Samsung ML 1640 problem (SOLVED)
wanted to use this printer today but am getting a weird error:
"/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungspl failed"
Looking into /usr/lib/cups/filter the file rastertosamsungspl is there large as life.
Got me baffled!
Update:
The above was the message on the full hdd install of 3.01.
As I also have a frugal install of 3.01, also on the HDD, I thought I would try to print there. No problem!
OK. Compare the contents of /usr/lib/cups/filter. I decided to delete all the full install files and replace with the frugal install contents.
If life was that easy.
I now get:
"/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoqpdl failed"
Again it is in the directory as large as life.
My forehead is beginning to hurt!

I decided to try a driver install to see if that would solve the problem.
Using the supplied Samsung CD I commenced the installation only to be greeted with a message saying:
"Components listed below ...
- Ghostscript - Postscript Interpreter"
I confirmed with my frugal install of 3.01 and that message does not appear.
The questions are:
1. What exactly is the Ghostscript - Postscript Interpreter?
2. How did the system lose it????
3. How do I get it back?

rcrsn51,
Thank you for the suggestion.
As far as I know I did nothing to mess the system. I like the full install so ...
Part of the error_log follows:

First, check the properties of your /tmp folder. It must have a full set of Write permissions. This can cause some printer drivers to fail.Mercedes350se wrote: "Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug" to find out more." How do I do that?
To put CUPS in debug mode, open the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. Change "LogLevel info" to "Loglevel debug". Restart CUPS with "/etc/init.d/cups restart".
Do a test print and check the error log again.
Are you sure about the model name ML-1840? I cannot find a reference to it anywhere. I am also confused over how the filter changed from rastertosamsungspl to rastertoqpdl.
What driver package are you using? There is one here.

Sorry. I must have had a senior's moment!!rcrsn51 wrote:Are you sure about the model name ML-1840?
It is actually a ML 1640. I have edited the topic title to reflect this.
Originally I was using a Splix driver supplied by a forum member - I have quickly searched through my posts but cannot find where from. It worked a treat until just recently hence my post.
I will now try the debug and come back with the error log.
Here I am back again after a few minutes. The only thing that is obvious to me is mention of missing libpng.so.3.
Off to the frugal install to see where it is ..
