if you can make a tiny, CLI only apt-get supported pussy-based distro,
then it would make a fantastic 'underdog' linux...

This is not to imply that "Pussy" is mainly associated with something sexual or deviant....just because google searches bring up a bunch of porn.

Ask any school-age kid in America what Pussy means, and they'll tell you it's something they don't want to be. It's most commonly associated with being weak, ineffectual, cowardly. I firmly believe that somone should have the absolute right to name their own distro after something they believe provides insight into what their work is all about, rather than worrying about perverted associations noted by google searches.

Getting apt-get to work with busybox might be a path toward a very small
CLI based distro being built?

Pussy is not Puppy and Subito is not Puppy either.

But both Pussy and Subito have multi user capability and
both can be root and both can do frugal install

sadly Iguleder has decided to not include ntfs-3g in the iso
even if one can install it later if one know how to. But it is possible.

So both Pussy and Subito has potential to be whatever one like
although not a pussy. Roar-ng can make a Puppy? At least the older
version could but the newer seems to have cut woof compatibility?

I find both projects very interesting.

Sickgut said:
There is only 1 reason that Puppy is #9 on distrowatch and not #1, and that is its hard to install software onto puppy that isnt immediately available in the Puppy repos. IF Puppy was able to install 20,000+ packages at the drop of a hat with no dependency hunting and problem solving then Barry would not only be one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world but there would be a another few hundred thousand people using Puppy within a few months.

This analysis is only partly right. My frustration is the fact that Puppy doesn't 'just work' despite claims to the contrary - just look at the forum topics. Especially for noobs like me. 4.2.1 worked on my old PC but only after Months of fiddling on getting the Oki printer working. Now I'm wondering if I can get something working on the newer Dell, which of the dozen choices would be best and whether I have the stamina to repeat the Oki ordeal for a new version. If Puppy were #1, all this would have been solved, so I have to conclude that the main problem is not the install problem (why not just use Ubuntu or Debian instead of Puppy) but the incomplete nature of Puppy that makes it not work too often. Something is missing and my guess would be that development needs a second stage of more intensity. Puppy devs really seeem to be more like inventors than developers as evidenced by the lack of double/ triple digits in version numbers. I would be much happier downloading 4.11.153 than 5.3.1 (my latest attempt). In order for this to happen, every problem solved should be taken back into a puppy version (or master list of special instructions) but it seems that jumping to sexy new versions is more appealing to devs than the dull work of 'kaizen' - continuous improvement.

So I'll be interested to see if Pussy will pick up where Puppy seems to be leaving off or if Puppy will rise to the occasion - the prompting of Sickgut's critique. Either way, hopefully someone will be interested in making it just work for all us noobs.

Cheers

I suggest you to try frugal install with this file from JBV in the /live folder + initrd.img and vmlinuz inside. Nothing else.
It is the same OS + much more user friendly interface.
Check out the Readme.txt first.

Nooby, the grub code is the same. The file from the link is the same base version of pussy linux but 1-filesystem and 2-base squash files are merged into 1 squash file + more user friendly desktop. Just replace 1-filesystem and 2-base squash with this one in your /live folder and reboot the computer. Everything is in the Readme.txt in my previous post.

Must have done something wrong seeing no seamonkey?
But I rather want to have Firefox. Does Debian have them
as squash in their repo?

the server version of pussy is already this, its fully functional also with a ncurses wicd-curses wifi program that offers a console kinda gui you can navigate with tab and spacebar and enter etc for your wifi and lan connections. Also has lighttpd and sshd and telnet and ftp server working out the box. Ofcause it has nano text editor and all the network clients like ftp and telnet and ssh and it has lynx for web browsing console mode etc. It isnt made to be the smallest OS possible.

91mb or so in size its compareable to puppy but has alot less, the commandline console whatever you call it network manager was 75mb worth, without this the OS would be much slimmer, but there is no use in having apt-get at all if you cant connect to a network easily.

dont forget to use a partition named live-rw as it will pick this up as a save partition or use the example 1gb save file on the website, or read the readme on the site to make your own save file yourself of whatever size.

if you enable safe search and actually search for pussy linux then you will see actual pussy linux

in the dev stages as we are, i dont want anyone joining the pussy team who is more concerned with a name than anything else. Pretty Pussy is even being considered as the next ubuntu name by quite a few people.

i live in australia and here pussy means a cat, just because americans turn everything into sex doesnt mean that we australians have to follow suit or obey american etiquette. also i chose pussy because its only 2 letters changed from puppy because the OS isnt puppy but is a similar 4 legged furry domesticated animal but not the same as puppy.

however, having made the announcement that pussy isnt going to try to seek official puppyness and we are going to follow our own direction, the pussy name isnt needed anymore. I wouldnt have named it pussy if it wasnt for puppy. If puppy was called ice i would call my OS fire, if puppy was called up i would call the OS down. etc.

pussy will remain the working name, when we hit full beta this may change, but there is quite a following now and pussy is quite popular and it would be a shame to change the name so late in the game and then have to have a campaign informing everyone that "omfg leet OS version 12345421" is still pussy.

what im saying is that i dont give 2 damns about offending anyone with the name, but ive sworn that the OS will be a community effort so if the users wanna change to something else we will, the OS inst just for me anymore, i released the best OS i could in the alpha and its the community that has contributed enough to release the next 2 versions.

