| Quote: | Thanks, the mini-DVD idea is tempting but I'd have to go with a mini-CD as some of the machines I maintain still only have CD players.
The USB sticks are nice too - but only for machines that can boot usb. Most of my machines can't unfortunately Sad
I think I will have to stick with the business card CD method for now. |
Try PlopBootmanager (a few kb).
You can boot from cd and then select the boot device (cd, usb, hd etc)
PlopBootmanager has all needed drivers included.
I do use this on one old computer that can not boot from usb.
Edit: I do have an iso, but it is too big (2356 kb) to post this one here. I will upload this to my mediafire account and then post the link here within the next 4 hours - if possible (i am an a slow connection now).
Edit: I see, it is not necessary to upload this iso. There are several links on the web. Try "Plop Bootmanager" for search anywhere (but not google)
Hope this will be the needed solution to you.

I guess you've moved on from the 100MB size, but I found a nifty little Puppy based on the 4.0 series which has Firefox and weighs in at 72MB. Whoever made it put a bit of work into it and it's a shame if it were to disappear forever. I think 4.0 was a good version overall and the iso was small to begin with so it would be a good base to work with.
If you take out Firefox and remaster it then it might come within your size requirement.

Verbatim make mini CDRs and CDRWs in 8cm/3" size which are 185mb/21minute audio, or 150mb/118 minute audio versions
Plenty of space for modern 'larger' puppies, still
However ....Class 10, 300x or, if your lucky, 600x microSD flash is far faster, convenient, and wear resistant, and available in multi-Gb formats quite/relatively cheaply, and can be put in a USB adapter, with PLOP and Puppy on, for booting from any PC

Nope! Doesn't work. PLOP configuration won't load, says my kernel is too old. (This IS discrimination, you know. Kernel is 2.6.30.5, for lupu 5.25 retro !)
See screen capture below. So what next? Is there anything else?

There is another post about Plop here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67379
It looks like a useful way to boot or rescue a PC that has no ability to boot direct from USB. I plan to test Plop on a variety of machines over the next few weeks.
I feel like I might need to divide this topic as follows:
1) 50Mb isos for burning to business card / credit card CDs
2) Under 150Mb isos for burning to 8cm circular CDs
3) Other solutions like Plop etc
Thanks to everyones input I have now got 4 or 5 really useful 50mb isos that I am testing and will probably link to a new topic when I have written up a full comparison of their performance on different machines.
I really want to tailor the best one so that it has no "save" option on shutdown (plus a couple of other tweaks) and I am hoping to call it something like Puppy "Mount n' Rescue".

Aitch ! Suggesting a non-Puppy based rescue CD !??#$%@!!
Wash your mouth out with soap and water!
Oh well, I guess Plop is non-Puppy too.
Maybe I will just stick with Puppy "Mount 'n Rescue"

Lobster - I looked at this a while ago but now that I go back for another look I think the link is dead. How did you fit Lucid 5.1 on a credit card CD?

If you watch my posts, I regularly suggest whatever works, which is mainly puppy original, variants/puplets or puppian code, but often just open source/linux or related - like boot managers, which many people need for older hardware
Only thing I know needs washing regularly is windoze, and even then you don't see much [apart from BSOD maybe]

There is a Meanpup (puppy-2.02-opera.iso) by John Murga at http://www.my-plan.org/storage/puppyLinux/
Fits on a 50mb cd. I have not tried it, though.

Thanks Steevieb. That Meanpup works quite well. I have now got a list of about 4 or 5 possible candidates that I am comparing for the 50Mb business card CD.
I have just started a new topic specifically for a comparison of the puppies that meet the 50Mb limit (as I have confused this current topic a bit by introducing the 100Mb idea).
I will keep this previous topic updated with my trials of puppies used with Plop and miniCDs etc.
The new topic post is here:

Thanks Aitch. Does that mean the embedded pics have to be online somewhere, rather than uploaded to the forum? cheers
