Missing Desktop Icons (PL 5.0.1 Live CD)

#1 Post by rhizome »

Since opting to save the .sfs file to my hard drive, the desktop and taskbar icons are missing. How do I restore these?
There are currently generic ones in place of the fancy ones originally there.

Can anybody suggest a fix for this? Not sure if it's related, but I happened to encrypt my .3fs file at the same time as saving it to the HD.

Missing desktop icons

#3 Post by localhost »

I had the exact same problem--I ran Puppy from a Live CD a couple times, no problem, very fun, then decided on the third run to save a file to my hard disk (I did light encryption). Then, next time I booted Puppy from the CD, the icons had changed! Many of the programs had no icons or generic ones. Any help?

Restore original PuppyPin file?
/root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin
then restart pinboard

Code: Select all

killall ROX-Filer && rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin
Sometimes you just need to restart pinboard.

All my icons have disappeared now in snowpuppy 015. I am not a technician. Found and tried Menu, utilities, general utilities, ROXterm, pasted

killall ROX-Filer && rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin

screen went dark for a second but nothing changed.

Anything more I can try?

Note; Pfind, all files, not excluding initrd: pinboard, "no file found".

Had the same issue and was stuck for a while. Eventually came across this thread, signed up, and while I was waiting for confirmation, fixed it! So now I'm here to provide a resolution.

In my case I had run off the CD a few times and tried to do a full install on to a HD. After failing to boot from the HD a few times, I fell back to the CD boot. It was so slow that on the last time I elected to save the session. No encryption, just the save file to the HD. Well this time boot from the HD worked, so when I saw no icons (except the generic red yield sign), and no background, I figured it was due to the boot from HD, not from the saving of the session. Reading your reports, I suspect it was the saved session at fault.

Anyway, after finding a bunch of "ROX-Filer: Couldn't recognize the image file format" entries in log files, I found a resolution here:

http://roscidus.com/desktop/node/91

Which in short, says simple to run this command in a console:

Code: Select all

# gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders > /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders
I then restarted X and boom, everything was back.

I'm not sure if anything else was affected but all seems well now!

Dejan,

Thanks! I just had a harrowing experience and your post saved me hours of labor reinstalling my system.

I attempted to use the "Underdog" option in Wary 5.3.3 and trashed my save file. When I finally got the system running again I booted into a gray background with drive icons and the jwm-tray. I was able to restore the background image with the wall paper manager, but the desk icons were gone.

I had no idea where to begin until I read your contribution. The problem was indeed PuppyPin. Somewhere in the crash and restoration process it got trashed. I "borrowed" the corresponding file from Slacko 5.3.3 that happened to be running on another machine and replaced PuppyPin. I restarted the pinboard as you suggested above - and all was restored!

Thanks a lot LightYear!!
I googled the same problem, icons disappeared on first boot after saving to a persistent file, and your code worked like magic!!!
:D
I really appreciate it when people like you take the time to post a solution after they found something out.
