Cannot open a sub-directory to save file there |
|
When using Abiword, I have wanted to save a document. I used the "save as" option, and I got a window with a list of directories including "my-documents".
I wanted to save the file in a sub-directory of "my-documents". The sub-directory is called "docsjan2012" and I had previously created it with the file manager Thunar.
But whatever I did I just could not get the "my-documents" folder to open. So I could not save the document in "docsjan2012".
How do I get "my-documents" to open to reveal its sub-directories please? I've tried everything.
(I have also noticed a similar problem with other programs - with it being impossible to navigate either up or down the directory tree).
Thanks

Boot off your Live CD using the "puppy pfix=ram" boot option.
Do some tests. Are you still having the problem?

i rebooted and typed in puppy pfix=ram
Puppy now seems to have forgotten everything I did before - I had to reinstall Firefox.
I tried again doing "save as" from Abiword. Nothing happened when I clicked once on a directory, nothing happened when I double-clicked, but when I rapidly clicked three or four times the directory would open. It always took either three or four clicks to open. i do not know if this continuous clicking would have worked previously.
I had a look at Rox Filer also. This time it had a green arrow at the top left - I do not think it was there previously. The sub-directories also opened easily.
What should I do now please?
By the way my mouse is USB, has two buttons and a central wheel, and has a light but not a ball.
Thanks.

That's what "pfix=ram" does. It gives you a temporary clean install for testing purposes.

Since Rox works correctly, the problem must be with Thunar.
It also sounds like you are having mouse problems.

I re-booted again; the computer is as it was previously.
The "save as" window of Abiword still requires at least triple-clicking before a directory will open.
Two more questions I need to ask please -
Firstly, in the Abiword "save as" box I have not yet found out how to go upwards in the directory tree.
The "save as" box has mysterious "bubbles" in it, in a line. The first bubble is a triangle or arrow, the second bubble says "root"; and after I have triple-clicked on "my-documents" then there is another bubble also that says "my-documents".
I imagined that clicking the triangle would have navigated me up the directory tree, but it does not. Instead the triangle changes into a circle within an oblong, but nothing else happens. If I click on it once or twice more then I have apparently jumped to the "root" without passing through "my-documents" again.
Please could someone explain how I travel upwards in the tree hierarchy, and what the purpose and significance of these bubbles and symbols are please?
Secondly, before rebooting I plugged a USB port with a pendrive attached into a USB socket. There is now an icon for a pen drive on the desktop, and the amount of memory for it is correct, even though I have not mounted it which I thought was required.
My question is, how do I navigate to the pendrive when I want to save a document there please? Where would I find the pendrive within the file directory? In Windows I was used to seeing a nice list of all the drives.
Thanks.

Try this. Single-click to select the item. Then press the Enter key.

In the left panel, you should see Filesystem. Use it to navigate to other places in the directory tree.

Mount the pen drive by single-clicking on its icon. In the left panel of the Save dialog, select Filesystem. Open the mnt folder and locate your pen drive. It is probably sdb1.
Then use the +Add button to add the pen drive to the list of favourite locations.

Thanks, I tried doing what you said to mount the pendrive, but got a red error message saying it could not be done. I got the same message using the default and using "mut".
The default software thought that the DVD was another floppy, but was recognised correctly using mut.
The pendrive is new and was apparently OK in Windows. I do not remember which file system it has.
It is plugged into a USB hub, which is plugged into the computer. The hub worked OK previously, and the USB printer is also plugged into the hub and works OK.
I'm getting a backlog of word processing to do.

Boot off the CD using "puppy pfix=ram".
Try to mount the flash drive.
Do you have another flash drive to test?

I restarted the computer as suggested, and this time it was not even aware that there was a pen drive plugged in.
I will fiddle with it some more tomorrow.
Abiword appears to both save and retrieve documents from the pendrive even though it is not mounted. Could that be some sort of illusion? I am unable to check the pendrive on another computer.
Thanks

It was an illusion - there was nothing on the pen drive when I plugged it in to a Windows computer.

I hope your problem is resolved. I should mention in passing that one of the quirks I discovered with linux is that folders should have the executable permission set, otherwise you cannot "cd" into them. If you have problems with accessing a folder it might be worth right clicking and checking that the executable (x) permissions are set for the folder concerned.

If the folder /mnt/sdb1 was created, but the pen drive never got properly mounted onto it, then the folder acts like any other folder in your file system. The files that you saved there will be inside Puppy, not on the pen drive.
