PostPosted: Sat 11 Feb 2012, 21:19    Post_subject:  Samsung ML 1640 problem (SOLVED)
Sub_title: "Starting ESP Ghostscript 8.15.4..."

wanted to use this printer today but am getting a weird error:

"/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungspl failed"

Looking into /usr/lib/cups/filter the file rastertosamsungspl is there large as life.

Got me baffled!

Update:

The above was the message on the full hdd install of 3.01.

As I also have a frugal install of 3.01, also on the HDD, I thought I would try to print there. No problem!

OK. Compare the contents of /usr/lib/cups/filter. I decided to delete all the full install files and replace with the frugal install contents.

If life was that easy.

I now get:

"/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoqpdl failed"

Again it is in the directory as large as life.

My forehead is beginning to hurt!

I am beginning to think the printer error messages are the sons/daughters of the old DOS error messages - cryptic and of no real use.

I am now getting:

"Starting ESP Ghostscript 8.15.4..."

This seems more like the real problem but the question is:

What does the message mean and how to fix it?

In desperation I booted into the frugal install, renamed the ghostscript directory in the HDD install and copied the entire ghostscript directory to the HDD.

Not really surprising but this did not fix the problem.

I am now back to the "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed" message.

Anyone?

I decided to try a driver install to see if that would solve the problem.

Using the supplied Samsung CD I commenced the installation only to be greeted with a message saying:

"Components listed below ...

- Ghostscript - Postscript Interpreter"

I confirmed with my frugal install of 3.01 and that message does not appear.

The questions are:

1. What exactly is the Ghostscript - Postscript Interpreter?

2. How did the system lose it????

3. How do I get it back?

Once a full install gets messed up, it's really hard to speculate what might have gone wrong. Particularly with a Puppy as old as 3.01.

You can look at the error message files in /var/cups/log.

rcrsn51,

Thank you for the suggestion.

As far as I know I did nothing to mess the system. I like the full install so ...

Part of the error_log follows:

I [19/Mar/2012:16:49:56 -1000] Started "/usr/lib/cups/cgi-bin/printers.cgi" (pid=9288)

E [19/Mar/2012:16:50:02 -1000] PID 9291 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster) stopped with status 127!
I [19/Mar/2012:16:50:02 -1000] Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug" to find out more.
E [19/Mar/2012:16:50:02 -1000] PID 9292 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoqpdl) stopped with status 127!
I [19/Mar/2012:16:50:02 -1000] Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug" to find out more.

Two questions.

1. What is status 127?

2. "Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug" to find out more." How do I do that?

First, check the properties of your /tmp folder. It must have a full set of Write permissions. This can cause some printer drivers to fail.

To put CUPS in debug mode, open the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. Change "LogLevel info" to "Loglevel debug". Restart CUPS with "/etc/init.d/cups restart".

Do a test print and check the error log again.

Are you sure about the model name ML-1840? I cannot find a reference to it anywhere. I am also confused over how the filter changed from rastertosamsungspl to rastertoqpdl.

What driver package are you using? There is one here.

Sorry. I must have had a senior's moment!!

It is actually a ML 1640. I have edited the topic title to reflect this.

Originally I was using a Splix driver supplied by a forum member - I have quickly searched through my posts but cannot find where from. It worked a treat until just recently hence my post.

I will now try the debug and come back with the error log.

Here I am back again after a few minutes. The only thing that is obvious to me is mention of missing libpng.so.3.

Off to the frugal install to see where it is ..

rcrsn51,

You are a champion. Thank you.

When in the frugal install I mounted the hard drive install and went into /usr/lib the file libpng.so.0 was a warning triangle.

When I copied across libpng.so.3 it changed back to a normal icon.

Test page printed OK.

Saves a reinstall.

Thank you again.
