Strange behavior of murga-forum-server Subject description: Several times a day it doesn't respond or takes minutes to do so |
|
Hello to the Admins.
I do feel the need to complain on a very strange behavior of murga-forum-server. Several times a day the server doesn't respond and/or takes minutes to do so. If i am just reading this may be a minor issue, but if i am posting something it is more than a major problem - because several times i did lost the text inside the forum text editor.
So i do make now almost a copy of what i want to post, before i click on preview and/or submit.
When will this be fixed?
Is there a chance to fix this?
I am just asking the second question because it's getting more ugly the last two weeks!
And, no: it is not my internet connection, because i do not have such delay on any other website i do visit while the murga-forum-not-responding-minor-issue-major-problem is alive.

The forum sometimes does take a while to respond, but I can't remember seeing that before. I don't think the forum server sent it. Perhaps your browser is generating it, or a router or something.

That's one of the standard Firefox timeout messages, Flash. I can't remember whether or not Seamonkey does something similar.
Yeah, the server has been a little slow to respond, at times, but never enough to generate a timeout message, for me. RSH, what do you get if you open a terminal and ping murga-linux.com?

Me too!
Until recently I too had been having this problem...
Not only at the Puppy forums...
But also at the PC-Guide forums at the same time.
1. THE CAUSE AND THE SOLUTION:
My ISP [Virgin] said that the IP address of their server was probably being blocked by these sites.
I was directed to go to:
Firefox->Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Network->Settings->Manual proxy configuration:"...
Then enter...
Proxy: webcache.virginmedia.com
Port: 8080
Place checkmark against: "Use this proxy server for all protocols".
The problem ceased.
2. He said that over the week following that change...
At some point the problem may return...
[Because they periodically (and automatically) change the IP address of their server]
And when it does, to click the "No proxy" radio button.
That's the setting now in use, and all is now well once more.

Holy mother of pearl, why does it have to be so complicated?

I was rather astonished that major forums would be blocking the IP address of a major ISP.
And now it seems likely that [at the very least....] yet another ISP's IP address is being blocked.

I don't think the Puppy forum was blocking it, but our host is another matter. Last I knew, our host is Godaddy. And your ISP only guessed at what was going on. If a major forum, such as the Puppy Linux forum , had really been blocking you, you should never have gotten through at all. Instead, the problem was intermittent.

I have found this often to be a DNS failure
Try setting up your network in the original network wizard using fixed IP, [note your existing IP/router addresses by typing ifconfig in console] so you can add DNS servers; OpenDNS, 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
or 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 [verizon DNS]

I do use a mobile gprs modem, German Internet Provider (Telekom). Will this work for German users?

I do get a never ending scrolling list that tells me: 64 bytes from 208.109.22.214: seq=55 ttl=41 time 242.879 ms
seq is counting and time changes on every new received line.
I currently can not tell how this data would look on having the "murga-forum-problem".

your ping times are very laggy
try typing in a console traceroute www.murga-linux.com
and see where the delays are
I'm in UK and get a maximum 143ms for the last few hops
Have you got a good aerial signal?, as weak signal will cause a 3G device to switch down from 7.2mhz to 2g at 368khz - not much better than dialup
I don't think you need to setup DNS for a 3G modem...? [I never needed to, using 'Three' on Huawei E220 on my boat - but signal strength is crucial!]
Afterthought - It may be a driver issue for the modem?
Have you checked the device make/chipset against a linux driverlist?

Well, I would contact Telekom, and let them know the problem you're having and see what they suggest, as I see your ping and traceroute times are much slower/laggy than mine, but can offer no explanation nor solution - sorry

Just for a comparison, I tried the traceroute in Southern Oregon with my Quest ISP provider and got:
# traceroute www.murga-linux.com
traceroute to www.murga-linux.com (208.109.22.214), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
1 qwestmodem.domain.actdsltmp (192.168.0.1) 0.814 ms 0.463 ms 0.413 ms

3 eugn-agw1.inet.qwest.net (67.42.193.25) 49.287 ms 49.347 ms 49.994 ms
4 eug-core-01.inet.qwest.net (205.171.150.57) 49.568 ms 49.458 ms 49.763 ms
5 phn-core-02.inet.qwest.net (67.14.19.34) 81.373 ms 81.181 ms 80.564 ms
6 phn-edge-06.inet.qwest.net (205.171.12.146) 80.610 ms 91.028 ms 81.528 ms
7 63-234-235-102.dia.static.qwest.net (63.234.235.102) 81.835 ms 81.592 ms 82.022 ms
8 ip-216-69-188-18.ip.secureserver.net (216.69.188.1 125.917 ms 90.022 ms 96.323 ms
9 ip (216.69.188.1 94.776 ms 123.822 ms 84.737 ms
10 www.murga (208.109.22.214) 84.279 ms 83.823 ms 84.198 ms
#
It seems like it did a quite a bit of switching in quest to get out to the secureserver.net. But only one jump from there to the forum.

Have you tried using a different browser, e.g. chrome/opera, in case there's some settings/IP blocking happening, as it doesn't appear to just be the oft-encountered transcontinental link delay, if murga-linux is the only site you have problems with?