i used to run a quite active puppy linux site/ repo, but hosting this one OS has the bandwidth get used 20 fold atleast, 20 times more popular than the puppy repo i was running, infact often in a single day my site serves more data from pussy than the puppy repo for an entire month.
pussy gets downloaded atleast 20 times a day and its been like that since christmas/ newyear. Thats 1800 times atleast by the end of march, and some days its nearer 30 times a day its downloaded. I have also had quite a few compliments on the name as its memorable and people have tried the OS simply because it was a novelty, i dont see the name so far as a problem

also alot of people like cats, me included.

so meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow hiss purr purr purr, also i have very long whiskers and i must go now and eat my fish and drink my milk then wheni go to the toilet ill delicately cover up my waste hygenicly by burying it then ill lick myself clean and so i dont even need to be bathed.

Well....the way I figure it is this... Out of 7 billion people on the planet, you'll find at least 20 interested in downloading pussy anything; probably doesn't even need to boot up. BTW/ I'd like to compliment you on the name.

re: announcements = :(

i was hoping i wasnt going to have to do this but im having to take an extended break for a while, not specificly from puppy/ pussy and stuff but from computers in general in an attempt to prevent a reoccurring problem with some form of epilepsy that isnt currently being treated very well.

the computer screen etc and reading text and looking at bright moving and flashing objects all day is only part of the problem, the thing that is causing the most problems is a stressful life style. I had to give up work in a computer full retail plus shipping business due to stress and ever since then i have not been able to strike a good balance between boredom/ learning new things/ and working myself till something breaks. It seems that for the last year maybe ive been putting as much effort into computer related linuxy type stuff as a real job, with none of the benefits, ive basicly been working and suffering work related stress on the mind and body (24 hour shifts of intense coding at times) with none of the actual benefits of real employment. I wasnt well enough to be working before but now im basicly working again and im falling prey to the same things that was happening to me before (big surprize). When im in a cycle like this im driven by boredom and a sense that i am not accomplishing anything. Then i decided to start a small business or throw myself into doing something then i over extent myself and have to take time off and the cycle begins again.

after the most recent relapses i thought i would be back and at it within a few days or at most a couple of weeks, but that has turned into months and this problem isnt going to get any better unless i adopt a more stress free lifestyle.

this isnt a bitch about linux, doing stuff for free or whatever, or the community here or the puppy vs pussy thing or whatever. its more of a realization of a problem and finding a solution. For me i think the solution is to take a break and return a little fresher and without strange siezure type things that have been worsened to some extent by stress and too long sessions in front of a computer.

so im letting you all know that i wont be around much for a while but i plan to return maybe in a more balanced fashion that is part of a more balanced lifestyle.

i will return after maybe a couple or a few months or so. I dont think the current project im doing will die over night, even if it fades a little im sure it can be resurrected once ive returned and released a new version that is updated and better.

in the mean time i would like to thank saintless, jbv especially for holding down the fort while i have been absent in recent months.

ok ppl, bbl i promise.

Take your time to improve your health and don't worry, Sickgut.
We are here to keep the thread alive and to answer any related questions about this project.

Meanwhile I will rebuild Pussy linux with the fixes we have. I will not merge the squash files before you get better and such a decision is made official.

And one more announcement from me:

I have started to work together with JBV on a similar project based on Debian live which will not aim to run on very low RAM computers but it will aim to have the most user friendly desktop environment in favor to the new linux users. This is what I like to achieve with this project. I'm sure JBV will add more to this later.

This doesn't mean I will abandon Pussy linux project but the opposite. It will give me better ability to help to improve Pussy linux.

Cheers

I'm no health expert, but nevertheless I recommend:

(a) Non-intense and FUN physical exercise in the open air.

e.g.
(b) I found skiing was good healthy fun.
I found it promotes a happy frame of mind.

(c) The most stress-free activity I ever tried was keeping an allotment.
Enriching the soil...
Cultivation...
Growing fruit and veg.
Harvesting....
The resulting feeling of one-ness with the whole.
Feels rather spiritual.
It generates a deep sense of tranquility.
You will only understand when you stand gazing into the distant land and sky...
With mother natures' breeze rustling through your hair...
Her wind caressing your face...
And rustling the trees...
And the grasses...
In the "fields of Gold"...
Feeling that all is exactly as it should be.
That the world has existed for aeons...
And nature sustains you...
Nourishes you without demands...
And love goes goes on...
Within you...
And through you.
And beyond you. :D

sickgut

Getting the balance right between life and self is often much deeper than just stress
Delve a little into the spiritual side, and also look at what constitutes 'nourishment' as that word includes not just foody stuff that's good for you, but other forms of input....social, visual, aural, sensory, books/entertainment/PC and physical touch - [massage is good  ]...however a dietary regime change can have beneficial effects on whether flashing images cause seizure type experiences, as can removing frustrations and finding something satisfying or otherwise rewarding to the inner being

There are many big changes going on this year, in terms of individual and collective consciousness, and flexibility...the ability to respond to changes by not being stuck with old/bad habits/repeat behaviour is important for all of us

Whatever you decide...always remember you have choice and hence the power to make things different, if they cause you problems....and we only get what we need, spiritually, not what we want, physically and mentally

good luck :D

Nice words, Sylvander

Aitch :)
