Quick & Easy Information to BugFixes, Updates & more
| minesadorada wrote: | | @RSH: Will you make an upgrade pet for release 2, or will installing the new ISO keep my settings from release 1? |
I did the most of my actual work the way, to get a new iso and to get a upgrade.pet for install. Meanwhile there are that much of changes, so i had to give up the idea of having a upgrade.pet.
1. There is the New Menu
The menu is again restructured and does have some new menu entries (.directory files) Desktop, Setup and System are now in Menu Workstation, which includes also Shutdown, User-Modes, the New LazY Puppy Menu Suite and some more. Document, Calculate and Personal are now in Menu Office. Network and Internet are now only Menu Network. Though it is a little smaller!
2. But it is not only the menu. Some programs had been removed, some others were included. Meanwhile i have programmed some gtkdialog applications, suggested by some forum members - and now also included in the new iso.
Maybe i will be able to build a upgrade.pet - it would take weeks or better saying months to do so. And actually i am in the need for a break on learning bash-scripting (though i love this really) and returning to make some music and take care of my girlfriend.
It will be easy to do this for me, because the work is finished (a few little steps and improvements) and i am out of ideas or better saying: have reached almost 100% of having my dream puppy running on my computers.
I will work the whole night until tomorrow (until my eyes get dusty) and do post some information about whats new and what has changed - during the night. So if you got time, just have a look from time to time, to get informed.
Regarding "keep" your settings: i have written a program called backup-settings, which is available here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=609134#609134. Run the program, create a list with your favorite directories (settings) and save the list. Then run the program using this list and every listed directory inside the list will be saved as .tar.gz and moved to the savedir. This surely can be useful to make migration to LazY Puppy Release 2 as easy as possible (actually).
Edit:
I will upload the new iso until (i hope so) : 2012-03-13 - sorry for delay, but sometimes...

Ok minesadorada. You have been so kind to post your pascal sources in my LazY Puppy thread and i think this is worth some special treatment:
I have refined the backup-settings application to make your migration to LazY Puppy Release 2 the easiest way that has been possible for me to do. I hope this will do it...
Attached picture shows german GUI but if english keyboard is set, it will show .... bla ... bla ... as always - you do know that surely.
The new version is version 1.0
And that's new: it now can all backup (.tar.gz) files automatically install into the new LazY Puppy Release 2. Version 1.0 is builtin in Lazy Puppy Release 2 and it is not (yet) published in the forum. At first i will publish the new iso.
All you need to do is:
Run the new iso (as far as available ), open your old save file (mount it by single left click) and create a list of backup directories. Do create a new list and drag & drop the wanted directories into the opened simple text editor. Klick enter for a new line and do it again. Save the list twice, different but similar names. You will need to edit the second one and remove the /mnt+mnt ... ... .2fs parts - otherwise you would install into your old save file.
After full list is created and saved, first click on Backup (unedited list) and drink some coffee meanwhile, second select the edited (removed path-parts) list and click Install. Installing will doesn't give space for having more coffee.
Do not change the save path except you create a new list and want to save this list on another place.
I hope, you will give the new LazY Puppy Release 2 a opportunity to conquer your heart.

LazImUL 1.0 - LazY Puppy Image Upload - available in the New LazY Puppy Release 2, which will be available surely at least on 18th of March 2012.
Note: It will show English GUI if English Keyboard Layout is set.
This Application is inspired on a Script by Bart Nagel --> http://imgur.com/tools/imgurbash.sh <-- and a GUI-Script by Stu90 --> http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=562145#562145 <--.
I have written a completely new GUI. It has Option to use up to 5 different API Keys. It has Batch-Mode to upload multiple files. Batch-Mode is text file based which can be edited by the included simple text editor. It creates a log file wherein is written date, time, filename and imgur output. It creates a backup of log file at every use, so you have always the latest upload data available. You can edit and/or remove the log file.
These Images have been uploaded with LazImUL-1.0 a few minutes ago!

This is something, that will not happen all the time - maybe once in a lifetime!
There is a new president in Germany!
And there is a New LazY Puppy from Germany (though it's usable for English users as well)!
Have fun and be happy as i am!

