Why do you want to use Ubuntu? It's like... morphing the whole distro into anything completely diferent... hmm There's Lubuntu...

Xenogears, as far as I know, people have used Remastersys and Reconstructor to remaster Ubuntu LiveCD's. Apparently, there is another tool (new?) called Precise that does the same. I cannot tell you specifics about the procedure as I have never remastered Ubuntu (I don't have enough memory). Anyway, perhaps people at the Ubuntu forum can help you more (or you can get lucky here). One way or another, if you ever remaster your mini-Ubuntu, I would be very interested in it.
Capicoso, I think there is nothing wrong with another flavor of Ubuntu or even Lubuntu. There have been some mini-Ubuntu's before, but I have not seen any based on Ubuntu 12.04.

If you want a Puppy made from Ubuntu packages the best way to do it is using Woof, the Puppy builder. And it's already been done for you. Is there something I'm missing about what you want?

answer: lucid puppy 5.28
(not based on 12.04, but many of the packages still work)
dual panel? do you mean desktops? Puppy already has it.
If you mean window managers, there are several you can try.

Bodhi Linux is a light and fast distro based on Ubuntu 10.04. This has very responsive on the old 6 year old laptop and I am so pleased with the Enlightenment desktop, that I have put it on my main system too!
There is also Macpup which is an Enlightenment based puplet in the kennels.
In the kennels too is Pussy linux, which is a Debian based and follows the Puppy principle. Ubuntu is built on Debian, so there is a lot of compatibility with Ubuntu. Pussy Linux is something that is on my to-do list for serious consideration as I would like to use it as the basis of a custom distro for my Linux-on-a-stick. BTW I am posting right now using Puppy on a USB pendrive which is plugged into my mother's laptop.

You may or may NOT have noticed that Barry is creating a Puppy flavor from the "Precise" experience.
Hope this helps the OP and others.

Is this a joke? What are the specs of such an "old" machine?

Ubuntu DVD is 4.2 Gb....so simply remove 4 Gb of stuff and you have U-Puppy. A little big still...but that would be good start.....

manufacturing date from the back 06/04, so it is older than I thought.
AMD Mobile Sempron 3000+ / 1.8 GHz
2 gig RAM
... no joke, it's old and runs well with Bohdi

Short answer: no.
Long answer: absolutely no way whatsoever.
I've tried minimal Linux installations, with Fluxbox or Openbox or whatever, on a Pentium II Thinkpad with 192 MB of RAM. I've even tried NetBSD and FreeBSD... Makes no difference. Everything other than some form of Puppy performs like a geriatric sloth.
I'm not really sure why though... I think it may boil down to kernel compile options, or something.

I think that loading the OS mostly to the RAM means quite a lot. I dont think so that kernel compile options is the way to debug the speedy of Puppies. I havent managed to destroy my puplets speed with different kernel parameters...sometimes the kernel gives even some boost more...but does not slow down.
