Frustrated: Can't Surf Internet Regardless of Connectivity

Subject description: Even though my connection is okay, I get an error every time I try to visit a website.		  
To all the resident Linux masters:

I've used RAM ONLY Operating Systems in the past, including Linux, but I have just recently downloaded the newest version from puppylinux.org and I LOVE IT!

I downloaded version Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 and Slacko Puppy 5.3.1 and have successfully loaded them both on separate USB flash drives for use on my Dell Inspiron 8600.

All is well with everything EXCEPT when connecting to the internet. I see that I am not the only one with this problem.

ISSUE:
After following Puppy connect instructions and selecting ethO on the Internet Connection screen, Puppy successfully connects to my router, which is connected to my cable modem. I receive a message saying I am now connected to the internet successfully. I open the Dillo homepage and type www.google.com in the address bar and all I get it : "ERROR: DNS can't resolve www.google.com." I've tried installing Firefox and it won't even try. I've tried both versions of Puppy, nothing works.

I used both versions on my desktop, and it works fine.


REQUEST:

What can I do to troubleshoot this problem? My network card is a Broadcom 440x 10/100.

I love Puppy and would love to use this system for a while on my laptop, but this problem is very frustrating.

Anything helps!

I suspect you're not really connected. I've had this happen to me. It says you are successful, looks successful, but isn't.

That may be the issue. Sometimes puppy stumbles on broadcom drivers at first.

For my Asus 1015pem which uses a broadcom wireless, running Lucid 5.28 I merely needed to install the pet a few posts down in the second link-- this one (and then reboot):

also depending on how you are connecting, you may have to be sure to do this:

I tried that and still nothing. I tried adding the new pet, nothing.

Hopefully the next release will have correct drivers, if ever. :/

What do you mean?

Also, I am not sure if I installed the pet correctly that sfeeley mentioned above.

Can anyone explain these things to in detail. Keep in mind, I'm still in retarded-mode with Linux.

No. However, I'm thinking I didn't install the pet correctly mentioned above. My system is set to not save anything, therefore, when I rebooted my computer it lost the information.

Is there a way to install the pet without restarting?

A pet will ordinarily install fine without restarting. However, in your case I think that the pet is blacklisting one driver and inserting another to be detected at startup. There may be a way around this, but I don't know.

That said--first, install the pet, then try connecting to see if it works. Maybe I'm wrong and it will work, even without restarting.

I'm really mostly a noobie trying to be helpful.

I plan on downloading frisbee to lucid on another PC with active internet, then trying it on my laptop and praying for successful results!

Its like a ping pong. You send a request to an address, and if there's a communication you'll get packets from that address. To do it you can open terminal, type ping [address] like, to know if you're connected to your router, ping 192.168.1.1(thats usually the router/modem address) if you get packets then you're ok with the router...

Hi Knife,

When using the ping command to send packets to your router, example:

Code:
ping 192.168.1.1


hit Ctrl (plus) C keys to stop the process and get a summary. Then, you can exit from the terminal properly. Otherwise, another way is to specify a set number of packets to send to your router (or a website), to complete the process and get a summary:

ping -c 8 192.168.1.1

Knife,

The first thing to do is to make sure you have a workable install of Puppy.
You are doing Frugal installs to a USB flash drive.
Make a save file on the USB flash drive, to be able to save settings.
On first reboot or shutdown, you will get option to make save file.
Make a save file and place it on the flash drive.
Now boot Puppy, now using a save file.
Now you have a place to store setting info and to install programs too. (the save file)