Lazy Puppy 2 |
|
Installed Lazy 2 as Frugal install on hard disk last night.
I am very very impressed so far. The user-level menu system is fantastic!
There is some good fresh thinking in this distro that will delight some (like me)
Just FYI - installing Chrome or Iron from the repository breaks CUPS administration. I believe this is a permissions issue.
Well done, RSH

Thank you very much!
Unfortunately i have to inform about two bugs:
1. Menu Suite
- if you get a message like xxx is already running but it isn't running, then open the terminal and type free-nms (this should not happen, but it does - 1 time to me yesterday). The free-nms command will free the menu suite.
2. LazImUL - LazY Puppy Image UpLoad
- if you have checked batch mode and then leaving the gui, it will never start again.
Open file /usr/local/LazImUL/LazImUL and change the following
| Code: | fi
echo "IMGDIR=$imgdir" > $WORKDIR/imgpath
|
to
| Code: | echo "IMGDIR=$imgdir" > $WORKDIR/imgpath
fi
|
After this improve file /usr/local/LazImUL/imgpath for an existing path:
| Code: | IMGDIR=/usr/share/backgrounds
|
I hope that's all...
I will make a bugfix pet within the next days and then post it. I will also make a win installer of LazY Puppy 2 and then i will upload a new, fixed, iso - this one should take your save file without any problems.
Regarding the cups issue:
Did you try to use the new LazY528-Internet.sfs? Will the cups issue return then?
The new LazY528-Internet.sfs contains firefox and opera web browser. If you want to use chrome, you can easily build your own sfs. Copy the chrome.pet to /root and run Dir2sfs SFS-Builder in the LazY Puppy menu and/or the favorites menu. Follow the instructions inside the GUI.
Using an sfs instead of installing a .pet maybe will make you able at least to print or to browse (if not print and browse at a time).

Yes, I got that fault, and your fix works.
Re:CUPS - Yes I installed the Internet SFS but it doesn't fix it. It seems to be a problem with the SWIron/Chrome pet (in your distro list) installation that messes up permissions for CUPS access. I had the same problem in DPup Extrimo and the developer repackaged his Chrome SFS distribution and solved the problem. (discussion here)
Another fault that needs fixing (because it is VERY noticable) is going to be difficult. I can't seem to reproduce it reliably, yet it has happened twice now.
Look at the screenshot (attached) Once pixels get 'trapped' behind the screen menu-bar, nothing can make them go away (except a reboot/X-restart of course) It's a shame, because it spoils the look of your clean desktop in Lazy 2.
There are other minor faults in Lazy 2 apps I have noticed in running it for a few days. Would you like me to post a complete bug report, or should I wait awhile?
I am using Lazy 2 as my everyday OS now. I think your customisable menu system, SFS suites and desktop bar design is a great way forward for Puppy, and I hope other distro designers are watching..

The Pixels get 'trapped' behind the screen menu-bar, is not really a bug. It is more a redraw issue of wbar. If this happens again, just do right-click on the wbar. Then it will refresh itself. I was irritated also as i saw this redraw issue at first.
And, yes: if you run into bugs (minor or major) pleas inform me.
I will read the DPup Extrimo Thread tonight. Maybe i can do something like it's done there.

Yes, i like this too. That's why i did include the Advanced-Bash-Scripting-Guide.pdf and the Advanced-Bash-Scripting-Guide.pdf into LazY Puppy and related entries into the guides menu. Before i did release LazY Puppy 1, i did try to download the html versions of these pdf guides - but unfortunately they didn't download.
Thanks to your post i now do remember this and did try again to download the html versions - and this time: successful. Also it is a newer version than your "tuuxxx"-version (same as pdf - 6.4, 30. Aug. 2011)
So these will be changed in the next (fixed) iso. I think about a solution to keep the guides outside of LazY Puppy and load them via the menu entries though.
Is there a possibility to set a path to the directory from where LazY Puppy is started that fits in both cases: with and without using a save file?
Example: if i use a save file i do get the path as /mnt/home and without using a save file i do get the path as /mnt/sdd1? Is that possible?

I'm not at my home computer, but does the 'df' command
give a list of SFS files that are attached to file system.
If it does then you should look
at my quick-launch program for code to list partitions
