Unless you are going to sit ontop of your tv the HDMI cables arent cheap either. Suppose you could have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard to compensate. Once again extra cost.

Never had a problem with my $5 HDMI cables from ebay/amazon ...

The new TV came with a $60 cable ("free"), and it doesn't make any difference.

It does look cooler, so I use the expensive cable :-)

Last time I checked HDMI to VGA adapters cost more than a PI
Not all of them - there's a bog std. one for a couple of quid in the CPC catalogue if you've got time to search it out. If you're desperate, I can look up the code from past orders and PM it.
Later: sorry, can't find it - must've been a telephone order.

I'm desperate (in more ways than 7) Please post details Sage.
Did you order one (or try to get a slice?)

Twitter from rpi team - gone silent. They are up to something . . .
. . . I am still excited . . .
I am hoping their site will go up soon and then we will have more info :)

Just got a message from Liz Upton from Rpi headquarters
Mad doesn't even *start* to address what it's like here at the moment. Absolutely can't believe the interest. We've got the Chinese State Broadcasting "news" people visiting this morning. Mental.

Thank you for Spike. I hadn't seen that before, and was reduced to making snorting noises. Lovely stuff.

Up crustacea!
some of you have probably seen the snort inducing video for doubters and detractors . . .

They are clearly swamped.

Cable adapters won't work because of the analogue/digital mismatch.
I assume that whatever you bought worked for you ... But for a couple of quid ?

If you found a full on converter that works at that price, I am sure people here would be interested in you digging it out :-)

This is the cheapest I could find, but it is still more than thirty quid :

No one is going to be desperate, as I suspect no-one will have their PI in their hands for a while :-(

Cheers

I don't know if a simple HDMI to VGA+Audio cable will work as advertised on ebay?

Any care to gamble a few quid to test one of these with an XBox or DVD player with HDMI out, and report back?

I'm sure potential Pi owners would be interested

There's more than analog/digital behind the problem of converting HDMI to VGA. HDMI is set up to be paranoid about someone converting protected content to unprotected, like VGA. Whenever it sees an unprotected output, a message goes back up the chain to convert to standard definition (SD).

I set up a TV (for someone else who watches the idiot box) using a 31" CRT monitor with a VGA input. It will show 1080i, which looks quite nice on a CRT. (The interlaced lines actually fit between those of the alternate field.)

The problem, even when showing off-the-air TV, is that you may have to buy old equipment to display HD via VGA. I got a Sony SAT HD-200 off eBay. This is a very nice box which originally cost around $800. The satellite input is obsolete, but for people like my friend who are upset about paying cable rates the off-the-air tuner is very good.

A side benefit of using an old 31" CRT monitor is that you don't have to worry about thieves doing a smash-and-grab if they see it through the glass door to the patio.

Meanwhile Liz Upton has promised to send me a model A board
thanks to the kind prompts of a US Puppy (also called Ed)

[too kind guys, too kind]

So I am frutified and raspberrian.
So much so I started a blog of my adventures
starting with purchasing fruit coloured accessories

Hello Lobster...

I'll be watching your "Raspberry Pi" adventures with interest.

By-the-way...

Barry Kauler is the guy in the mug shot :)
http://bkhome.org/bkauler/melbourne-dec-2010.htm

Just done a post on using dd (isn't that a bra size?)

ahem . . . just done a post on using dd to put Debian on an SD card (to brastrap from - eh bootstrap from) . . .
http://raspberrian.tumblr.com/post/1884 ... -to-debian

No hardware and no HDMI cable but software is ready
and wallpaper is ready
Image
Linux Tmxxine is my brand of Puppy

Next step I think is what to strip and add from Debian and how to turn an image on an SD card into an ISO or image file
- so a pseudo Puppy experience will be ready for our Puppy Pi-oneers 8)

The raspberrian website (which I only started yesterday) will be merging with the team python blog
http://teampython.wordpress.com/

Any ideas for a name?

Great.
Added my first post (OK it it is a rehash)
to the combined blog
http://raspberrypy.tumblr.com/

Will take us a while to establish a style . . .
I have only done one combined blog before
antiloquax owns the site and I am a guest blogger.
We will see how it works out and I hope we will gladly consider other guest bloggers.

Still waiting for my chance to order one, but I did find a usb to micro usb cable, micro usb phone charger and a usb keyboard with trackball. Very cheap at our town's SPCA thrift store.
