I don't know exactly what you reason for choosing cli.

- If it is because you work in cli, and want a full-featured player, moc and cmus is options.

- If you just want to play an album directory now and then, and find it easy to open a terminal, ashplay could be your choice. Ashplay uses the same playing engine as 'pmusic -B' (use only pmusic backend), and support many different formats wihout having to install new dependencies.

- If you want to use as small resources as possible, and support of mp3/ogg is enough, madplay or mpg123 (ogg123) might be the choice.

- If you in the end like a full blown gui-player but are on a low-powered system, you can use Pmusic.... You can build you preferred playlist in gui, start playing and then click on the tray-icon (or execute pmusic -B to switch to backend mode).

Many thanks to all for your help and suggestions.
I'm leaning towards MPG123.

The reason I want to use the CLI only is for two reasons:

1) Have an old PC (PII) which cannot handle X very well.

2) I will be using the old PC as a sort of Media Player but with a webserver
running on my local LAN so that can I can create playlists etc.
Basically the webserver will call a bunch of scripts which in turn will control
the MP3 player app, hence the need for CLI only.
The old PC will sit next to my HI-FI and I'll connect the audio output
of the sound card to the HI-FI amp and with my smartphone (via wifi) I can
select what gets played and edit/create playlists.

There are probably apps like this already but I figure not only will it be fun
to make my own, but educational too.
