usb install killed windows (Repaired)

:evil: I was trying to instll puppy 108 to usb pen.
The first try did nothing.
So i did a search and found this comand to erase the drive
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=2
Now windows don,t boot on my dad,s laptop.
Help my dad will kill me when he find.s out.
What can i do to fix this????????

from what i can tell you just deleted windows. All you can to is reinstall

Yep; /dev/hda is the first hard drive, the first USB pen drive is /dev/sda

I'm real sure the dd command does a clean wipe, so most likley nothings left.

So sorry to hear about this, don't mess around in the terminal console if your a noob!

no just make sure not to use a command untill you know EXACTLY what it does.

How much of the drive did he erase? Maybe just the MBR, which can be replaced if he has the Windows installation disk.

bs=512 count=2 should be 1024 bytes, just the mbr as you say Flash. What I would do is install grub to the mbr, then use grub to boot windows. After that you can do an "fdisk /mbr" or the equivalent.

:lol: Im all set my 12 year old brother used the xp cd and got windows to work
with out loseing any data.
I didnot know he was that smart.
Im going to have help me install puppy to my usb pen.

age and XP rescue cd

Hey, Joe, how old are you? We noticed a number of kids in the Forum and maybe you're one of them. :)

The XP CD can be used as rescue CD, and a menu of choices would appear, from which the user could choose to "fix MBR" (or something like that).
