Puppy iso under 100Mb to fit on credit card CD?

#1 Post by greengeek »

I want to burn a Puppy distro to a "credit card" CD with a limit of 100MB, and intend to use this as a rescue CD and also (if possible) for Youtube browsing.

EDIT - I realised later that distros under 100MB will fit on an 8cm CD, but not on a credit card CD, which only holds around 50MB. However, if you are specifically looking for a distro around 100MB I highly recommend o1micko's "ThinSlacko" (99MB). It's awesome. Get it here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=78228

Anyway, back to the rest of the original post:

I plan to use this on a range of hardware from older PII gear through to relatively modern PCs, so reliable general performance is a requirement.

Which Puppy versions would anyone recommend?

If I can find one with Abiword included that would be great, although the ability to browse (and save) Youtube files is more important to me in this particular application.

Easy handling of drive mounting, and easy use of USB sticks is a must.

cheers

Thanks lobster, that Barebones works well. Ideal for what I'm after.

I realise now the youtube thing is an unnecessary and unrealistic addition in this particular application. It would just add bloat.

That forum you suggested also contained a link to Wary Tiny, an 81mb iso that also seems really ideal for this purpose.

Both of these isos can be burnt to a "credit card CD" and carried in the wallet as a rescue CD.

Oops, silly me. I just realised that the credit card CDs are only 50mb, not 100.

Back to the drawing board.

I keep coming back to this project as something I want to achieve - partly because a tiny "rescue cd" is handy to have in my wallet, but also because learning what is or is not needed in a distro is an interesting topic.

Anyway, I will be spending some time getting to grips with the PupnGo project as it looks like a building block for me to structure my rescue cd on. I've decided I don't really want internet access - just the ability to copy files over from a dying hard drive or crippled O.S to a usb stick or CD.

PupnGo is here:

Actually, I think I have found exactly what I need - an earlier version of Barebones - version 2.01r2

Mentioned in this forum entry:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=75428

Seems to be about 47mb and has a reasonable mounting utility to allow easy access to HDDs and USB sticks.

Acronis rescue CD is about 60Mb, (IIRC there used to be a limited free version).
Its a Linux based rescue disk, which can save files in compressed and encrypted formats.

Thanks Barkin. The thing is , I've realised now that the little credit card / business card CDRs only hold about 52mb so it's going to be tight.

I've heard that "overburning" boosts that a little bit so I will find out what is possible when I take delivery of the special CDRs soon.

(I have been carrying a "Damn Small Linux" version of this around in my wallet but it's not that nice to use. I have become quite familiar with puppy so that's what I am hoping to use if I can..)

Hi, greengeek.

Just a thought: if you think "shirt pocket" instead of "wallet", you could use a mini-DVD (1.5 Gb), and then you can choose and use any and all Puppies for your purpose. Plus you can save your sessions on a DVD.

As I said, just a thought.

Thanks, the mini-DVD idea is tempting but I'd have to go with a mini-CD as some of the machines I maintain still only have CD players.

The USB sticks are nice too - but only for machines that can boot usb. Most of my machines can't unfortunately :-(

I think I will have to stick with the business card CD method for now.

For the record, found 750 Mb business card-size DVDs and 125 Mb business card-size CDs here:
http://www.minicdwizard.com/custom_shaped_cd.html

A bit pricey and not widely available, though...

Try PlopBootmanager (a few kb). 8)

You can boot from cd and then select the boot device (cd, usb, hd etc) 8)

PlopBootmanager has all needed drivers included. 8)

I do use this on one old computer that can not boot from usb. 8)

Edit: I do have an iso, but it is too big (2356 kb) to post this one here. I will upload this to my mediafire account and then post the link here within the next 4 hours - if possible (i am an a slow connection now).

Edit: I see, it is not necessary to upload this iso. There are several links on the web. Try "Plop Bootmanager" for search anywhere (but not google)

Hope this will be the needed solution to you.

I guess you've moved on from the 100MB size, but I found a nifty little Puppy based on the 4.0 series which has Firefox and weighs in at 72MB. Whoever made it put a bit of work into it and it's a shame if it were to disappear forever. I think 4.0 was a good version overall and the iso was small to begin with so it would be a good base to work with.

If you take out Firefox and remaster it then it might come within your size requirement.

Verbatim make mini CDRs and CDRWs in 8cm/3" size which are 185mb/21minute audio, or 150mb/118 minute audio versions

Plenty of space for modern 'larger' puppies, still :D

However ....Class 10, 300x or, if your lucky, 600x microSD flash is far faster, convenient, and wear resistant, and available in multi-Gb formats quite/relatively cheaply, and can be put in a USB adapter, with PLOP and Puppy on, for booting from any PC

Aitch :)

Nope! Doesn't work. PLOP configuration won't load, says my kernel is too old. (This IS discrimination, you know. Kernel is 2.6.30.5, for lupu 5.25 retro !)
See screen capture below. So what next? Is there anything else?
