PostPosted: Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:24    Post subject:  Easiest way to install flash player?

I am running Lucid Puppy Linux 5.2.8 with Firefox (which automatically updated itself to the latest version). I want to watch videos on some of the pages here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/ but I get a message saying I must install flash player.

What is the easiest way to install flash player please?

When I click on the link on the page in Firefox to install flash player, I get offered a choice of four things to download:

"YUM for Linux (YUM)
.tar.gz for other Linux
.rpm for other Linux
APT for Ubuntu 10.4+".

Which one should I choose? What do I have to do next?

Is there any practical alternative to flash player?

I think I may have seen a click-button downloader for flash within Puppy Linux somewhere, but have not been able to find it again.

Thanks

1. Go to "Menu->Setup->Setup Puppy->Puppy Package Manager".

2. "Find:" "flashplayer" when "Repo:" = "Puppy-Lucid", and click on it to install it.
Or better still...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Download and install this PET....
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-lucid/flash_install-0.1.pet
Then run it to install the latest flashplayer.
Then...

4. Test the installed flashplayer here...

I did 1 and 2, but whereas previously I got a photo and an error message, now I get nothing. How do I uninstall it please?

There was some error message about missing files in common, and Firefox has now become very slow - perhaps the personal storage file on my HD needs to be made bigger, if that is possible.

I found menu entries for Flash in Menu/Internet, which leads to the download site - but the problem is where do I tell Firefox to download the file to, and how do I get there?

Edit: I found that clicking on the file in the bottom-right pane of the package manager uninstalled it.

I clicked on the link for the 0.9 version, and ran it rather than saving it.

I still get just a photo and a message telling me to install Flash player.

Is there something else I should do please?

Thanks

Thanks, I have now done that, but it does not work for me. I just get nothing, and my computer is now extremely slow.

i think the problem may be that flash player version 11 requires a CPU that is three times faster than my CPU - although it played OK on my defunct Windows computer which was below the required spec.

The BBC news website says that version 8 or flash player is good enough - is there any way of downloading that?

Thanks

Edit: Version 9 is available here http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html which as it runs under WinMe may run for me in the Linux version. Not sure what to do next, as a zip file is downloaded.

You have done what?
You have to be specific, what you try, so we understand. We only know what you tell us. You are our eyes.

I am using Lucid Puppy 5.2.8-004
Firefox11
The latest "Adobe Flash Player" by using "menu->internet->Install Flashplayer" to install "Flashplayer".
The BBC link in your first post shows video with no problem.

Firefox auto-update got messed up, in version 7 & 8, so this could be causing your problems.
You can get a good Firefox 11 here:

"That" refers to the previous sentence.

There now appear to be three current threads about Flash not working.

I'd be grateful for any advice about how to download and install the old flash 9 version, with the URL given above. i am already running Firefox 11.

Thanks

"drop in"

Sorry, where do I drop in something, to what?

I did download the file you linked to, but the computer just apparently downloaded it without asking me or telling me where to put it, so I've no idea where on my computer it is. Nor was there any "save to" option offered.

"lspci | grep -i vga" - do you want me to click on the Console and type that in? Or something else?

I typed in the first word and got this:

lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82810 GMCH (Graphics Memory Controller Hub) (rev 03)
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82810 (CGC) Chipset Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801AA PCI Bridge (rev 02)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801AA ISA Bridge (LPC) (rev 02)
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801AA IDE Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801AA USB Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801AA SMBus Controller (rev 02)

01:0b.0 Communication controller: Conexant Systems, Inc. HCF 56k Data/Fax/Voice/Spkp Modem (rev 0Cool

As explained on another thread, I am also finding it impossible to go down or sometimes up the directory tree - there must be some secret method which I do not know.

Thanks

from the desktop, the icon with a house on [in slacko] opens rox, or in menu/filesystem/rox
Once the window opens, in the top l/h corner is a green up-arrow, which will take you up from whichever file you've jumped to, e.g. downloads, where, by default, downloads get saved, though .pets will generally be in root

It isn't hard, and you can open multiple instances of rox to copy/move files by dragging them from one instance of rox to another....you will see a message which sets copy or move or other choices

Playing with Puppy is part of learning

If you've downloaded Flash or shinobar's getflash-0.9.pet, it will install once you click on it, and make a menu entry

If you can't find something, often it will be in /tmp, found by hitting the green up-arrow to get from ~ to / where the tmp file is visible, use the up-arrow to return to /, if you need to
to return from / to ~ click on the root icon

simple when you get used to it.... Very Happy

menu/utility/resize personal storage will give you more space for files
