Windows bootable floppy from Puppy Subject description: Can I make a bootable floppy to flash my bios from Puppy |
|
I need to flash my bios using a floppy disc.
None of my laptops have a floppy and my Windows box is sata only.
The only floppy disc I have is connected to my Linux box.
Can I make a DOS bootable floppy from either Mint or Puppy that I can safely use to flash the bios?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi
Tried to find a boot floppy that I used some time ago - worked very well.
However found this - not tried yet - but sounds good.

HTH - regards Ray
edit: this is the one - download both old and new versions (outstanding)

Hi Ray,
I've been there but I dare not deviate from the given path to flash the bios in case it goes wrong.
I need to create a dos only start-up floppy with just the dedicated software from Asus and the new bios file.
With anything else I'd experiment.
I might have to do it using a CD instead but you don't get the option to save the old bios before flashing. (Bootdisk.com [Driver free disc for bios flashing])
The other method is to use a USB. I think the motherboard supports if it's present when entering the bios you can then change the boot order to include USB. Otherwise its not shown.
I've not tried it yet but I think it might be the best way if I can't get a floppy sorted out.

RoyBell,
Attached is a FreeDOS floppy image. You should be able to copy it to a
floppy and then add the other items that you need. There is plenty of room
left on it, as it only contains COMMAND.COM and KERNEL.SYS.

FreeDOS floppy image. Gunzip it, then dd it to a floppy.

Hi Crash,
Thanks for this. I've filed it away.
Meanwhile I managed to create a USB stick and I'm about to use it to flash the bios.
I've been using Windows 7 to create the USB stick and have had enough of it. The "User Account Control" is a real pain to use when trying to get the rights of the computer that only I use.
I'll be glad to get back to using Linux.
